Moscow
Zeppelin
Demosthenes

Negged with Thoreau
No guess on hippo

For econgator: No guess on Lake Superior as I quickly gave up on the clue and did not recall the Gitche Gumee clue from earlier in the season. I tend to often flash a quick white flag on things about the Great Lakes as little sticks well for me.

Moscow on Monday
Aristotle on Friday

Could have come up with "nilpferd" if prompted for the German word for hippopotamus.

Considered Rue Morgue on Monday. Knew it was too early but liked Paris as a possibility so stuck with it... for 15 seconds. Then I realized what the correct work was and, fortunately, knew which of the two Russian cities to associate it with. Went with New Hampshire on Tuesday. Should've focused on the 3200 mile figure which is ridiculously huge. For Wednesday I started with Fokker, tried to think of the Red Baron's plane and couldn't, detoured to Bismarck before getting airborne again and lighting on Zeppelin. Happily didn't stop there but made the final hop to Herr Hindenburg. Got to Disney pretty quickly on Thursday and couldn't think of anything I liked better. Straight miss on Friday. Just didn't have the relevant information in my head. Guessed Solon. At the last second I thought of Pythagoras and wished I had switched to him but it was too late. No harm, no foul as AT used to say.

Clammed on all three extra clues. Forced to guess, I might have come up with the capital of Croatia. In real time, I forgot the category and didn't even realize that's what the clue boiled down to. For the amphibious mammal I probably would've guessed walrus. "Nilpferd" just didn't break apart at the right spot for me to key in on "nil". For the shopping mall, I'd almost certainly have guessed Minneapolis but would have worried it was St. Paul. Would St. Paul have counted? Is a suburb of one ipso facto a suburb of the other?

I had to read Self-Reliance in high school and never forgot which of those authors wrote that drivel.

Moscow (right novel, wrong city), Welles (couldn't talk myself into Disney).
Forgot the category on the capital of Croatia.
Thoreau.

Just blanked on Diogenes' name, as well as the capital of Croatia. I needed more time to get to hippo (but only because it made sense as "large amphibious mammal"). I often mix up rhino and hippo...but I don't mix up Thoreau with Emerson.

No option for Pythagoras? I may not have gotten Diogenes, but I knew it couldn't be Aristotle.

I thought Dostoyevsky worked closer to the turn of the century than he apparently did. Wasn't familiar with the details of the title Crime anyways. Went with London to have something.

Tuesday I guessed Delaware.

I had Moscow on Monday. On the mall clue my mind was certainly in Minnesota but I wasn't willing to guess. I got Emerson.

Friday ruined a good week. I guessed Aristotle but I was pretty sure it would’ve been someone older.

Knew Walt Disney was the all-time Oscar champ, so....

I knew Edina from crosswords, and my check just now shows "twin cities suburb" as a sometimes clue, so I think one can claim credit with St. Paul, though it is clearly nearer to Minneapolis. Edina-wise, one should also be ready for "Dairy Queen headquarters", or "Patsy's Ab Fab pal".

I also processed the animal as "nilp ferd" and in any case had no idea of the German for horse.

I also also think "colors of Monopoly properties" gives trivia a bad name.

Knew it was Emerson. "Person whom all read" is one of the better literary anagrams out there, especially with its ambiguous verb tense.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Was thinking of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde Monday and said London. Forgot that World Literature is going to usually exclude anything British. Even if I guessed the right novel, I would have said Moscow.

Immediately went to WW2 planes Wednesday and said Messerschmitt without a lot of conviction.

Greek Philosophers is a kryptonite category for me. Not getting this one without a lot more help from the clue.

Was out of the room for the hippopotamus question and was spoiled by reading the board.

A turble week. Downright turble.

Dr. J and Mr. H led me to London on Monday, misread 320 for 3200 and found myself in Rhode Island on Tuesday. Was headed for Antithsenes but couldn't pull even the wrong name in time. Hindenburg and Disney both came pretty quickly.

Nilpferd? Isn't that a town in Connecticut? I know the capital of Croatia is Zagreb, but couldn't get Sarajevo to move aside. Edina is about the only Twin Cities suburb I can think of, probably from crosswords, so that led to one-third of my greens for the week.

Well, there's always next week.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

Now I've got a Bangles song stuck in my head.

With 80 votes in here are the results on Monday's FJ:

St. Petersburg (correct): 14 (18%)
Moscow (wrong city, right country): 17 (21%)
Paris: 22 (28%)
London: 17 (21%)
Other/No Response: 10 (13%)

It's not exactly an unfair clue--or maybe I just think that because I'm in the 18%--but it's a toughie.

16% for nilpferd is pretty telling.
