The NCAA has called off its men's and women's basketball tournaments as part of a complete cancellation of all remaining spring and winter championships.
"This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities," the NCAA said in a statement Thursday.
The announcement is an abrupt end to a basketball season that had less than a month to go before champions were to be crowned.

In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.

The new dates for Tokyo 2020 have been announced. The opening ceremony will be July 23, 2021, and the closing ceremony August 8. (The original dates were July 24-August 9, 2020). The Paralympics will run August 24-September 5, 2021.
Among other events, the World Athletics Championships, originally scheduled for 2021, will move to 2022. (Other major sporting events still yet unconfirmed but likely to move are the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships.)
