I’m squarely a millennial and definitely remember our teachers calling them Scantron sheets when we had to do those achievement tests with ever-changing acronyms that took a week every couple years.

Okay, I stand corrected. I assumed they were new technology when I was a kid, and that they must have been replaced with something else by now. Looks like I had no clue what I was talking about....

I got "deep fake" because of a Jordan Peele video that he made as the voice of Obama as an example to warn of the possibility of such "deep fakes". It circulated maybe 1-2 years ago.

I'm near the Gen X/Millennial divide, but safely on the Gen X side, and I have DEFINITELY heard of Scantrons and used them all the time. Definitely used brand-name Scantrons in high school (1991-1995), and similar answer sheets well into 2002 or 2003. I definitely know not to fold, staple, spindle, or mutilate my answer sheet.

This is what I find interesting, that this is a brand name. I'm certainly familiar with this kind of answer sheet, we used them in the 1970s, but the idea that it had a provenance, a brand by which one referred to them, is new to me.

I'm Alpha Gen X (born 1965) and we had Scantron tests and used that term in a California high school 1981-1983. In Louisiana, though (1979-1981), I never heard the term. I'd taken standardized tests, of course, where you had to bubble in your answer with a number 2 pencil. But if the answer sheets were produced by Scantron, I didn't notice and no one mentioned it. It was certainly a novelty to me when I got to California and teachers passed out Scantron sheets for some class tests and we had our own scanner/scorer in the office.

I think Scantron got genericized, much like Kleenex, Jacuzzi, or Zamboni. Anything where you bubbled in answers and an optical (I presume?) reader read it was a Scantron form to me.

That meant that beth would not have had a runaway. As that incredibly easy FJ turned out, it wouldn't have mattered. But why make a wag on a $2,000 clue? Especially when missing it puts you out of the running?

There was an interesting scenario at the end of regular play. The last clue was a $2000 clue, Julie had $8,400, and Beth had $18,800.

In this scenario I would have said that Julie should ring in no matter what because it looks like if she doesn't even try to guess then she loses. So she should ring in no matter what, even if she has to guess. But in this case Julie missed it and then Beth missed it. If Julie had stayed clam and Beth didn't change her play then Julie would have been in contention for FJ if she had stayed clam. In this case if Julie makes the correct move it costs her the chance to win.

Yes, when it cost her nothing to try to pad her score. She would never ring in from the initial lock.

The game moves really fast and Beth may not have realized she had a lock. Obviously she could have been fully aware but a lot of players don't seem to track scores well during the quick action of regular play. I would guess that Beth didn't realize she had a lock - I don't think she would have rung in at all if she saw that.

I'm curious too. I was really surprised to see this one TS. I thought that was just the audio team not switching the active feed from Alex's mic to the contestant's fast enough?
