Comedian Norm Macdonald dead at 61. At least according to this article. Can't find other confirmation.

https://deadline.com/2021/09/norm-macdo ... 234833212/

Norm has a J! connection, of course, as the man who played Burt Reynolds (aka Turd Ferguson) on SNL's Celebrity Jeopardy parody. Expect that to come up this season.

Beatrice's sister Eugenie had a son earlier this year.
Beatrice's child will have an Italian title, "nobile donna", through Beatrice's husband, who is an Italian count.
Beatrice became a stepmother when she married Edo Mapelli Mozzi in 2020.
Beatrice's baby is the second grandchild for Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah Ferguson, 12th great grandchild for Queen Elizabeth.

Back in July, Julia Ducournau became the second female director to win the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival (it's usually in May but was delayed this year due of Covid). She won for her French-language film Titane. The first female director to win the Palme d'Or was Jane Campion in 1993 for The Piano.

New true crime podcast limited series called Love Is a Crime. I haven't listened, but it comes from Karina Longworth and Vanessa Hope. The two main characters are voiced by Jon Hamm and Zooey Deschanel.
My lucky numbers are 6, 66, and 666.

Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez has surpassed Johnny Bench’s 51-year-old major league record for most homers in a season by a catcher. Bench, a Hall-of-Famer and one of the greatest catchers ever, hit 45 homers for the Cincinnati Reds in 1970.

I was curious how many of Perez' homers were hit while he was catching this season (he's played 117 games behind the plate and 34 as DH per baseball-reference.com). I didn't find that, but did notice that in 1970 when Bench hit 45 HR he played every position except pitcher, second base, and short!

The Tony award nominations were announced today for a season dramatically curtailed by the coronavirus. In an interesting turn of events, the only person nominated in the Lead Actor in a Musical category is Aaron Tveit from Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Only four musicals were eligible for awards, and all the nominations came from three of them. (Sorry about your luck, cast and crew of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.) Neither of the other two musicals (Jagged Little Pill [based on the Alanis Morissette album] and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) have a male leading role. According to Tony rules, Tveit still has to be voted for on 60% of ballots in order to win, so he's effectively running against "no award".
Tveit beat out "no award" yesterday to claim the Best Lead Actor in a Musical Tony. Moulin Rouge! won a total of 10 Tonys; the only musical-related awards it didn't win were for Lead Actress (Adrienne Warren in Tina), Featured Actress (Lauren Patten in Jagged Little Pill), and Book (Diablo Cody for JLP).

The Inheritance, a play by Matthew Lopez that was inspired by E.M. Forster's Howards End, won four Tonys, including Best Play. Actress Lois Smith, who won the Featured Actress in a Play Tony for her role in it, became the oldest winner of an acting Tony at age 90. David Alan Grier, perhaps still best known as a long-time cast member of the 1990s sketch show In Living Color, won the Featured Actor in a Play Tony for his turn in A Soldier's Play.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will propose removing 22 animals and one plant from the endangered species list on Wednesday, declaring them extinct.
The Ivory Billed Woodpecker is the biggest name on the list, not having been seen allegedly since 2004, 1944 confirmed.

Complete list here (which took me way too long to find...)

Tommy Kirk has died at the age of 79.

Kirk appears three times in clues in the J! Archive, though never as a correct response. However, for those of us "of a certain age," he had a respectable career in live-action Disney motion pictures.

Tommy Kirk starred in:

Old Yeller (1957)
The Shaggy Dog (1959)
Swiss Family Robinson (1960)
The Absent Minded Professor (1961)
Son of Flubber (1963)
The Misadventures of Merlin Jones (1964)
The Monkey's Uncle (1965)

Kirk also starred opposite Annette Funicello in Pajama Party (1964) for American International Pictures.

Nobel week, day 1: Physiology or Medicine

...David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch

David Julius utilized capsaicin, a pungent compound from chili peppers that induces a burning sensation, to identify a sensor in the nerve endings of the skin that responds to heat. Ardem Patapoutian used pressure-sensitive cells to discover a novel class of sensors that respond to mechanical stimuli in the skin and internal organs.
And yes, apparently capsaicin works as an analog for actual temperature heat, not just mouth burning heat.

Mark Zuckerberg has today lost somewhere between $6 and $7 billion (depending on which headlines you believe), and a medium single-digits number of places on the richest-people lists, because of coincident with a daylong Facebook outage that has yet to be resolved. Some news reports have stated that employees have not been able to access physical facilities in order to fix the problem because their keycards don't work. At the same time, a whistleblower named Frances Haugen has been bringing to light some of the company's business activities prioritizing profits over dissemination of truthful information.

Nobel Week, day 2: Physics

Climate change. It basically boils down to climate change:

https://www.commondreams.org/news/2021/ ... imate-work
Three scientists on Tuesday were awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics for their "revolutionary contributions" to the world's understanding of the climate—and how human activity, such as the emission of carbon dioxide, impacts it.

Syukuro Manabe demonstrated how increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere lead to increased temperatures at the surface of the Earth....

Klaus Hasselmann created a model that links together weather and climate, thus answering the question of why climate models can be reliable despite weather being changeable and chaotic....

Giorgio Parisi discovered hidden patterns in disordered complex materials. His discoveries are among the most important contributions to the theory of complex systems....
