Re: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
For the V.A.T. clue I heard "add" and the CC agreed. Katrina must have said, "added" or otherwise it's a neg? Or "add" is okay as well?
"Genre" counter? Add one.
The FJ! category had me try five precalls: Napoleon, Charlemagne, Nightingale, Bolivar and El Cid. For whatever reason El Cid made me think of Suleiman. My mind then tried to jump to the Arab guy associated with the Crusades and I had a blank. The rest of the break had me pessimistically dreading how awful it would be if my blank was the one.
The FJ! clue had me momentarily thinking Alex was doing a Russian reading and if I had to do a Lenin/Trotsky/Stalin sort. I got on track with 1912 and domestic to lock in the correct response and put my pen down. During the rest of think time I convinced myself someone was going to have the name Katrina ended up having.
Whatever FJ! curse there is this week did not affect Mason as he got the players up to 1/9 to lose the goose egg for the round on his way to a solid title defense.
After the game and when working on theFJguy summary the Crusades name came to me that eluded me earlier: Saladin!

My thought process on FJ! was "McKinley! Wait, the year's off. Teddy Roosevelt!"

Katrina just waved goodbye with that FJ wager. She was definitely not walking on sunshine.

Took a few seconds, but I came up with TR. I think that was where he got the Bull Moose tag.

Precisely. "It takes more than that to kill a bull moose," he told his listeners, before launching into a 50-page speech with two bullet holes through it. Kind of an instaget if you know the story.

Coryat $38,400 (46R, 0W)
DD 3/3
FJ
Brain not working right this evening, so I guess I'm happy with the results considering. Getting a TV category in DJ is always no bueno for me. I even have a flashcard for Watchmen -> Regina King but couldn't come up with it in time.
Poll request on Bennet Omalu... I work in neuroscience research and NHO him.
Went with Taft on FJ. I figured he was hefty enough to absorb a bullet....

I wish the Jeopardy gods had switched her response with Mason’s so the folly of her wager would have been obvious. Kamal’s small DD wager when Alex told him he was way behind wasn’t much better.
Instaget for me.

Poll request seen.
#8248, aired 2020-09-30 LET'S GET MEDICAL $2000: A co-founder of the brain injury research institute, he was a movie subject for identifying CTE in football players
#7798, aired 2018-07-04 PUB MED $1600: In 2005 Dr. Bennet Omalu co-wrote a report on CTE, this type of encephalopathy in an NFL player
#7459, aired 2017-02-02 M.D.s $600: Dr. Bennet Omalu discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy in football players, as depicted in this 2015 film
First time a clue has asked for him. I knew it was the Nigerian-American doctor, but needed Jimmy Kimmel to give me choices to recall the name.

Re: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Ugh, I should have gone with the first name that came to mind. "Oh, Roosevelt. No, too easy. The guy before him got shot. Year seems off. Meh, McKinley." Chronology is the key to many a J! clue, and I was off on that by a decade or so. For Katrina and me to be correct, we'd have to have an undead McKinley. For Kamal to be right, it would have to be a 13 year-old Hemingway. Both reasonable guesses IMO, if the year hadn't been there.
I'll admit it: I'd only heard of the NFL CTE doc because of the Will Smith movie, and my best guess response would have been "Will Smith" because I knew they were referring to that exact neurosurgeon. The name of the doctor didn't stick, and IMO was an expected bottom row TS clue. It's almost certainly tough enough to be a ToC clue, although we might not have one of those for a few more months.
Another half-known clue for me was Georgia O'Keeffe. Anyone want to guess the six letter word I yelled out at the screen when her clue popped up that I won't type here? I couldn't come up with the name in time.
In the "focusing on the wrong part of the clue" file, I'll put Edward "Butch" O'Hare. I ignored the last name and became mesmerized by the nickname...I couldn't come up with anything, though the response was very easy.
Glad the FJ! curse got broken.

Re: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Very much an off day with only a $10,200 Coryat.
The big mountain in Japan is Fuji, not Kilimanjaro. That trips me up literally every single time and I can't for the life of me find a way to untrack that.
Also 0/5 in British Government and Playing the Part on TV.
Too slow on "Tejano" and "Frank" to run Musical Styles and Household Names.
Can't say I've heard the word "litigious" before but recognized the rest even if I missed $2,000. Odd when the top box is my only NHOI.
Mondrian was probably my best get of the night.
Absolute static on FJ! I just couldn't set the wheels in motion after my dreadful game. I think on a better day I might have pulled this, but it just wasn't coming.
Lach Trash: W. C. Handy (thank you, "Walking in Memphis")
