Add March Madness to the list of events claimed by the coronavirus. Damnit.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... oronavirus
The NCAA has called off its men's and women's basketball tournaments as part of a complete cancellation of all remaining spring and winter championships.

"This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities," the NCAA said in a statement Thursday.

The announcement is an abrupt end to a basketball season that had less than a month to go before champions were to be crowned.

According to multiple sources, Tom Brady is expected to be the new quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2020 NFL season.

He will be leaving the New England Patriots, for whom he has played his entire 20 year career thus far, and has won 6 Super Bowls in 9 appearances, both records.

Not all sports have been cancelled:
Norwegian musher Thomas Waerner won the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race early on Wednesday

(I mean, yeah, they'll probably ask about this, but nothing more difficult than "Iditarod"...just feel like I had to throw something on the embers...)

They won't ask what I want them to ask on this, but hope springs eternal:

“We report a new crown bird from the Late Cretaceous of Belgium,” the authors declare in the new study. “The fossil is between 66.8 and 66.7 million years old—making it the oldest unambiguous crown bird fossil yet discovered—and provides important insight into the extent of Mesozoic neornithine diversification before the end-Cretaceous mass-extinction event, 66.02 million years ago.”

The researchers who analyzed the fossil, a team led by paleontologist Daniel Field from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, have dubbed it “Wonderchicken,”

It's worth a look as the J! writers will hit upon some of these at some point. Several already have mentions in this thread.

Note that this is just a statement from a single IOC member (and Dick Pound seems to always make his opinion known on contentious issues like these). Although the most recent official statements from the IOC and TOCOG (the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee) have begun to acknowledge the possibility of a postponement, both bodies have said that any definitive decision on the matter would be made about four weeks from now.

An official joint statement by the IOC and TOCOG was released this morning. Tokyo 2020 will be postponed.

https://www.olympic.org/news/joint-stat ... -committee
In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.
Whenever the Games happen, they will still be called "Tokyo 2020".

The new dates for Tokyo 2020 have been announced. The opening ceremony will be July 23, 2021, and the closing ceremony August 8. (The original dates were July 24-August 9, 2020). The Paralympics will run August 24-September 5, 2021.

Among other events, the World Athletics Championships, originally scheduled for 2021, will move to 2022. (Other major sporting events still yet unconfirmed but likely to move are the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships.)
