Re: Friday, October 23, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Brian can laugh about his butt-dial error since it did not cost him anything. I would have matched him (as that's the term I use) except I caught the "garment" requirement in the clue in time.
MOVIE SUM-UP was a fun run for me and I did enjoy the player mistakes for the "chess" clue. Especially funny was Alex's "Oh, no" for Jamelle's "Bogus" guess, as the host understood how far apart on the spectrum the two movies were.
The FJ! category was an-install precall of the big three. It was only a matter of which one was coming. 1896. Start writing. Done.
During think time the only question was how many (I expected at least one) of the players would err with what Jamelle ending up writing. It was one of those cases in the FJ! round when both the correct response and an incorrect response were easy to see coming.
I was surprised the correct response has no kind of archive hit since 2017 as I would have bet on it having appeared more recently.
Brian Adams was the only player 2/2 on big clues as he took a little time to get untracked. Colin probably had expectations of a longer run and being done on game 2 must cut like a knife.

The week is almost done: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6851
The transmission cut out briefly, causing me to miss J15 which I'll fill in later.
10 TS leaves room for a 4th podium win.

on DDs. Nixon in China was a total WAG.
Had the big three cases on precall, just needed the date for FJ.

Archive playthrough:
Coryat $42,800 (49R, 1W)
DD 3/3
FJ
Completed my best week yet: averages $42,560, 50.0 R, 0.6 W. 14/15 DD and 5/5 FJ for my first brag box of the season.
Gave myself credit for limelight on Idioms $800 because I'm pretty confident it fits.
Looks like this was a pretty evenly matched contest, would have loved to be able to watch.....
Another straightforward FJ. Predicting an unusually busy brag box this week.

Did I watch a different game? A big round of applause at end and Alex seemed excited about it. The whole thing was rather sloppy to me.
I precalled the other two big cases (assuming M v. M was the other one) but I had it written down before the music started.

I almost never precall, but when that category came, I thought that there was really only 4 (Marbury, McCulloch, Dred Scott, and Plessy) that they would ever ask about (Ex parte Milligan is pretty important, too, but I suspect that is WAY out of scope of J!).

Re: Friday, October 23, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Alex seems to think a decent third place score (close to $10,000) is a sign of a well played game. Please Forgive Me, but it's just a sign of the three players being evenly matched. They collectively earned a whole $26000 of the $54000 on the board.Bamaman wrote: ↑Fri Oct 23, 2020 5:47 pm Did I watch a different game? LSV: If you missed any of the movies I've got you covered to pick up all of the LSV trash for the 3rd game in a row.

Judges: limelight on Idioms for $800?
I usually do well with anagrams, but I was completely stumped by them today. I wasn't expecting "how novel" to mean "each correct response is the name of a novel" so $200 flew right over my head. But not even that added information was enough to prime the pump on the rest even though each un-anagrammed title was familiar to me.
Also skunked out of Dame Yankees. The existence of a Tomb Raider movie was new to me.
Movie Sum-Up was my third bagel. Can't say I've heard of any of them except Die Hard.
However, I ran Helpful Hints.
I love Hybrids, but unfamiliarity with "faun" was enough to account for my only miss. Human + goat had me thinking satyr but blanking on the name.
No guess on FJ! Plessy v. Ferguson rings a faint bell, but I could tell you literally nothing about it other than "historical thing that happened sometime within American history". I find that to be a problem way too often, my only "half knowing" things.
Lach Trash: basilisk, ubiquitous. Also got the Nixon in China DD

All puns aside, Colin would have a lot more to regret, had Jamelle gotten FJ correct and Brian responded incorrectly.MarkBarrett wrote:Colin probably had expectations of a longer run and being done on game 2 must cut like a knife.

I wonder if limelight was the intended response...The clue says "it threw a powerful beam." Spotlights still do. (Or will again, I should say... )
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey was hardly a bad guess...OK, I don't know if chess, rather than other games, is actually mentioned, and William Sadler is no Max Von Sydow, but he's had a pretty good career. If you don't know the original, it's better than nothing...I actually watched The Seventh Seal a couple months ago and still blanked on the name tonight...
Plessy was the one of the obvious precalls that I had to take a few seconds to recall...Glad I did!

Re: Friday, October 23, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
'Fraid not. Limelight lights up the whole stage. The clue specifies a "powerful beam on ONE actor".
EDIT: Hang on. This just in. Wikipedia says, "Limelights were employed to highlight solo performers in the same manner as modern followspots (spotlights)." It offers a footnote from an actual book to back up the claim. So this judge is reversing his decision and accepting limelight. I do think spotlight better fits the "full glare of public attention" part of the clue. Being in the spotlight is generally viewed as an uncomfortable experience and "glare" seems to imply that. The limelight, on the other hand, is something one "basks" in. It's enjoyable. But I don't think the connotations of "glare" are enough to make limelight incorrect.
