The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS, the organization in charge of the Oscars) has announced that for this year, films that debut on streaming platforms will be Oscar-eligible. Normally, films have to debut theatrically and show in Los Angeles for at least one week to be eligible.

Also, the two awards Best Sound Editing (for artificially-created sound effects) and Best Sound Mixing (for the capture and mixing of naturally-occurring sound) will be combined going forward into a single award called "Best Sound". (The Academy notes that the total number of statuettes will remain the same, as each of the old categories gave out 3 Oscars and the new one will give out 6, to emphasize the team effort.) This change is not just for next year, but is intended to be permanent. (I would wager that most people didn't understand the difference between the two categories anyway.)

The 2020 Pulitzer Prizes were announced today.

The award for fiction went to Colson Whitehead's The Nickel Boys, based on an actual reform school in Florida that abused their charges. Whitehead's previous novel, 2016's The Underground Railroad, also won the Pulitzer. Whitehead becomes only the fourth writer to win the fiction prize twice, joining Booth Tarkington (The Magnificent Ambersons and Alice Adams), William Faulkner (A Fable and The Reivers), and John Updike (Rabbit is Rich and Rabbit at Rest).

Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) has introduced the TRAP Act (Time to Repeal an Archaic Policy Act of 2020), intended to repeal the Logan Act of 1789. Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, you've gotta marvel at how they come up with those acronyms.

Hayley Williams of Paramore has released her first solo album, Petals for Armor, which kind of sounds like "Paramore" if you squint your eyes a bit.

Comedian Jerry Stiller has died at the age of 92. One half of the comedy team of Stiller and Meara with his wife, Anne, he was the father of actor Ben Stiller, and is perhaps most known to modern audiences as George Costanza's father Frank on Seinfeld and as Carrie Heffernan's father Arthur on The King of Queens. Stiller and Meara were married for 62 years, until her death in 2015.

Actor Fred Willard died today at age 86. He first came to national prominence as the sidekick on the scripted comedy talk show Fernwood 2 Night in the late 70s, alongside Martin Mull. He is known by many for his roles in Christopher Guest's "mockumentary" films, such as A Mighty Wind, Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, and For Your Consideration. Notably, he is the only person to appear in live-action footage in a Pixar film (he is shown as the CEO of the Buy N' Large company in a recording in the film WALL-E). Most recently, he appeared as Phil Dunphy's father Frank on the sitcom Modern Family.

Ken Osmond, best known for his role as the sycophantic troublemaker Eddie Haskell on the TV comedy Leave It to Beaver, has died at the age of 76. Cause of death is as yet unknown, although he did suffer from respiratory issues.

Osmond joined the LAPD in 1970 and grew a mustache to be less recognizable. In 1980, he was shot in a chase with a suspected car thief, though he was saved by his bulletproof vest. It's been reported that he was protected from four of the bullets by his vest, with the fifth bullet ricocheting off of his belt buckle. Osmond was put on disability and retired from the force in 1988.

In 2014, he published his autobiography, Eddie: The Life and Times of America's Preeminent Bad Boy, with a foreword by the Beaver himself, Jerry Mathers.

Oh, and my wife once snowmobiled with Osmond in Colorado. That's sure to come up in a J! clue.

Two hall-of-fame basketball coaches died this week.

Jerry Sloan died May 22 at age 78. Sloan was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets in 1965 and played for them for one season before being selected by the newly-formed Chicago Bulls in the 1966 expansion draft, where Sloan would play the remainder of his career (until 1976) being named an all-star twice. Sloan has played the third-most minutes all-time for the Bulls, behind Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Sloan started his coaching career in Chicago (as assistant 1978-9 and as head coach from 1979-82), but is probably better known today as the long-time coach of the Utah Jazz, serving as head coach from 1988 to 2011 (and assistant from 85-88).

Eddie Sutton died May 23 at age 84. He started his career at Creighton, and coached the University of Arkansas from 1974-85 (upsetting Michael Jordan's #1 North Carolina team in 1984) before moving on to Kentucky. His tenure at UK (1985-89) was cut short when a package containing $1,000 in cash was discovered having been sent from an assistant coach to a recruit. Sutton was replaced at UK by Rick Pitino, and he returned to his alma mater of Oklahoma State, where he would coach from 1990-2006. After retiring, he was coaxed back by the University of San Francisco, where he coached for one season before re-retiring. Sutton is one of the few college coaches to have notched 800 wins.

Iran will soon replace its basic unit of currency. The toman will replace the rial as the national currency of Iran.

The Iranian Parliament has authorized the change, although it must be ratified by the Guardian Council, a body of conservative clerics that supervises the parliament. Iran's Central Bank will then have two years to remove rials from circulation and issue tomans instead. Each toman will be worth 10,000 rials under the new system.

Over the past fifty years, the rial has been devalued many times. But since 2018, when the Trump administration repudiated the nuclear agreement and reimposed sanctions on Iran, the value of Iran’s currency has fallen by roughly 60 percent, creating terrible inflation. Iranian shoppers must now carry loads of rials with them in order to make basic purchases. As of May 4, the rial’s exchange rate was 156,000 to the dollar.
