Cleveland met her when she was a baby and was good friends with her father. After her father died when she was young, Cleveland served as a surrogate father.mas3cf wrote: ↑Mon Oct 19, 2020 9:41 pmAh, got it. So the key fact was "absurdly young First Lady". Adding that one to the knowledge base, because it does seem to get a lot of play from the writers.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Oct 19, 2020 8:49 pmRequest seen. I think being spotted "the Red Death" and told the name of the event is in the title should suffice for most to get that, even if nobody uses "masque" in that sense nowadays.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Oct 19, 2020 7:29 pm I thought "masquerade" was MASSIVE negbait in Poe "M" $200.
I also made the singular "murder" mistake. I'm going to go ahead and blame the clue asking for the two M words rather than a full title, although I may well have ended up singularizing the title too. Nancy's neg saves me a fourth-podium win, as that was my only LT neg, and my LT gets totaled $9,400. (Of course, getting visual cortex probably means the Cro-Magnon DD would have been mine to choke on; I said Neanderthal, which has a couple things wrong with it, being named for a cave in Germany, not France, and not being Homo sapiens. I did start realizing it was probably Cro-Magnon just before Alex said it.)

Has something like "First Lady Truman" always been acceptable? Yes, I know there's only one, but somehow I had the idea that a first name or moniker (such as Lady Bird) has always been required for first ladies.

They didn’t mention her husband by name so just Truman should be acceptable.Linear Gnome wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 12:01 am Has something like "First Lady Truman" always been acceptable? Nice to see a ZOOM reference, but where's the 1999-2005 reboot?

Re: Monday, October 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I found ZOOM for $800 to be a particularly egregious example of writer carelessness (or poor proofreading) that has been mentioned several times this season.
A zoom lens is not AKA a "variable focus" lens; it's a "variable focal length" lens. Most lenses these days are variable focus lenses whether they zoom or not. Zoom lenses change focal lengths so you don't have to carry multiple lenses to have a range from wide angle to telephoto. The terms are not interchangeable.
Good clue, but an incorrect response was found to be acceptable. Sloppy. They'll get feedback about this one.

I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

From the "Mouth moved before brain could kick in and filter" file...
In "First Ladies"...I boomed out to the room "Mamie Eisenhower" for the clue about Bess Truman...when I knew better. Just wasn't thinking.

Re: Monday, October 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I think most of us who got it could get it on the name "Folsom". Knowing the First Ladies is a pretty manageable list. Probably a good idea for anyone who goes on Jeopardy! to know the full names of all the presidents and the full and née-names of all the first First Ladies. "Frances Folsom" is nicely easy because it is so alliterative.
I've got one more mnemonic for you. A famous Johnny Cash song was the "Folsom Prison Blues", and Frances Folsom was married in the Blue Room of the White House.

A First Lady maiden name category would be fun. Put Martha Washington at the bottom and see if someone gets it right or falls for the negbait ofRobert K S wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 8:28 amI think most of us who got it could get it on the name "Folsom". This is going to be a bit "get off my lawn!," but haven't you noticed lately that young people are again often blaring music in public rather than using headphones? Trust me, it's a thing. Even when I'm out hiking I'll usually pass someone playing music on a Bluetooth speaker.
Totally agree. I said "variable focus length" for this one.AFRET CMS wrote:A zoom lens is not AKA a "variable focus" lens; it's a "variable focal length" lens. Just make sure that such a category does not consist of transgender people - otherwise you'd probably get a ton of negative comments from the trans community on how they're "deadnaming" them.Bamaman wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 9:57 amNot if I were on the show.Robert K S wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 9:13 amTo ask for birth names would result in a full category of Triple Stumpers
As a side-note, for reasons like this I prefer a term like "unmarried name" if one is looking for a gender-neutral synonym for "maiden name" as it keeps other kinds of name changes, some of which people may prefer to keep private, out of the equation. Similarly as an antonym for "stage/pen/other professional name" I coined the term "IRL name" myself. IMO the term "birth name" should be used only when you truly want to be exclusive of all kinds of name changes done later (including adoption, naturalization, etc.) - and as I said since some of those scenarios may be considered "sensitive" should be handled with caution.

Re: Monday, October 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Thanks, but that suggestion doesn't really work for me because I don't refrain from use of "maiden name" (solely) as a way of trying to be gender-neutral. The reason I don't use "maiden name" is because when I was growing up my mother was always (silently) offended when people asked for her "maiden name" which didn't exist as such because she didn't change her name when she got married. To say my mother had an "unmarried name" would be just as problematic.GoodStrategy wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 10:52 am As a side-note, for reasons like this I prefer a term like "unmarried name"

Did this really need to be said? Of course they wouldn't do that and I feel like it's a little offensive to even point it out.GoodStrategy wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 10:52 amJust make sure that such a category does not consist of transgender people - otherwise you'd probably get a ton of negative comments from the trans community on how they're "deadnaming" them.Bamaman wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 9:57 amNot if I were on the show.Robert K S wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 9:13 amTo ask for birth names would result in a full category of Triple Stumpers

Don’t believe we have had any transgender First Ladies so that wouldn’t be a problem.
