Re: Thursday, February 11, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Good thing I stuck with the station just in case they showed the end of the game. Play was shown with a few clues remaining in the DJ! round and the DDs were already played.
The FJ! category had me spend the break to make sure I knew quickly the Best Picture winners from 2010 to present and to consider names J! likes such as Woody Allen, Streisand and Clooney. I thought about Nicholson & Streep nominated a lot.
The FJ! clue was one where I wrote the correct name instantly though spent all of think time to make sure I was not overlooking anyone else it could possibly be.
John made his sole solve pay off big time as a 4th win is key to having a chance to make the ToC plus returning tomorrow to try to sweep the week.
Anything around movies & awards can often spell trouble for some J! players. It happens all the time. I can't wait to see how Stan set himself up to lead for the FJ! round.

Ill be glad when the STEM Week is Over.
I put Down Brando for final. Oops. i was thinking Streetcar, which was 51. Didn't really hone in the "4" part of that clue well.

Re: Thursday, February 11, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
A little strange to watch the game out of order although some of you are used to reading the FJ! clue early and watching J! & DJ! later.
Ken got in a nice dig at the end of MARITIME DISASTERS after the last 3 clues went TS. I did not know $1200 or recall $1600, so only the $2K clue kept me above the players.
It was interesting knowing the final scores and then getting to see how they got there. Both guys doubled up on DDs in the DJ! round and had me guessing wrong as I thought perhaps John missed one for conservative play and that Stan may have added more than $3K.
On to archiving and I won't need a lunch break.

Re: Thursday, February 11, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Archive playthrough:
Coryat $41,000 (49R, 1W)
DD 2/3
FJ
This game had two things I dread: a wordplay/vocab DD and an Oscars FJ. Whiffed on the former, knew the latter cold. Could have even told you it was 1954 if I had to. On the DD, was stuck in a rabbit hole thinking about clouds. How my brain got there is beyond me.
John keeps on rollin', but his debut stands out as his best performance. Hope to see him get back to that form tomorrow...

Not my category but Disney was my first thought and stuck with it after considering DeMille. I got a little nervous because I thought Ken was about to say he was still alive.

Speaking of Dr. Frauke Neuser:
I wonder what the intersection between Sony Pictures and the Olay Company might be.

No offense, but how did you not know the $1200 clue? We just had a Gitchee Gumee/Superior clue a little while ago, didn't we?MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Feb 11, 2021 6:09 pm Ken got in a nice dig at the end of MARITIME DISASTERS after the last 3 clues went TS. $31,800 Coryat? I'll take it.
NHO "Super Nanny". I got only "M*A*S*H" thanks to blanking on "Family Matters".
Poll request on "hippo".
I could have stared at "nilpferd" for a week and never figured out "hippo". "Amphibious" misled me to actual amphibians and trying to make frog/toad/newt happen from that word. How were you supposed to figure that one out anyway? It's not a cognate nor does it have a recognizable root. How were you supposed to get "hippo" from that anyway?
Also forgot the category and couldn't suss out "mirror" for my only miss in Superstition.
And to make a trifecta of 4/5s, the DD in 1930s America threw me since "I pledge this" had me thinking that the missing word would be a verb, not a noun.
Fourth 4/5 was Same Vowel, where I kept trying to say Cyrillic for Urdu but couldn't pull the former.
And fifth 4/5, and an "all but the first clue" moment, when I forgot the category and was unable to dredge "Odysseus" from the recesses of my brain.
However, I finally got a run with Title Instrument.
Yes, I also got the shopping mall clue.
No guess on FJ! Disney making "short subjects" is literally nowhere in my brain.
Lach Trash: Pele, edifice, Google, Dr. Lister, Lake Superior

Sony is based in Japan, which is an island country in Asia, as is Indonesia, whose most populous island is Java, which is a synonym for coffee. Coffee with milk is known as "café au lait" which sounds like "café olay".MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Thu Feb 11, 2021 7:30 pm

It is a worthy cause but other than the Tuesday lady I wouldn’t want any of them to read clues again.

This is the second time during his hosting stint that Ken has blown the pronunciation of an e sound in the name of a Minnesota city. Edina is pronounced with a long e. Ken used a short e.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

"2-reel short subject" made me think documentaries rather than animation. I said Jacques Cousteau.
