Was thinking west to east for the Mediterranean countries and only got Algeria when pairing it with Croatia

Wrote Ginsberg first and changed on Thursday.

Blanked on horses for Gulliver though should have had it.

Negged with Ur for Beersheba.

Clammed on quarter.

Spain/Cyprus; was going back and forth between Spain and France, good to know even if I'd gotten that right I'd still have been way off.
Hickok (sure of) and Cody (needed two names). I would never have guessed a military man.
Belfast, the only Northern Irish city I could name.

I think if it mattered I'd have said "Party Like It's 1999," but playing at home with no stakes I was confident enough "1999" was the full title. I wouldn't recognize the song if it bit me, though.
I considered Ginsberg, but with the only reason to not say Kerouac being that it was easy and obvious, I stuck with the easy and obvious.

Ewan McGregor film got me Trainspotting.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

Tuesday, got sidetracked into songs that might have been used in political campaigns 17 years apart and never got to Prince.

Had both Londonderry and Derry

Went north-south. Once I had Monaco, Algeria was easy though I did worry a little about Libya. Had (Party Like It's) 1999 to be safe. The math involved addition rather than subtraction so it was easier under pressure. I didn't bother calculating 17 years forward from 1999. Probably should have though in this case it wouldn't have changed my response. Had both Bills on Wednesday. If I'd thought of Custer I think I'd have subbed him in, but for which Bill? I don't know. Started with Kerouac, toyed with Ginsburg, stuck with Jack. He just seemed more likely, especially for a category about AUTHORS rather than POETS. Thought of Derry Girls and still went with Belfast.

Knew the Gulliver's Travels horse race so that was no trouble. Didn't get Beersheba off the Bibilical angle. I'm suspecting those who got it did so more off the modern "Now the largest city in the Negev Desert" angle. Those of you who got it can let me know if I'm right or wrong. "Show no quarter" and "No quarter was allowed" (from "Growltiger's Last Stand" in Cats among other places) are phrases I know, so no trouble there.

I thought of shoeing horses for ferroequinologist. I might have pursued that line but by then Ken was reading the bit about Ewan McGregor which suggested a whole new... ahem... train of thought. 8-) I knew in the early days the train was sometimes called an iron horse, so that didn't... ahem... throw me. 8-) 8-)

4.5/5 this week; I had Custer but guessed Crazy Horse for the other. I would have written Derry but I knew it was aka Londonderry so I checked the "Derry" and "both" options.

My first thought was horseshoeing, but Ewan McGregor tipped me in the right direction.

In the game thread, I had predicted the Old West FJ would poll around 40%, but 85% will have gotten at least one.

So far 44% and 88%. :D

I would have guessed the song title was the 4-word phrase, and by the time I thought of it I wouldn't have had time to write it. I should have scribbled the year... :(
Couldn't come up with Hickok, a name I should have made sure I had in the commercial break..But I wasn't connecting to Custer anyway...
On Friday I wrote the shortest response.
McGregor movie got me trainspotting...

Algeria and Monaco both helped on the Med clue. So did the recent FJ about the pilot who flew across.

We used to have on the wall a painting from a painting, by my grandmother. We weren't quite sure whether it was of Custer or of Hickock.

I felt it had to be "the king of the Beats".

"Gave no quarter nor asked any", or some such, was quite familiar.

Horseshoes, though I don't think I'd have rung*. I was thinking that "farrier" should be part of any such word.

Derry.

*Aha, it was a Daily Double. Tally-ho then, or en garde, or once more unto the breach.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Beersheba is Pavlovian for me for city in the Negev (i.e., modern).

We're definitely not going to see 'All 5' polling over 50% this week.

Strange week; got the two triple stumpers and missed the rest of the FJs.

Mentally traveled the Med from east to west. Completely spaced out Monaco and started with Lebanon, winding up in France.

Have visited both Deadwood and the Little Big Horn battlefield.

Ginsberg.

Have also visited Derry/Londonderry -- which is the way I answered the clue.

When I originally read that the Houyhnhnms' name was based on a horse whinny, the sound I created in my mind was nothing like the actual pronunciation. I think the first time I heard it out loud may have the Ted Danson TV miniseries.

Had a brief flash about horseshoes at very first glance, but it didn't last but an instant before Ewan McGregor nailed it to Trainspotting.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

Said Tolkien on Thursday and Belfast on Friday.
I've heard of a place called Derry in Ireland, but didn't know anything else about it.
Horses was my only miss in the category.
Said Horseshoes on the DD, more of a WAG than anything though
