Italy wins the 2021 European Football Championship, commonly known as the Euros, over host nation England (3-2) on penalty kicks after regulation ended 1-1.

Italy wins its 2nd Euros behind a stout veteran defense led by Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, who ended up scoring their only goal.

Meanwhile, England's woes continue, as they come up short once again, fittingly on penalty kicks. Their only tournament win was in the 1966 World Cup. This was their only Finals appearance in any tournament whatsoever since that Final 55 years ago.

Fun fact: the motto for England was the song "Football's Comin' Home" by comedian Frank Skinner, which alludes to an English victory "bringing football home" to where the game was invented some time in the mid-19th century. The Italian's countered this motto with "Football's Comin' to Rome".

Just saw this story in the New York Times and it reminded me of the recent Jeopardy! flap:
This Moth’s Name Is a Slur. Scientists Won’t Use It Anymore.

The Entomological Society of America will no longer refer to common species of insects as “gypsy moths” and “gypsy ants,” because their names are derogatory to the Romani people.

The song is actually called 3 lions. Football's coming home is a lyric in the song. David Baddiel also wrote it.

Leaving this note here rather than "discussion" because it's study-guide material:
Her surname was given to her by her father, Jawara Spacetime, in honor of John Coltrane.
She has three Guinness World Records for dribbling and juggling basketballs.

Golf name to know: Collin Morikawa, who just won the 2021 Open Championship in Scotland. Combined with his August 2020 win at the PGA Championship, he's the first player since Bobby Jones in 1926 to win two majors in eight or fewer starts.

The IOC has added an extra word to the Olympic Motto: "Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together".

The sport of ski mountaineering has been added to the program for the 2026 Winter Games in Milano / Cortina. It involves climbing up a mountain path under one's own power and then skiing back down.

The Milwaukee Bucks are the 2021 NBA Champions, defeating the Phoenix Suns in 6 games.

It is their first title since 1971 when they were led my a young man by the name of Lew Alcindor, who would soon change his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar after converting to Islam.

This current team was led by their star, 2-time League MVP and now NBA Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, nicknamed "The Greek Freak". He scored 50 points in the deciding Game 6. His name has come up twice on the show already, though they have yet to ask anyone to pronounce his last name, which is AHN-tet-ə-KOOM-poh.

The 2032 Summer Olympics have been awarded to Brisbane, Australia. (This was widely expected as they were seen as the only serious candidate, but the selection was made official yesterday.)
This will be the third time Australia has hosted the Olympics, after Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

For those wondering where the name comes from, Depression-era Art Deco statues, on pylons of the bridge that leads across the Cuyahoga River to the team's stadium, are called the Guardians of Traffic.

Image

As seen in this image, the "traffic" being guarded includes a horse-drawn stagecoach, two motorized trucks, a covered Conestoga wagon, an early 1930s luxury passenger automobile, a motorized cement-mixing truck, a hay wagon, and a dump truck loaded with gravel.

Image

As far as I can tell, the baseball team will not be using images of the Guardians of Traffic in their branding.
