Fourth Podium Poll for 9/16/2020

13 triple stumpers left me with 3 extra slots. (Polls max out at 16 questions.) I decided the three DDs--all missed!--would round it out. Remember, those don't count toward your fourth podium score.

If there'd been space for another question, I'd have included FJ. You'll just have to self-report in the comments on whether you got it and whether that contributed to your fourth podium win.

If space for another question after that, I'd have put a box for "I got all three missed DDs". Again, self-report in the comments if you did or didn't.

$6800 (+DD2) when taking into account my neg on the country singer $2000. Correct on the FJ! clue. Based on David's wager I would have to think he covers me, so 4th podium win. $2000 in chicken stumpers not going for the river or myriad number.

$6400 trash. Just shy of 2/3 Richard's score and I missed FJ. Assuming he makes the standard shutout bet, I'm hosed. Just another $200 would have put me in prime position to win from second place. Total coulda woulda shoulda game. Got caught napping on the Portland, ME clue. Should've been an easy $800. Blanked on Winslow Homer for another $800 down the drain. Thought of Daniel Boone for FJ but 1820 seemed too early for his death. So I kept thinking rather than writing down Boone while continuing to think. Change just one of those stupid moves and I'm a winner.

Congratulations! Assuming you clammed, your sad faces should be neutral faces (like this :| ). Otherwise, you have to subtract $10,600 for all your wrong responses and you end up with $-4400 in trash.

Just short of David at $9000 because I clammed on guessing "witches" for the Deborah Harkness novels. Would have been a pure guess, and not worth risking $1000 to me.

So long as "wind talkers" is acceptable for DD3, that's 3/3 on those.

Correct FJ and the win :D

I joined David in negging with Death in the Afternoon; because the "fourth podium" concept is a hypothetical where you're on stage and the three players always beat you on the buzzer, David negs first and I clam (I probably could have rebounded with the correct response, but I'll leave that alone because I failed to do so while watching). Everything else I didn't get (Witches, Portland, Rhett, Ballerini, Window Rock) was a clam. (I guessed Witches but didn't pull the trigger; I got as far as "Port" on the Maine clue but was just trying to think of east coast cities, and Portsmouth, which I was pretty sure wasn't Maine, was the only one I came up with, but Portland was totally gettable.) That adds up to $9,200, $7,200 if I duplicate David's neg; either way, against his $9,800, I win in FJ when he misses. (I got FJ right, but my score means I didn't need to.)

I was also 3/3 on DDs. Assuming I politely move down the board after every get (besides bottom-row clues), I get the first DD after getting Charles Martel, and add $1,000 to my score. I can't decide whether David would have bet differently on the last DD if I were there with $7,400 to his $12,800, but if he still bet $3,000, my extra thousand would make it possible to take the lead with my final two correct responses.

$6200 from TSs, correct on DD2 and DD3. Would have probably still lost when I matched David's answer of Davy Crockett (though I spell it without the "E").

My ability to get 50-50 guesses wrong is unparalleled. Newport or Portland? Davy or Daniel? Wrong and wrong.

And yes, I even started singing "Born on a mountaintop in Tennessee" before making my selection. But how can you be the "first" to settle an area if your parents already live there? And they're right next to each other - perfect for a short migration to a new home.

I'm sure I could give you a run for your money there. Crazy Horse or Sitting Bull? Wrong every time. Davy Crockett or Daniel Boone? Literally flipping an actual coin is my best bet.

What I've done is everytime I run into a coinflip situation, I go to the Archive and figure out how to tell the difference, then I make flashcards:

Hunkpapa/Buffalo Bill/anything that happened in the 1880s = Sitting Bull
Oglala/died 1877/massive mountain monument = Crazy Horse

Kentucky/18th century/Wilderness Road = Daniel Boone
Tennessee/Alamo = Davy Crockett

With persistence and enough of those, I've gotten to where coinflips are rare. But man, I hear ya. Loud and clear.
