FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
BOOK WORDS

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
A 1964 essay coined this 2-word term for "artistically serious" comic books & endorsed it over "illustories" & "picto-fiction"

Paul Trifiletti: 11200-11100=100
Jessica Babbitt: 11700+11698=23398 (New champ)
Laurie Amster-Burton: 7000+200=7200

Correct response:
Spoiler
graphic novels (Paul – pop art)

Daily Doubles
Paul: 600+600
Laurie: 3600+3000
Jessica: 13400-2500

Coryats
Paul: 11400
Jessica: 14200
Laurie: 5200

Combined: 30,800

Scores at the end of the Jeopardy! Round
Paul: 5600
Jessica: 600
Laurie: 4000

No escape for Paul this time. At the discovery of DD3 Jessica led 13400 to 7000 for Laurie and 6400 for Paul. Jessica missed it and the runaway chance was gone.

With a category to go Paul took the lead 11200 to 10900 getting the $400 clue. Jessica got the $800 clue (perhaps Paul should have dropped to the "tougher" $2000 clue?) to regain the lead and the $1200 clue went TS as the round ended with $1600 & $2000 clues left.

Paul was outplayed as his five-game's worth of experience did not help him enough on buzzer timing or game management. There is no reason for Paul's DD1 wager to be 600+600 instead of the house limit.

The FJ! clue was blessedly something I could figure out as the category had me fearing an 0/3 start to the week.

Bad FJ wager by Paul, but it didn't matter. I remember that comic book term first being widely used in the late 70's to describe Will Eisner's A Contract With God, didn't realize it dated back to 1964.

My prediction for the ones LSV does not get:
Spoiler

Garden of Allah
Lawrence O'Donnell
Birchbox
Walk Hard
Since four is a lot, I must be wrong on one of them.

Paul's small wagers are not gonna be helpful come TOC. Hope he reconsiders his strategy in this regard by the time it comes!

Judges: Both "graphic novel" AND "graphic novels" okay? I'd think so.

Without question both are okay.

From The Jeopardy! Fan:

In his 1964 essay “The Future of Comics”, originally published in the Capa-Alpha comics zine, Richard Kyle found the terms “comic book” and “comic book strip” to be inadequate to describe the burgeoning medium that became the graphic novel, illustrated stories aimed at an adult audience, and he didn’t like Charles Biro’s “illustories” or EC Comics’ “picto-fiction”. So, he went to his dictionary and settled on “graphic novel” instead. Will Eisner’s 1978 graphic novel A Contract with God popularized the term, and Marvel Comics began using the term in the 1980s.

*************
Jessica & Laurie had "graphic novels" so either works.

Archive play-through since I won't get to watch tonight:

Coryat $35,200 (42R, 2W)
DD 3/3
FJ

Chalk it up to learnin'... I learned Berners-Lee from a DD in a Sam Kavanaugh episode that re-aired recently, and You Can't Go Home Again = Wolfe from a flashcard just this week.

Took me most of the 30 seconds to come up with the FJ: narrowly avoided my fifth miss in a row.

Pop art for me, although I knew it was wrong.

Laurie’s husband was on Jeopardy about a year ago, during the Holzhauer reign. Surprised it didn’t come up in the interview.

Instaget FJ.

Kingdome = Seattle was utterly unfamiliar to me. I went 0/5 in that category, but I could have gotten "Atlantic City" and "pagoda" with a hair more time.

I had "cut" on Punny for $400 but couldn't make the leap to "cut it".

Jamaica = Usain Bolt was also new to me.

Strangely, $2,000 was my only get in People. I know I've forgotten Ginsberg before, but a female head of Facebook was new to me.

I always get iguanas and chameleons mixed up and picked wrong today too. Ended up -1/5 in Island Nations.

Ran Should Be in the Forest, however.

Two-word term for a more upscale comic book? Has to be "graphic novel". Instaget.

Lach Trash: Tim Berners-Lee, stick bug

Every once in a while, something happens that makes me feel young. Today I learned that graphic novels have been around longer than I have.

Always happy to see folks with Bay State ties do well.. congrats to Paul and I look forward to seeing him again in ToC play. His tournament fate will undoubtedly hinge on what improvements he can make in regards to the buzzer and general strategy.

Took about five seconds to get final. Congrats to Jessica for the win!

Not a good day for me. Basically clammed up during the entire "Last Novels" category. Negged with "Walking Stick Insect" over stickbug, Triton instead of saying Neptune for some reason. Only got 400/2000 in Foe Pas.

Did get FJ though and the Methodist DJ. I probably jump the gun and say "Evanston" instead of "Chicago" on the 1st DD, and had 1960 instead of 1970 as my guess for the EPA.
