Well this is harder than I thought.

Logging in at 12:55 EST to record Jeopardy, and realizing it won't be Alex... :(

Started off with "Viva Zapata!" before the correct answer smacked me in the face. Perfect score on FJs for KJ-hosted eps.

Hilarious to see what Wayne's post did to the view count for the thread already putting it over 200.

Ken's debut in 2004 there was a Julia and Ken's debut as guest host also had a Julia.

Yes, the opening was one of the regular ones for this season with Alex still shown.

Ken's earpiece was not in after Johnny's introduction but it was very visible as the first segment concluded and it looked different than the one Alex used.

Ken had a borderline chuckling, "No" when the contestant negged with Costeau for the Silent Spring author.

Anyone want a silly assignment? List all of the different affirmatives that Ken used when the players were correct. There was a good variety and I liked that Ken was able to mix it up.

Tanay brushed off missing DD1 like it was no big deal and seemed to get the hang of Ken's reading rhythm to do well on the buzzer. I bet it was strange for the buzzer arming person to deal with a new clue reader. A contestant trying to ring in with the zen method of anticipation may have some trouble dealing with slight variations in Ken's delivery while a wait-for-the-lights person with good reflexes may be more consistent.

The FJ! category had me write three precalls of artists with The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones and Elvis. I figured The Beatles were out due to the clue in KNIGHTED.

The FJ! clue had me Pavlov 1964 movie to Mary Poppins for some reason without ever considering "The rain in Spain" of My Fair Lady. Running songs that Julie Andrews sang got me nowhere although I did take a second to make sure there was no way "Supercali..." could work.

Back at square one I got on track with "meadows" in the clue to get one key word. From there I connected to a movie title. Oh, that works for "long live" and I was done. Only then did I realize one of my precalls was in the neighborhood from the start. In all it took me about ten seconds so plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the think music.

Ken was comfortable enough to give Tanay a little zinger about not betting anything when the contestant had more healthy wagers on the DDs.

The ending had the Alex message still in place as it likely will through the end of the season if not beyond.

Ken was easily a 7/10 as host if not higher. We saw all the clues and Ken did well with the chat segment to demonstrate he can work his own brand of humor into that part of the show.

This is a case where knowing the exact wrong amount of Spanish hurt me. Was stuck on "Viva los Matorrales" and trying to figure out what other word could mean "meadow." Had I just backed up and thought "name a movie that starts with Viva Las ____" I would have gotten there easily.

Have at it: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6901

Do Julias ever win when Ken is around?

Hope the CCs as some point cast a KJL relative that will make for a fun chat time.

59 R (Missed The 4400, negged with True Detective forgetting the category.)
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: (Awakenings), Tenderloin, Eye Teeth, Out on a Limb, Eagle, Tower Hill, Choir/Quire

I am quite familiar with Tanay and his quizzing background. In fact, I just watched his Magnusson Trebek Trophy match.

Now that I have had time to rewatch today's opening and compare it to one from last week I can see there are slight changes. While Alex is still seen, the larger images of him in a more close-up view are gone. It's so subtle that it's barely noticeable from the previous weeks this season.

It was so weird not Having Alex as the Host but i thought Ken did Fairly well. i thought he may have been reading the clue a little too quickly, but the contestants understood him and thats all that matters.

i Put Bye Bye Birdie in Final so at least i got a Movie with Ann Margret in it lol

So awkward not hearing the cadence of Alex's name as the host is introduced

Ken, who is fluent in Spanish, does it well

Ken's been solid so far, the contestant interviews will be his first real test

He did fairly well

If Jim had a USGS topo map, 20 years old is pretty good

Never heard of "eye teeth"

Glad Ken got a full clear on his first day

Coryat: $38,000

J: 19R11P. Very rough board for me. Got DD. 5/5 on Nonfiction. 4/5 on New York Society and Earth at Night. 2/5 on Television. 1/5 on Beefy.

DJ: 24R6P. Got both DDs. 5/5 on Homophone, 1001, and Nights. 4/5 on Hill and Movies. 1/5 on Artists.

FJ: Initially thought of "Viva la Vida," but obviously that didn't fit the category. Got stuck for a while, then the "Viva Viagra!" ad from several years ago popped into my head and I realized that that tune had to be it, from there it took me a second or two to get to "Viva Las Vegas."

LT: Eagle, choir/quire

I thought Ken did an admirable job. I kept expecting Tanay to say: “I’ll make it a true daily double, Alex.”

This is where Ken's extensive experience moderating NAQT matches was made most clear; they burn through questions lickety-split and you tend to get dinged by the team coaches in your reviews if you aren't reading fast enough. I would expect the majority of the boards to be cleared while Ken is at the helm.

Coryat $29,800 (40R, 3W)
DD 3/3
FJ :(

The J! round has been killing me lately. Three of the last four have played really tough for me - my three worst of the whole season. My negs were at least things I thought were reasonable: Vulgarity for Vice, eland for the large antelope, and lost the Erik the Red/Leif Erikson coinflip that I always seem to lose.

Didn't fare much better in DJ! Need to get back on the wagon here.

Was pleasantly surprised with Ken. He was pretty true to Alex's style, kept the game going at a good pace, but had his own style of commentary. There is no match for Alex's voice though.

Either Ken was reading wayyyy too fast, or they sped him up on the edit to make up time

Nothing about this feels right, but I’ll keep watching

Got as far as Viva and just gave up

Negged on that DD with The Awakening and had a hard time convincing myself Lady and The Tramp was right

I turned it on in the middle of the second clue so I was a little taken aback not to hear Alex’s voice. Did Ken say anything at the beginning beyond the usual greetings?

I was pleasantly surprised how well he did. Being very familiar with the show and how it works was no doubt a help for him. Reserving judgment on if he deserves the job until I see more of him and the other auditions.

No guess on FJ.

Same, except I wanted it to be Viva los Prados...

J! will live on. Ken really seemed to hold reverence for even a substitute job.

0/5 in New York Society. Those clues seemed massively YEKIOYD.

Also skunked Nonfiction and Earth at Night in Color. No idea why, but the clues just weren't clicking for me.

NHO "Tri-tip". How does anyone know that?!

I've only ever heard it "cut your teeth", never "cut your eye teeth".

DJ! was an "I don't even know" fest for me. I got all but $1200 in Homophones, but Grant Wood was my only other get.

Knights for $1200 was MASSIVE negbait for Paul McCartney.

Ask me to translate from Spanish and I can usually get it. No exception here; I had it before Ken was done reading the clue.

Lach Trash: choir/quire

Ken did well. I could get used to him. There were times when it seemed like he was trying too hard. But that's the kind of thing that disappears in a week or two. And to be fair, I was paying a lot more attention to the hosting aspect of the show than I normally do. So I was bringing my own weirdness to the situation as well.

FJ wasn't an instaget, but the first word seemed obvious. After rejecting "Zapata" and noting that I don't know the Spanish word for "meadows", it was easy enough to circle back around and realize what the response had to be. Total time elapsed: less than 5 seconds.
