Re: Friday, May 3, 2002 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Chuck had a long stretch between wins as his ToC F2 was in 1986 and he did not win his Super J! match. Going all in made sense as sitting pat was risky and in trying to cover Eric he was going to need a hit.
With 16,000, if you’re betting 4,000, you might as well bet it all in special play as 12,000 is a very shaky number for a wildcard. Chuck was already guaranteed $10,000 for showing up, so he was in a good spot to live a little. Betting big also made sense when taking Leslie’s score into account as she was in a place where a low bet could be anticipated, allowing Chuck the opportunity to take the automatic spot.
When Leslie won her original five games she was 2/5 on FJ! clues only by getting her last 2 right. In the ToC she went R-W. In the 10th Anniversary Tournament she went 0/3.
All of that history was probably on her mind in betting $300 though there was no reason to bet big as hit or miss she was looking good to make the semis. Eric could not pass her unless Leslie swung big [*Cough* Frank] and missed in trying to cover Chuck.
Eric made the most of his 12R which was the lowest clue count he had as his previous 10 appearances all had a higher number.
With all three players finishing at 20K or above this game is looking good to produce three semifinalists.
My scoresheet shows I missed the FJ! clue and that really puzzles me since I had seen the right movie more than once by 2002. It’s not a name that would have been unfamiliar to me then as it’s been a long-time trivia nugget that pops up across various trivia things. I can only guess that I was not able to dig up the name and had an awful blank as clearly I would have known where the clue was going off the year.

Re: Friday, May 3, 2002 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I'm pretty sure I got the FJ in 2002, maybe even the last time it was on the show in 2017, but I just couldn't dredge it up tonight. Been a while since I thought about that story...
I heard Stephen Lang, who was in Death of a Salesman with Dustin Hoffman, talk about it in an interview just yesterday, and he said it was in the 80s...Yet I still guessed Hoffman along with Eric. Can't believe Dennehy's Willy Loman was that long ago...

Just the category alone was gravy for me but this is probably the easiest tournament FJ I'll ever see, as I've been a student of all things Titanic for 45 years.

If it's true that the wreck discovered in 1999 was not the Carpathia, but the Isis, and the Carpathia was actually found in 2000, shouldn't this 2002 question have reflected that?

Re: Friday, May 3, 2002 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
It's like they mangled the two discoveries together.
Sept 1999, it's announced that the wreck of the Carpathia was found 185 west of Land's End, England. It is later determined that was actually the Isis.
Spring 2000, Clive Cussler announces that his team has discovered the actual Carpathia 120 miles west of Fastnet Rock, Ireland (not England).
So, it should been either:
In 1999 the wreck of this ship, known for its historic 1912 rescue effort, was thought to have been discovered 185 miles off England
-or-
In 2000 the wreck of this ship, known for its historic 1912 rescue effort, was discovered 120 miles off Ireland

Re: Friday, May 3, 2002 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
This game demonstrated the Forrest Bounce much better than the game they showed a few weeks ago. I am glad that my recollection of what he would do wasn’t too far off. He wasn’t an Arthur Chu style bouncer. He instead would go up and down a few categories at a time.
Chuck played this one right IMHO. I guess he could have figured that Leslie wouldn’t go high and left something behind just in case.
I do remember watching this back in the day and wondering where some players were - Dan Melia seemed like an obvious player for this tournament, for example. Bob Harris had the bigger personality but Dan dominated that tournament.
That said, hard to complain about the level of play....

Missed a bunch of clues in Classic TV, Before & After, and Tonys as I am only 22 years old.

I don't think the recent repeat snipped any of this, but just in case.... Contestant interviews from this game:

Started with Californian (which didn’t help) but changed at the last second to get it right.
Great game to watch.
