Fourth Podium Poll for 12/2/2019 (SPOILERS)

Post by opusthepenguin »

Turns out I have the time to make this after all. We had to postpone (to use the mot juste) my colonoscopy. That means I can make a fourth podium poll rather than prepare to get my own podium poled.

And what a game it was! The poll creation tab allows up to 16 questions and that's exactly how many triple stumpers we had. Of course, one wasn't convertible because the contestant's response was accepted and later reversed. But that only takes $200 off the table. Chump change compared to the $17,600 available. That won't get you a runaway, but it'll get you a decisive crush. And given contestant responses, you would have won easily by making the shutout bet against Mohammed, EVEN IF YOU MISSED FJ.

There are a couple of other places with potential fourth podium bucks. I'd have included them in the poll, but it was full up.

$800 2019 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVEL PHOTO CONTEST: Vultures can soar gracefully for hours and are classified, along with hawks and eagles, as these, from the Latin for "to seize" (But would this really put you $800 ahead? Surely the judges would have realized how ridiculous it is to NOT credit Alex for rebounding with a correct "predators" if they WERE crediting a contestant who rebounded with "raptors"? So, other things being equal--which they might not have been, given that Alex uncovered DD2 and DD3--Alex would have gone into FJ with $6400.)

$800 SPECIAL "OP"s: A musical work not as serious as "Rigoletto"; "Babes in Toyland", for example

Here's a reminder of pre-FJ scores and wagers so you can compare how you did:

Alex Damisch: 5600+1749=7349
Joanna LeRoy: 8400-2801=5599
Mohammed Ali: 9800-7001=2799
CORRECT RESPONSES
$600 MILITARY JARGON & SLANG: the equator
$1000 MILITARY JARGON & SLANG: the silk
$600 5 CLICKS: Car Talk
$800 5 CLICKS: a metronome
$600 I WON'T BE IN TODAY: Doc Holliday
$400 2019 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVEL PHOTO CONTEST: Oahu
$200 I WON'T BE IN TODAY: Greta Thunberg (Joanna initially credited for Greta Thurnberg)
$2000 WHAT A DISASTER!: fiasco
$2000 LITERARY WORKS OF THE 1820s: the Teutonic Knights
$1200 LAFAYETTE, IT IS THERE: Oaks
$2000 POP QUIZ: Krist Novoselic
$1600 POP QUIZ: Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott
$1600 WHAT A DISASTER!: fencing
$1600 THE ELECTORAL COLLAGE: precinct
$1200 WHAT A DISASTER!: The Worst-Case Scenario
$1200 LITERARY WORKS OF THE 1820s: Sir Walter Scott

$800 2019 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVEL PHOTO CONTEST: Only take credit for this if you said "raptors," not "birds of prey" or "predators". And maybe don't even take credit then, depending on how you feel about my note above.
$800 SPECIAL "OP"s: Only take credit if you said "operetta", not "light opera".

I was not at the top of my game last night but still raked in $6600 of this. That plus a get on FJ is enough to put me ahead of our lovely winner.

I clammed on the precinct clue but I was tempted to ring in with "arrondissement". Doing so would have destroyed my fourth podium chances (unless it resulted in a surprise "we'll accept that", which I doubt).

In the J! coincidence department, I had just been looking at that picture of Sir Walter Scott earlier in the evening while looking up Schubert's "Ave Maria" on Wikipedia. I think I would have gotten the clue anyway. But as it was, they popped that picture on the screen and I said, "Hey! That's Walter Scott!"

Got equator, Car Talk, metronome, Holliday, fiasco, Teutonic Knights, and precinct for $8200, which combined with a FJ! solve gets a fourth podium win. (I personally also count raptor and operetta for $800 each and a total of $9800, enough to tie for the lead going into Final.) Clammed on oak and fencing, and knew it was Thunberg but can never remember her last name.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

Good point on raptor and operetta. I'll make a note in the first post.

I'd consider operetta ( ) and raptor ( :( )available as trash since rebounds were possible before the change in ruling.

 :( :(    :( :( :( :(  :( :(

$7600 (or $8400), and a 4th podium win on getting 95 theses
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.
Latest movies (1-10): Everything Everywhere All at Once (10), Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken (6), Black Sunday /1960/ (6), Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (7)

Agree completely on operetta. See my note in my edited first post for the complicated situation on raptor. I personally won't take it as trash even though I got it. But that's not a costly decision to me since I win from the fourth podium either way (especially with the extra $800 on operetta). I understand if someone wants to take those points to push them over the top to glory. I mean, heck, we're already in a fantasy scenario, so why not?

Bunch of chicken stumpers at home for me in failing to pull the trigger on the parachute material, knights, sport and the tempo thing while on stage I'm probably not as gun shy.

For climate girl I had the name right though not with enough confidence to realize it when the wrong name was at first accepted.

I count $11,000 for me.

I have heard of Greta Thunberg, and even took the trouble to learn her name, so I was disappointed to count only $200 for her, while the guy who fynished wrytng his "Tales" around 1400 was worth a thousand. But I guess he is from before our players' time.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Equator, neg on silk (with "canvas"; clearly I confused airplanes with boxing), Car Talk, metronome, Holliday, (Thunberg,) fiasco, oaks, Novoselic, Elliott, fencing, and precinct, plus FJ right for an easy win from $12,600. (Also I had raptor and operetta, but I'll leave those alone; I'm winning $19,601 either way.)

Got raptor and operetta.

How have I gone all my life without knowing "fiasco" is just the Italian for flask, that it comes from the phrase far fiasco, which literally makes to "make a bottle", and that its figurative sense of "fail in a performance" is etymologically unexplained?

$12,600 including the two extras. This was a painful game to watch.

$10,000 even. Responded with "raptor" and "operetta," even though I've never associated personally associated vultures with raptors -- I think of them more as scavengers.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

Maybe it's related somehow to "pear-shaped" used as a synonym for "awry," which is also of unknown origin.
