I heard that one, but I'd bet money he didn't say it on the NaCl clue.

No clue for FJ. Guessed Chicago.

Jeers to the contestants for running away from Ionic Bonds. :x

Guessed San Francisco on FJ. Never would've thought of Buffalo. :?

For FJ at first I took the "city of light" TOM to mean Los Angeles but the 1901 major event was a stronger TOM for Buffalo and I switched.

I also focused too much on "City of Light" and said L.A. because of the Doors song "L.A. Woman." I definitely would have had a better chance if that tidbit hadn't been mentioned at all.

It is true that the sabres in the Buffalo Sabres' logo look like the ordinary steel kind.

Insta get FJ. McKinley lived 8 days after he was shot. Enough time for people to ask, "other than that mr. President, how was your trip to Buffalo?" I think the reason so many people are saying San Francisco is because President Harding died there on his way back from Alaska. But he wasn't shot.

I actually had San Francisco cross my mind briefly, just like one of the contestants, but not because of Harding - I didn't even know how or where he died. But I was thinking about the famous earthquake - which I thought happened in 1907, which disqualified it. I think that's what Alex was referring to when Beverly's answer was revealed. Turns out the earthquake was 1906 - closer than I thought, but still not close enough to 1901 to be in serious contention. That earthquake had some photos or motion picture footage that was in the news within the past 5-6 years, didn't it?

After that brief excursion, I focused back on 1901, which I remembered was the year McKinley died, but still didn't know the Buffalo connection. Should have paid more attention to Ken Burns documentary on the Roosevelts when I had it on in the background - I know they covered McKinley's death because it's how Teddy became president, so the Buffalo tidbit surely was there.

I spent a few seconds working on "City of Light", getting nowhere... Then turned to 1901. Couldn't pull anything significant, but 1906 = SF Quake for this Californian, so that never entered my mind. Problem was that nothing ELSE filtered into my dome...

Alex mentioned McKinley and a semi-facepalm ensued. Mayyyyybeee if I had latched onto McKinley more quickly, I would have pulled Buffalo out... Maybe.

Praise again to whoever fixed the problem. I hope it's some kind of automated editing code to shave time and not some poor drudge having to manually do something clue by clue in microseconds.
The show is already edited pretty tight and I don't know how much more they could squeeze out this way. It sounds like they may have clipped the beginning of two of Kevin's responses last night, and they might be truncating stand-and-stare time but in total this would add just a handful of seconds.

I think it more likely that they are running the "tape" at a slightly increased speed. Each show is what - 22 minutes or so? Even a 2% increase would yield an extra 26 seconds and it would likely be imperceptible[*].

ETA: There is also time-compressed speech, although it seems less likely for this application.

ETA2: [* citation needed]. I did a quick search but could not find a threshold above which this would be perceptible to an untrained ear. I am open to corrections/education.

FG, you give us too much credit ;). If somebody knew Harding died in SF, they probably know it was ca 1923. I thought the SF earthquake was "probably" a little later than 1901 but had nuthin' else. To avoid TPH syndrome, I went with SF. This is how we think down here in the dumb room.

I figured it was McKinley's assassination and it was close enough to 1903 (my guesstimate of the date for the 1906 event). I tried to make hay with the New Jersey/New York area for the first electrical grid, but dead ended as well.

I got FJ immediately off "City of Light." When I flew through Buffalo's airport to visit Niagara Falls this past Labor Day weekend, I did a little research on Buffalo and learned that it had acquired that moniker due to being the first U.S. city with widespread electric lighting (which was powered by hydroelectric juice from the nearby Falls). Anyway, once I had Buffalo, the year 1901 (due to the Pan-American Exposition and McKinley's assassination) just cemented it for me.

Re: Robert Wadlow - growing up, I used to get the new Guinness Book of World Records every year, and I remember Wadlow always being mentioned for his record height, which I recalled last night as being 8 foot-something.

I wouldn't have gotten Brad Paisley but for the category title, MEN OF THE CLOTH.

8' 11.1", as I recall. Guy I knew in high school was a distant relative but about 5' 6".

"City of Light" sent me to LA via that Doors song, but 1901 event kept shouting McKinley so I mentally scribbled Buffalo. Not entirely sure if I'd have left it or changed back. NHO Buffalo as the City of Light, though the hydropower connection makes sense.

On the Man of the Cloth DD, the nickel pointed to Woolworth, but that at first didn't seem to quite fit a category in which the entirety of the other answers revealed to that point had been a shirt (Henley) and a fabric (Tweed). I guess "wool" made it fit, but... I knit my brow.

Here it is...an article about HanksGate:

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/jeo ... 48885.html

Random thought: it seems logical to think that, even with the taping being (I think) in late September, the contestants would be able to recognize Hanks, so the "buzzer malfunction" hypothesis may make sense - they forgot to turn it on, so the question didn't count. Also, Beverly's podium did light up, but not in time...meaning maybe the board lit up merely a fraction of a second before the "stand-and-stare" triple-buzz soudned?

I'd find it tough to sneer at any J! contestant for not knowing an answer - deer-in-headlights syndrome is real. Even bad wagers - particularly on DDs - can be easy to make. (FJ! is a little different, since I assume you have a lot of time. And maybe even a calculator? Please tell me there are calculators....although that would be a great reason for James to have strange DD wagers, to make the math harder.)

I'd have to give the thumbs-down. It definitely fits the second definition, but I don't think I've ever heard of a collection of writings by different authors being called specifically a "mish-mash" by definition.

Jim Morrison is the only person who has ever referred to Los Angeles as "City of Light." Him doing so during peak smog years was especially odd.

I also said mish-mash, but I agree in retrospect that it's an "ooh, sorry".
