I went 4/5 on the dice rolls, never heard of Hicks.
If I were more suspicious I would think they made up Jimmy Hicks. I've paid for entire trips by throwing bones and I've never heard it.
I wagged it because Jimmy Hicks rhymes with 6, but I've never heard of it either. :|
Maybe it was a copyright trap, like that Trivial Pursuit question about Columbo's first name.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Well, I've just asked my son, a civil engineer, about this. He says "tons of people measure soil moisture. It's a major component of assessing the potential for flood or drought. Antecedent soil condition is very important for both. Farmers are also very interested in it."

Seems to me that "soil moisture" and "sogginess of the ground" are the same thing. So, yes, measuring sogginess of the ground is most definitely a thing.

Timing! Finished Fleabag on Wednesday and even made a note to remember the (hot) priest's actor. (He was also Moriarty on Sherlock).

But more amusingly, my precall for the show came early, with Carrie. It's the horribly hilarious punchline used in response to the line

At the bottom of the season pages on J! Archive, there are links to various sets of stats for the season, and Daily Doubles get their own set. https://www.j-archive.com/ddstats.php?season=37 This season there have been three $10,000 wagers (all unsuccessful), a $9,600 wager, and three $9,000 wagers.
Thank you for being gentle about the citation. Way more effective than just telling me to look up my own crap ;) I try not to outsource questions I have the simple ability to research, but I haven't dove deep in the available tools in the archive, which I will try to get familiar with. This is how you help a newbie, or a late bloomer - you told me the path, gave me the instructions, and even answered the actual question. I am surprised at my amnesia about the large wagers - they must have all come in garbage time where it was a no-brainer, much like this game. Still, I think there are 3X more instances where the contestant SHOULD have gone all in.

Rare J! typo sighting: I just rewatched this tonight and saw that the Carrie clue said "extra-excitiing." It's already archived like that, but there's no comment about it.

Thanks and I've added an erratum. The OCR presented it as shown and that is not the kind of think I'll spot on a quick proofread. It has to be an error as I cannot imagine that is any kind of hint like that double A work for the Aachen clue last week.

Category 13 wrote: Thu Apr 29, 2021 10:30 pm When second and third are tied with more than 1/2 the leader's score, wouldn't this be a situation where they each would need to go all in?

It was quite ironic that Leah was involved in this scenario, immediately after the previous game. I was eager to see how she (and Colin) would handle it, verses her first game.
In this instance Colin's wager didn't make any strategic sense. Not sure about Leah, unless she just trimmed her stay above Emily wager from 14399 to 13000. I was pretty surprised that neither bet the farm. I think Emily padded her wager based on the possibility that those two should be inclined to go all in.
That's what I was thinking too.

Though, maybe it is a little different when the tied players have more than 2/3 the leader's score, since a small bet could result in a triple stumper victory.

I wonder if the tiebreaker makes people more inclined to play for the triple stumper in these situations (while hoping their opponent bets it all), because while a double up by both trailers plus a miss by the leader (or a three-way tie offer) meant a guaranteed win before, it only means a chance at a coin flip tiebreaker today. And, I think the tiebreaker, with its agonizing wait and very high pressure, is going to have psychological effect for many, even apart from any rational percentage considerations.

But, then I found a couple of pre-tiebreaker games that had strange wagering by the tied trailers:
https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=3627, Mary $11,200- Kirsten $9,000- Robin$9,000
This stands out, since it seems to me that the reason Mary really padded her wager was probably because she assumed the trailers would both bet everything. So in stark contrast to Scott Weiss, she decided to try to maximize her own winnings. Well, it didn't quite work out, but while Kirsten bet it all, Robin kindly bet small enough (but $3,500 rather than $0) that Mary would have still lost even offering a tie, so she has no reason to regret her $11,000 wager.

There, there's this one
https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=1813, Laura $12,200- Misha $12,200-Zelda $15,800
This was a triple get. Laura bet nothing, which I guess is the most rational wager other than everything. I have no idea how Misha came up with $11,999. Did he misread his score? But, Zelda skipped the math and bet $12,300 (maybe that was as much her motivation as winning more money?). But, I had to add this one, since Zelda's victory provided a positive counterbalance to the above example.

I would love to see old board discussion of these games, if the images exist.

Maybe I'm spending too much time on this, but I just really find it interesting to see the diversity of wagers in these types of situations, when the calculator and conventional strategy seems to suggest that the only two rational wagers are all or nothing.

This one I knew for sure without even having to get into the Holzhauer games: https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=920
OMG! I had forgotten about that. My memory just isn't what it used to be.
So you keep telling us. :D

I wonder what the highest pre-FJ total is for a competitive game. Say, third place has at least two-thirds of first. Everyone's got a realistic shot with no one needing another player to over-wager or to go down the wrong path in Stratton's Dilemma.
I think I can deliver on that stat. Remind me about it.

As it turns out, the April 29, 2021 game wasn't even the record for the largest combined total for three contestants heading into FJ this season.

With $56,400, that record belongs to show #8276, aired 2020-11-09, the first show to air after Alex's death.

It's also not the record for combined pre-FJ! totals in Season 37 if you limit to "competitive" games, as Opus defines them, above. That distinction goes to show #8301, aired 2020-12-14, with $54,200.

Here is the pre-FJ! combined score data by season:

OK Robert, let me try this one which Sheri and I wondered about when we saw this game. I realize that there was a tie for second here going into FJ, but that means that you can technically say that third place had $17,200. Is that the highest total for third place going into FJ?
I used to be AWSOP but wanted to be more theatrical.

$17,200 is the record for third place going into FJ! for Season 37. It's not the record for the modern era (1984+).

Season 10 matched it with $8,600 (pre-doubled) in show #1733, aired 1992-02-26 (Teen Tournament quarterfinal game 3).

Season 12 also matched it with $8,600 (pre-doubled) in show #2710, aired 1996-05-17 (1996 Teen Tournament final game 2, in which 64 correct responses were given (with two rebounds and including a tiebreaker clue), the most "competitive" game in the modern era according to Opus's definition).

Season 13 has at least one game beating the record with $9,300 (pre-doubled) in show #2981, aired 1997-07-14.

Season 29 has at least one game beating the record with $18,000 in show #6517, aired 2013-01-08 (Ashok Poozhikunnel game 4, the most "competitive" regular play game in the modern era according to Opus's definition).

Season 33 has at least one game beating the record with $17,400 in show #7497, aired 2017-03-28.

Here's an annotated graph of the combined-scores data I provided as a table in my last post in this thread:
