Kevin took an opening skunk segment and then worked his way up into getting the $2000 consolation prize by the end.

I was with Alex in collecting the trash on the "kit bag" tune stumper and I had zero expectations of the players knowing that one.

If I can get 51R and a 41,200 Coryat that probably means at least two things. LSV will not get a perfecto and I will miss the FJ! clue.

I stared at "hippo" on my paper looking for inspiration having taking a bad animal route to solve the clue. The shortcut of "Spanish king"? So easy and obvious, yet I overlooked that path. Greek for "lover"? I thought of words like "philosopher" and "philately" and quickly moved on from that train of thought. Trying to brainstorm islands got me nowhere.

Andy can wipe his brow after getting past that game with Deanna playing well. It's hard to fault her for not betting huge on DD3 as so few players would go as high as she ended up needing for a lock.

^_^/ . Though I was proud to come up with "Emily Blunt" as a guess for EB.

Playing top-to-bottom from the Archive, I guessed Agatha Christie (thinking they wanted a human) rather than Orient Express. It turns out that she was born in 1890, but her own metaphorical train's whistle was blowin' by 1889 (if just barely, given her birthday of September 15). In any case, the train route was born in 1883, so fut the whuck.
I'm smart and I want respect.

I hadn't heard of the $1200 or $1600 clues. I'm actually watching both Ozark and Peaky Blinders right now (I can't binge a single show, so I usually run through a rotation of them, one at a time. Right now I'm rotating through 10 shows). Both are very good.

Took about 15 seconds for FJ, but I figured it out.

Curious wager by the champ, he presumably picked his number to guarantee staying above 3rd place's current score on a miss, but he left himself just short of passing the leader's current score on a get. Not that it was likely Deanna was going to bet $0 but he has little to lose in adding another $601 to his bet. He is already dropping below Deanna's MSBIW score of $10,399 on a double or triple stumper. And how often is 3rd place betting $0 in this spot?

Completely misread FJ!, so that breaks my perfect week - at least there's no pressure for the next two days. I glossed over the word "Greek" and the fact that it was named for a KING - ie a person. Greek plus love would easily get me to "Phil", and I think I could pull out an island with "Phil" in it pretty easily. Instead, I was stuck en espanol, searching around for some combo of "ama/amour/amante" and "caballero/caballo". Leave it to me to get a pretty easy geograph-ish clue wrong.

This was a fun-heavy game, and I liked it. They manage to create the games-within-games that aren't exactly pure, straight trivia like giving the initials of VO artists, or "name that tune", or "name this famous person from a picture". Instead of asking "A popular tool is a Phillips this", they put it in the context of a book. While we get critical of writers, it takes a lot of work to make these games and give them a twist to make them fun.

Yup. That was a solid 0/5 for me too. Might as well have been a category about medieval Sentinelese sporting equipment.

Given Andy's wager, all she had to do was bet $0 on FJ. But how can you know a thing like that? Andy couldn't bet enough to overtake Deanna's score on a get without falling below Kevin's on a miss. So he made a reasonable but not entirely predictable choice to get close to Deanna on a get but still force Kevin to get FJ for any chance at a win. If only she'd known.

Only to help and not to mock. Today was not the first hit for any of the shows:
#8150, aired 2020-01-31 > $600: In 2019 Jason Bateman won an Emmy for his direction of this series & Julia Garner won for playing Missouri local Ruth Langmore
#7695, aired 2018-02-09 RECENT TV ROLES $600: He went from being a dad on "Arrested Development" to a dad on "Ozark"
#8160, aired 2020-02-14 TV VILLAINS $1200: Seen here, Jodie Comer kills it as the villainess Villanelle on this drama
#8107, aired 2019-12-03 ALL ABOUT EVE $1200: Eve on season 2 of "Killing Eve" works for this British foreign intelligence service
#7966, aired 2019-04-08 WHO'S ON TV? $400: On BBC America: "Killing" her
#7849, aired 2018-10-25 TV $800: In 2018 this former "Grey's Anatomy" actress had the title role as she hunted a hit woman on "Killing Eve"
#8143, aired 2020-01-22 TV SPIN-OFFS $800: "Mayans M.C."--the M.C. stands for Motorcycle Club
#8100, aired 2019-11-22 GOOD TELEVISION $1200: This "Mad Men" actress robs a supermarket on "Good Girls"
#7733, aired 2018-04-04 ON TV $2000: The title of this Netflix show about an early 20th c. British street gang that gets rich refers to their distinctive caps

It's in the current events thread, but be ready for The Queen's Gambit as it a certainty to appear later this season.

I wasn't sure whether those were real shows or whether the writers were pranking us.
Jeesh, what an oddball set of clues!

Not to mention the new season of The Crown with Olivia Colman repeating as the queen and Gillian Anderson as Maggie Thatcher...
I've watched 3 of 5 of those shows (Killing Eve has slid way downhill), seen ads for Mayans and read at least one article about the popularity of Peaky Blinders (I should check it out). I still had trouble remembering the titles (and even Jason Bateman's name!)

named for a 16th century Spanish king ...should have made quick work of this one...but I somehow looked right past that and focused on from the Greek for "lover of horses"...and got stuck on the Latin... I happily wrote down Ecu-ador...and then remembered where Ecuador comes from...
