I didn't find that, but did notice that in 1970 when Bench hit 45 HR he played every position except pitcher, second base, and short!cinemaniax7 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 10:10 pm Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez has surpassed Johnny Bench’s 51-year-old major league record for most homers in a season by a catcher. 31HR as C, 15 as DH.

This reminds me of something interesting I read in Bill Bryson's The Body: A Guide for Occupants. Apparently we don't have receptors that can detect wetness and that's why we sometimes perceive a cold sensation as feeling wet.Volante wrote:...David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch
Very interesting book, by the way.

Anyone who's ever cut up habanero peppers knows that skin responds to capsaicin stimulation, too. And woe betide the unwary male cook who subsequently goes potty.

I am happy to say that I know both these guys and have been predicting for the last 2-3 years that they’d get it. I’m also happy to say that I had a small part to play in the development of this field.Volante wrote: ↑Wed Oct 06, 2021 1:36 pm Nobel Week, Day 3 - Chemistry

German-born Benjamin List and Scotland-born David MacMillan were announced as the winners at an event in Stockholm.
The technique, called asymmetric organocatalysis, has made it much easier to produce asymmetric molecules - chemicals that exist in two versions, where one is a mirror image of the other.

I was wondering, is the description of "molecules that are mirror images of one another" something different than chirality, or were the publicity people just afraid to use the word "chirality" in a general-public-audience press release?
Edit: based on this article, it's chirality

Re: 2021 Current Events Discussion Thread
The precise wording of the award is for "asymmetric [aka enantioselective] organocatalysis." For the interested, the field actually has its origins in the 1970s with the development of the Hajos-Parrish reaction at Hoffman-Laroche and Schering AG. This work lay dormant until the turn of the century for a variety of reasons, whereupon the work of MacMillan, Barbas and List helped revive the field.Robert K S wrote: ↑Thu Oct 07, 2021 11:29 amCongrats!!Woof wrote: ↑Wed Oct 06, 2021 9:46 pmI am happy to say that I know both these guys and have been predicting for the last 2-3 years that they’d get it. Leslie Bricusse, ‘Willy Wonka,’ ‘Goldfinger’ Songwriter, Dies at 90
Although he showed up in a couple of clues from 1990s-era episode, Bricusse rates a mention here for having written the lyrics to two of the best James Bond themes, "Goldfinger" and "You Only Live Twice."

I was watching a rerun of Mannix in the wee hours of this morning, and Dean Stockwell was the guest star. I think it was a coincidence because it seems too quick after news of his death broke for the network to have programmed a tribute.
