It certainly occupied my mind. But not only is it too late for Poe, and too American for the category, it's not a novel.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 9:54 pm Impressive performance by John. Rough FJ. I knew the work in question couldn't be the one by Poe. He died before the Civil War. But I still thought Paris seemed like a solid guess. Then, 15 seconds in, I thought of the correct work. I've read Crime and Punishment more than once and was able to remember its setting and thus switch to the correct response. Sympathies to those who didn't know the setting and guessed Moscow. Rough FJ.
EDIT: Looking up "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" I see that it also involved the murders of two women. So for those not familiar with the death date of Poe, Paris is a really strong attractor.

Another tough FJ and we’re still in the mood of constantly dethroning champions. At least the front game was pretty good.

Or if you latch on with too much confidence and not think about it. Not that it would've mattered, I'd never have gotten to C&P, and it's one of the rare few, if not the only, school assigned novels I've read multiple times.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 9:54 pm EDIT: Looking up "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" I see that it also involved the murders of two women. 37R. 3/4 on big clues. I missed Quebecois. I didn't know Quebec was the largest province by area and it seems really obvious now. I read Crime and Punishment when I was working as a tutor without a lot of money, like the protagonist, and I remember it pretty well.
Did poorly on The B__G's, States By National Forest, and Non-Vocabulary.
Missed transistor and said bits, which is a similar but separate factoid called Keck's Law instead of Moore's Law. The number of bits grows by generation faster than the number of transistors. Missed Miguel Cervantes and said Don Quixote, ouch. I said DUI instead of drunk driving, that's wrong.
I'm not familiar with Wild at Heart but sometimes I like David Lynch movies so I'll check that one out. That was the only movie and clue I missed in that category.
I was really hoping John would go for a true daily double on the J round DD. He would have gone into double jeopardy with $18,800 if he got it right and he would have been 2 clues off the lead if he missed. He played really well and got a lot of money anyway. Look forward to seeing him play again tomorrow.
My rule of thumb: always bet the maximum on the J round DD and always bet the maximum on the DJ round DD if you find it on the first 8 clues. Don't even think about wagering until the last 22 clues of the game. That leaves plenty of time to catch up in case you miss.

I said Hermione and I think it should count. It does come from the name of a Greek messenger god rather a Greek word for a godly messenger but the god was also used as a word, at least a proper noun.mas3cf wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 4:43 pm Said Hermia for Angela. I figured the main hurdle in FJ was understanding that the clue was about Crime and Punishment, and followed the KISS principle to Moscow. Once Ken told Michael he was wrong, I guessed St. Petersburg. [edit: called Ken Alex]
Michael talked about having a daughter with a July 4 birthday, then got Born on the Fourth of July as part of a B&A clue, and there didn't seem to be any acknowledgment.

Even better (for John's score, if not for the discomfort of narrowly missing a lock), if Michael had made a TDD and then not negged attempting to say Yggdrasil, he'd have had $16,400 and John only would have had to lose $401.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 1:53 pm If Michael farmed DD3 then that is 14800 for the FJ! round and 29600 at best. Perhaps John would have won $5K more if that happened as he would not 7600 spare to bet.
It's not an issue of whether Hermia is a name, but of whether Hermes is a "messenger from God," and I'd neg you on that basis.mas3cf wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 4:43 pm Said Hermia for Angela. Negged myself, but upon further review...

Yeah, I also landed on Rue Morgue for the first half of the think music before I realized Poe was American and it wasn't a novel. Was able to switch over to C&P (a book I have been meaning to read for years but have never gotten past the first 50 pages or so) with plenty of time.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

Coryat: $38,600
48 R/1 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Angela, Carnival of the Animals
Chalk up another "got the novel, went Moscow."
John looked very strong in this game. It will be interesting to see if he keeps this up for a long run or sputters out quickly.

I have read C&P but it’s been quite a while and I didn’t remember two women murdered - had I gotten to C&P, I would have gotten the city though. Cold comfort. Said Paris just to have something.
Glad to see Wild At Heart in a clue; Nicolas Cage’s best movie IMHO and Im a big Lynch fan.

I did FJ first, so I wasn't put off by Peter's having appeared in the regular game. I read the book about 15 years ago; it was never assigned to me.
The "barhopping" clue needed to be verbed.
I can't say I was expecting MRI or hummingbird in Non-vocabulary.
I was inspired by the Enigma Variations clue to look up the surname "Nigma" (as in Edward Nigma, a/k/a the Riddler). It seems he is likely of Tatar extraction.
I'm smart and I want respect.

In a classic novel from 1866, the murders of 2 women take place in this city
+1. Didn't realize the Mann work was so much later, and don't know a thing about it beyond the title, a plausible match for a clue that seemed to point at a title city. Does it even include a murder, never mind two? [Doesn't look like it.]Foretopman wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 9:46 pmI went down exactly the same path (canal?)BrigadierSolo13 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 8:00 pm Man, what a rough final. Demeter was my first guess. But I did think of Ceres and probably wouldn't have rung in due to the risk of losing on Demeter and handing my opponent the amount I lost for a double whammy.BrigadierSolo13 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 10:46 pm Did anyone else get rolled in FEMALE FIRST NAME for $2000 and said Ceres instead of Demeter, because Chloe begins with a stinkin' C?

Was a hair too slow on "barhopping" to run B_G's, then somehow mixed up sequoia and magnolia for a 4/5 in Forest.
The cogs were turning but I couldn't quite get to Orwell on the Literary Allusions DD in time. Still, 4/5 is better than I expected in that.
Facts & Figures for $200: My stepdad is one of those 36 million.
Facts & Figures for $800 was ENORMOUSLY MASSIVE HONKING HUGE NEGBAIT for speeding, and AS ALWAYS, I bit on it. Any reason I should know that was looking for drunk driving? I can't possibly fathom someone drunk-driving 80 times before getting caught.
Before & After was a mess for me. I got tongue-tied and only barely managed to spit out $400. Had the Before and not the After on $800 and $1600, but recognized neither at $1200.
$2000 really stung since I have seen, and enjoyed, both of those movies. But I just couldn't process the clue. "Peter Quill" was throwing me for a loop since I don't think they say his full name at any point in GotG, and I was even more distracted by trying in vain to dredge the name of the Tim Allen movie. I do agree that would be a fantastic crossover.
Royal Houses had "0/5 for Hammer" written all over it. I was only 5R in DJ!
No guess on FJ! I've heard of Crime and Punishment but somehow never matched it to an author. Not like this vague-ass clue would have gotten me anywhere within a lightyear of it anyway.

That definitely makes this a tricky one. You can get most of the way there and still get off the train at the wrong station. It'll be interesting to see how Moscow polls vs St. Pete.seaborgium wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:08 pm I figured the main hurdle in FJ was understanding that the clue was about Crime and Punishment, and followed the KISS principle to Moscow. I noticed that too. Michael took a while to get his response out, so I think the focus was on that rather than on the coincidence. Too bad. That would've been a fun moment. On the plus side, Ken was quick enough to quip that Nolan Ryan didn't just make an impression on John Fochte, he also made one (well, several) on Robin Ventura. It's really getting hard for me to imagine that any of the other serious candidates will have a better extended audition. I'm ready to install Ken. It's fine if they want to get him some voice coaching, though I don't personally think he needs it. As long as it doesn't throw off his delivery.seaborgium wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:08 pm Michael talked about having a daughter with a July 4 birthday, then got Born on the Fourth of July as part of a B&A clue, and there didn't seem to be any acknowledgment.

I can't possibly fathom how often we would all get arrested for speeding if we averaged one arrest per 80 times. I can't even fathom everyone merely getting ticketed for speeding at that rate. And the clue said there was a whole organization devoted to opposing this activity. What would that be? Mothers Against Rapid Driving? Speeding was so clearly not correct that I think I might have snorted a little when Michael gave that response. Not that I'm criticizing him. I just put it down to nerves and the lights. But soberly considered, speeding wasn't anywhere on the board and drunk driving was obviously indicated from several angles.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 09, 2021 2:16 am Facts & Figures for $800 was ENORMOUSLY MASSIVE HONKING HUGE NEGBAIT for speeding, and AS ALWAYS, I bit on it. For those who said DUI, I suspect that would have received credit despite the slightly expanded scope of the term.
