How amusing that one of my misses is MY OWN LAST NAME.

I didn't even have the foggiest of a WAG on the other four, as usual.

Should have gotten China, didn't know the phrase was used about Hong Kong, but should have deduced it (or noticed the significance of the year!)...
Haven't heard the Dexter story, even just now I wondered for a second if this was a reference to the Michael C. Hall series...

Wow, MarkBarrett. You gave us both the bird and the Finger (Lakes) in the same poll. Audacious. ;)

----:(

I found Monday's confusing, with "it" suggesting one country and "reunification" suggesting two, but between "two systems" and "1997" the right answer finally limped to mind.

I read the Allende book recently. Even so, I'd probably have committed only to "I. Allende", as Isabel vs. Isabella is a potential trap I'm always wary of.

Pretty sure I'd have laid off the bird, but certainly I wouldn't have got peacock.
I'm smart and I want respect.

I should have gotten China, said Bosnia-Herz... as the only hyphenated name I could come up with (if it is hyphenated or even exists ;)). No clue about the Philippines and guessed Condi for the woman author.

I remember reading about the backlash over the disgusting abuse of "comfort" animals but forgot the creature. I will not miss a clue including my last name but I just learned about pangolins from association with that fake pandemic we were told not to worry about.

Is this the record for lowest percentage rate of any top-row clue in regular competition?
