The tribute for Brayden is at the end of the J! round so slow down a little on the accelerator for those that speed through their recording.

Andy won the J! round with 7000 and went into the FJ! round with 7400 without any self-inflicted wounds from DDs. He was still in position to move on if he solved the FJ! clue. That's tough to do when you don't even remember the category. Or if he did remember the category and thought Dickens was American, then that's even worse.

All those who had Veronica down for the 2nd highest Coryat of the QF round raise your hand. That's what I thought. I think she was like me and really enjoyed the boards having more fun stuff than usual. My Coryat was very happy with 15/15 on King, TV and Movie.

Sam was +7600 for the DDs so coupled with solving the FJ! clue he was in great position to make the semis. Being a winner instead of a wildcard can affect the draw so it will be interesting to see who he gets next week.

The FJ! category had me think of J! favorites Twain, Fitzgerald, Faulkner and Alcott.

The FJ! clue had me stumped. Booth (any of them) were not going to be under AMERICAN AUTHORS. Lear and the daughters is the extent of my Shakespeare knowledge I had at the ready for that work.

That left me to pick an author, any author. I did 1809 and added 30 years to get a time frame. With a shrug of the shoulders I wrote the correct guy. I still had no match to Lear, but I could not know I was wrong either so I left it for lack of anything better. It was a pleasant surprise while no great shock I was right.

The big unexpected delight was going 5/5 this week as my modest hope was 3/5 and 6/10 for the tourney. It will be a dream crushed to go 0/5 next week and I'll be quite content to end with 7/10.

For making the semis Steve was the only one to get the QF round FJ! clue correct and still miss out.

I would expect Karen, Jennifer and Veronica to appear in separate games.
Jason won't play Ryan B.
Karen won't play Nibir.
Jennifer won't play Ryan H.
Sam won't play Veronica.

Ryan B. as W1 could get Nibir and Veronica in one semi
Another one could have Karen against Jason and Ryan H.
A last semi would leave Jennifer to play Sam and Kevin.

I'm always wrong on these, so that's 3 combos to cross out.

15 down to 9: https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=7028

Only 1 TS in the DJ! round and only 4 total. Well done and especially so considering it was game 5 in a long day.

That's my extent, too. Maybe one of these day 1809 will click for me. I just guessed 'Regan' to say something.

I worked off “Edgar sounds like it could be a Lear character, Nathaniel (Hawthorne) does not”. Otherwise I only knew Lear, the Fool and the daughters.

Sam and Ryan shouldn't meet as they met in the season. If anything, it would be a possibility for the finals.

In my experience, Poe's lifespan(1809-1849) comes up in trivia far more than one would think. Right up there with Joan of Arc and King George III.

That was a very nice tribute to Brayden.

I enjoyed this board, but I thought that both DJ round DDs were pretty easy. Eurydice (in the second row) struck me as a tougher clue than Pegasus.

I was able to guess correctly on FJ from the year of birth. I didn't know that there was a King Lear character named Edgar, but it definitely seemed possible.

After a week of shows I can confidently say that Buzzy has passed Anderson Cooper as my favorite guest host so far.

I still think Buzzy is a little too loud and strident.

Edgar speaks these words: "I know thee well; a serviceable villain,
As duteous to the vices of thy mistress
As badness would desire."

(Gloucester)-- "What? Is he dead?" -

Edgar-- "Sit you down, father; rest you."
I'm smart and I want respect.

Unfortunately, I remembered I knew his birth year after the reveal. My guess was Melville.

Best I could muster was J.F. Cooper for FJ. :( At least I went 6/6 on DDs to close the week.
MarkBarrett wrote: Fri May 21, 2021 1:50 pm The tribute for Brayden is at the end of the J! round so slow down a little on the accelerator for those that speed through their recording.
Great tribute. Truly wish he could have competed again.
All those who had Veronica down for the 2nd highest Coryat of the QF round raise your hand.
I thought she'd win the game, but that was a convincing performance, no doubt. Some excellent showings out of the 4 and 5 day champs this week, fun mix in the final nine with the 19 and 8 day champs still kicking around. Should be an epic week of gameplay coming up.
Ryan B. as W1 could get Nibir and Veronica in one semi
Another one could have Karen against Jason and Ryan H.
A last semi would leave Jennifer to play Sam and Kevin.
Ryan B. and Ryan H. will also be separated. I also like to think the show would not pair Jennifer and Jason based on regular season numbers. What complicates things is that Sam is W2, and I'm not sure it's possible to separate him from W1 and W3 while keeping the women separated and preventing name issues/QF rematches. Not sure what the matchup selectors have historically prioritized here.

I spent a while on this and settled on an almost identical pairing as yours. The only change I made was swapping Nibir and Kevin.. I can also see a case for swapping Karen and Veronica if regular season wins come into the equation, but that gives you a 3W match and a 3WC match in my hypothetical.
J! S39 - 1/27-2/1. '24 ToC ???

5x TD champ - 7x TD host
