Didn't know the fact about Jeremiah being the longest book in the Bible and hadn't heard of "jeremiad" so I was pretty much sunk. Put Deuteronomy just to have something.

I always thought Psalms was the longest book, but that didn't really fit. Plus the phrase "Hebrew word count" led me away from it. Said Lamentations since it kindasortmaybe fit the other part of the clue. As best as I can remember, I've NHO jeremiad.

At least I can say I got a DD that James missed. ;)

My bad guess too....

Though I just learned now that the book is "The Lamentations of Jeremiah"... Closer even than I thought.

talkingaway wrote: Thu Nov 14, 2019 5:29 pm Just looking at the stats (show not on yet), assuming that tomorrow's ToC game has all clues, this will be 20 shows in a row (or two weeks of taping days) where we've seen the full complement of 61 clues. Contrast that with the first 30 games, with 88 total missing clues, and only 6 "perfect shows".

What gives? Fewer Clue Crew questions? (Clue Crew has been there 5 times in the 20 clean shows in my informal count - didn't check the other games.) Snappier editing, perhaps using that process where they delete or speed up pauses after shooting? Did Alex rightfully complain to J! production, and did they pull a 30 second ad in his honor? Shorter clues? Fewer audio/visual clues?

I get that the ten ToC shows - particularly the QFs - are special, and should absolutely go to completion. It's unfair to QF players hunting for Wild Card spots if they don't.

Are there any permanent solutions? One, which I'd hate, would be to stop in the J! round near the end, and play 2-3 questions in studio, and toss the video up online. You could have some pretty big swings, which would be disconcerting when you come back to play DJ!.

Another would be to radically change the game by hiding a "free money" card or two in the J! round. No pause for applause; if you say "POTENT POTABLES for $400" and it's the free money question, $400 added to your bank, and quickly move to the next clue. It would decrease the number of clues per game, but you'd have no unused clues, and the same amount of money available. It would give a little bit of actual power to the player in control early in the game, other than knowing 2 seconds in advance what the next category is.

Whatever solution J! has found, it's working for me. Not convinced it's permanent, as half of the streak has happened during the ToC, but I hope it keeps going.
I like it too. In the QF games, it's crucial, as you mention. So they always reveal all the clues. And this proves they have the capability, should they choose to exercise it. I hope that's what we're seeing here and that it reflects a new, unstated policy.

I like the "free money" card idea, though purists will of course howl. But sticking one in FJ and two in DJ and making them more likely to occur in the top two rows could affect strategy in interesting ways. Do you DD hunt or FM hunt first? Can't do both.

I'm familiar with the term (which helped me get FJ!), but I can't identify where/how I encountered it.

Psalms has the most chapters of any book in the Bible, but many of the Psalms are really short, while the chapters in both Isaiah and Jeremiah are really long. In my copy of the Tanach, Isaiah and Jeremiah have the same number of pages, but it was maintaining the massive amount of spacing between words that happen in the scrolls. While both books have that spacing, isaiah has a lot more of it, and I'm glad that describing a jeremiad was the TOM, since it otherwise would've been a coin flip for a lot of people between those two. I think going by Hebrew word count was a good idea because different translations and adaptations could make things different (like "The Message", the textspeak version, the Twitter version, or the emoji version).

BMS for Wyeth? Not today.
I for one could not believe this omission. But then there are only, what? Three famous American painters named Wyeth to choose from?

Not much surprised to see James steamroll this game because, well, that's what he does. I would also like to see Emma make it way more competitive (I love Francois but have to say he's too far gone to come back). It will take a lot for her to come back even to the point where it's not a laugher by midway through DJ. I'll hope, though.

In this FJ I darn near precalled the clue. I thought they would go for something like "Two OT books are attributed to Jeremiah, the one that bears his name and this other one."

When this clue was revealed it was the most insta- of instagets for me in a long time.

And the old guy came through with the video TS photo of Mickey Spillane.

I would not have guessed that Jeremiah was the longest book in the Old Testament, but I am familiar with the word "jeremiad," so that was that.
I also would not have guessed J was the longest book. I would have guessed Psalms or Isaiah. But I was also familiar with the word, so that hole in my knowledge base didn't cost me.

Pre-this-FJ, I had no idea that “jeremiad” derived from the name of a Bible book, but I hit on the word immediately, then spent five seconds with “Jeremiah? Yup, gotta be it.” Did not know that book was longest by Hebrew word count either.

As with some other boardies, I’m surprised many here had not heard of it before. Poll question?

Interestingly, in the KJV translations, Psalms has 25 more words than Jeremiah. 42,679 to 42,654. (I downloaded text files of each and stripped out the verse numbers via a regular expression search. One of the few times in my experience when regex hasn't been more trouble than it was worth.) I guess that's why they were careful to specify Hebrew word count.

Wow, thanks for the vocab - never ever ever heard of jobation, but jeremiad/Jeremiah was a cinch...(after I veered away from Lamentations...)

Also, was the Vice reporter clue really top-level? May well be, but I've never heard of either her or the website.
That Vice story on Charlottesville was the most talked-about reportage coming out of that horror. It was first aired on HBO, where Vice had a show for 7 seasons, then went viral. It has 4.4 million hits on Youtube. I imagine some people only got the clue because they recognized Elle Reeve from the video...or that was the intention for putting her at the top, anyway.

One contributor to this discrepancy are that each Psalm begins "A psalm of [author]" in the KJV, where it would be "Mizmor L'[author]" in Hebrew, which saves 300 words. Another is that a lot of Psalms have a refrain in a lot of verses in the KJV of "The mercy of the Lord endureth forever", which is "Ki l'olam chasdo" in Hebrew, and that saving of four words per time it shows up adds up quickly, especially in Psalm 136, where it appears 26 times. According to overviewbible.com, Jeremiah has 33,002 words in Hebrew, while Psalms comes in third with 30,147. Genesis comes in second with 32,046 words.
