For the silent L, I think I say it in "calm" and for stalk I suspect I include the L more in nightstalker than in beanstalk. Just stalk and I suspect no L, though not sure. Definitely no L said by me in salmon or behalf.

I haven't seen the stage production or the movie or read the book, but I have some basic idea of the plot, and the cast recording was my first exposure to it, so I checked the "stage production" box.

L in calm, but nothing else in the category.

I say the L in calm and stalker.

Seen Les Miz and Cats on stage. Got Javert from the show/film, never read the book. Checked the stage box.

Faintly pronounce the l in calm, silent in all of the others.

Javert from the book (technically, from studying J! trivia about the book)

Don't pronounce an L in any of those words.

No what the hellanodikai that clue was talking about. Personally, I pronounce the second L in hellanodikai, and the first one is silent.

Philippines took a little bit of thought. The others I had either before Alex was done reading or within seconds after. Cats was my only precall for Friday's FJ.

I read an abridged translation of the Hugo novel when I was 15. I'd guess it was around 350 pages. It wasn't until years later that I discovered I hadn't read the whole thing.

It's hard to gauge how I pronounce the listed words when I'm not paying attention to how I pronounce them. There's a whole Heisenberg problem going on here. But I think I use a lightly pronounced half swallowed L in the manner described by seaborgium elsewhere for all those words except behalf. That one's a straight behaff with no trace of an L anywhere.

Mrs. Penguin was watching me fill this out and said, "Yeah, you can check that box" when we got to Cats. I, uh, saw the Los Angeles production of Cats in 1985 or 86 with the girlfriend previous to her. To be fair, she saw Evita in 1981 with a boyfriend previous to me. So we're pretty much even on the Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical scale.

I think I got Javert largely thanks to TV Tropes. I certainly haven't read the book or seen any adaptations.
I say the L in calm and (usually) salmon.
I've seen Cats.

    :( Cringeworthy category for me, but FJ was gettable.
Don't remember ever reading or seeing Les Mis, probably pop culture osmosis. Since it starts with the book, I'll credit it.
 :| :| Had Canadian National but clammed.
I pronounce the l in "calm".

Pronounce the L in calm.
Probably got Javert from a recent PBS miniseries.
Thought the tower might be Canadian News, but stayed clam.
Never seen Cats.

Tue - "Russell Crowe"

I think I put the 'l' in 'calm'...at least moreso than the other four, which likely had some weight to my decision of going full Boston and replying "cahm" for that one.

I've seen a recent production of Cats, where Growltiger's Last Stand was swapped out for Pekes and Pollicles.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.
Latest movies (1-10): Everything Everywhere All at Once (10), Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken (6), Black Sunday /1960/ (6), Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (7)

All 5 correct, but 3 misses on the bonus clues. That doesn't happen very often.

Never read or seen Les Miz.

Forced to guess I would have said Canadian News.

I say the l in calm, stalk, and sometimes salmon.

2d week in a row with that annoying bump in the middle...This week was from very poor reading of the clue...
If I'd hazarded a guess on hellanodikai it would have been translator...
I'll give the stage Les Mis credit since it got me to read the book.
If the J! category is "Silent L," I don't say it... :geek:

So close to checking the golden box. It's on me, but I misread Wednesday's clue as having a name that comes from the Spanish for "lover of horses". I was stuck on caballos and amantes. I'm about 99% sure that if I had been speaking out my logic ala Millionaire, and someone had silently tapped on the word "Greek" a few times so I could see it, I'd come around. I know my Greek roots pretty well, and given enough time to Think!, I can definitely separate them from Latin roots (which would be similar to my Spanish dead end of "amar"/"amo") easily. Plus, I know hands that Philadelphia is the city of brotherly love. Although, I did literally just learn now due to curiosity that "Delphi" means "womb", but Google Translate tells me that Greek for brother is "adelfos", which I guess is close enough.

For the bonus clues, the first two I could have guessed correctly, given enough time. Carnegie would be a coinflip between Pittsburgh and Philly, because I'd assume a science building would belong to Carnegie-Mellon and not be related to Carnegie Hall. In the game, I clammed.

With the CN Tower, I said out loud "Canada National", but didn't hit the button, and corrected myself quickly to "...or is it Canadian National?" Again, I rightfully clammed on it.

NHO hellanodikai, but I'm pretty sure that, along with the new COVID medicine bamlanivimab, it's in the lyrics to Black Betty.

I'd say there's a hint of an L sound in my "calm" and maybe that's all, though I do hear it in "calving", "behalving" and "salmonella".

It often takes me a while to sort Greek and Latin roots, but when I thought about Spanish kings I remembered it at once.

I'd also thank cultural osmosis for giving me Javert. Joubert, by the way, was a French figure skater and (with "syndrome") a genetic disorder. J'ouvert is a street party, part of Carnival, popular in the Caribbean.

Never have seen Cats, but I knew the name of the source book.

Who'd have thought the Greeks had such along word for "judge"? I guess they had a lot of time on their hands, leastways* the upper classes.

* I've never used this word before.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Monday was a fairly quick solve.
Tuesday, I still have no idea who this Javert guy is. (Edit - OK, read the other posts in this thread and now I at least know what made it gettable for so many.)
Wednesday, played around with hippo and equine. I know very well that philo- is greek-ish for love, but it never crossed my mind. Annoyed me very much when the responses were revealed.
Thurs, made the connection pretty quick.
Friday, lost in the muck. I saw Cats in it's initial run in Los Angeles. Didn't like it much then. Like it more now. I was never very good at hearing the words in music. As an instrumentalist, I tended to get hung up on the notes and chords and harmony and rhythms. I do better now, but have to force myself to pay attention to words.
Only got the CN tower.

I have an l in calm. I've heard many others put the l in salmon. After thinking about the category, a better - but unsuitable for broadcast TV - title might be "L? No?"
