Re: Thursday, March 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
TheFJguy gave Paul "Shudder Island" and TJF has "Shutter Island".
Here it is for others who may want a second look at it.
Strange stumper of the day (And Alex seemed to agree) was the players not able to convert: This beer holder is German for "stone"
The FJ! clue had me working the laboratory angle instead of the isle title place angle. Not feeling Frankenstein, though it was in consideration, I wrote Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde as nothing better occurred to me. My instincts told me I was wrong as I had a recollection that that Stevenson work was not a novel.
With 0/3 on reading the work or seeing either movie version the clue was going to be a miss for me without some kind of hint for the author.
Paul should have had a runaway but his DD3 wager and push by his opponents towards the end of the DJ! round kept the challengers in play.

I've boned up on literature enough so that it isn't a massive handicap anymore, but this one was still a NHO for me.... went with Treasure Island to get to something with a title island, even though it made no sense for there to be a lab called the House of Pain.

Fair counterpoint. I can now see a "t" in there, albeit an unnatural one.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 12:16 pmYou can see how he makes a "d" in "Island". I vote "Shutter", the first "t" being one of those where you don't take your pen off the paper.

Yeah, the fact that there is a theatrical version makes it exactly 1x as likely that I would have ever heard of it....

Thank you for the Shudder/Shutter input. I went with Shutter for the archive.

Maybe 3x then since there was also a 1977 version with Burt Lancaster and Michael York and a 1932 version with Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi. (There have also been various Filipino and BBC adaptations.)
I remember seeing the 1996 version in theaters when it came out. Ho-hum movie.

Island of Dr. Moreau definitely crossed my mind, but didn't think it was British, unfortunately I know nothing about the book/movie at all. Like Zahkia, I went with Frankenstein.
Edit: Oh crap, the clue said "the title setting" of this novel. Yeah, I should have gone with it then.

No guess. Even taking "title setting" into consideration, couldn't think of anything good. 2/4.

+1 The Island of Dr. Moreau
Had to reread the clue, but title setting + Isle + laboratory + pain got me there

Coryat $41,600 (46R, 1W)
DD 3/3
FJ
Except for the NHO on FJ, a solid game for me. Paul looks like he knows his stuff but is maybe decent but not dominant on the buzzer. I bet he wins a few more games...

Dang it. I did a mental coinflip between "The Island of Dr Moreau" and "Shutter Island" and it came up wrong. (Oh, and surely I was not the only one to precall "Lord of the Flies" )

Re: Thursday, March 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
So the law review editor has a DD in a wheelhouse category, yet only wagers $1200 of $1600 before the first break? Ugh.
And then of course after nailing the first two clues before finding a 3rd row DD, Zahkia wagers a whopping $1200 of $5400.
Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia was an easy mistake to make.
Before FJ Alex emphatically stated that all three contestants were still in it. Even after that Zahkia just rolls over, gives up, and doesn't even attempt to make a wager that would win the game? Seriously? And then she acted so proud of herself.
Furthermore, Wes was so locked in on the leader's score that he totally forgot to cover 3rd place.
How in the world do people not have a clue how to win at Jeopardy? It's not rocket science, mostly just basic math and common sense. Yet over and over and over and over and over and over and over we see this from contestants. If you get the call that many would do anything for, at least have a clue how to play the game! Please. AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Ran Continental and Neat Animal Stuff.
Rare for me to miss twice in a word category, but I did twice with clamp for clasp, clinch for clutch.
Isle? Uh... Island... island... Island of Dr. Moreau?! I'll take it.
Lach Trash: Junie B. Jones, stein

Coryat: 50,800
55 R/1 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Junie B. Jones, stein, Eton (DD), UC Berkeley
I don't know The Island of Dr. Moreau very well, but I know a) it involves a cruel doctor and b) the title setting is an island. That was enough today.
Shout-out to my girl Zahkia for training her tail off and acquitting herself very well on stage (and looking phenomenal doing so). Her FJ! wager was bad, though, as she gave up on her only chance to win the game.
This was my best regular-play game ever, and my first perfect DJ! round. Only Cows That Type, The Bad Seed, Rihanna (with a neg of Awkwafina), and Camila Cabello kept me from a perfect game.
