Jennifer wasted her sole solve of today's FJ! clue. 10400+2200 on DD2 after being down 27.5K going into today. I thought for sure I misheard her and that the wager was actually 10200.

Sam played a great two days making big moves, yet Jennifer had the easy potential for 22000 yesterday and 27200 for today's FJ! round which would have been more than enough to have won the tournament. Sam had the eye of the tiger in all four matches while for Jennifer it seemed like making the finals was good enough. Too bad as today could have capped an all-time ToC classic instead of having it wrapped early to allow Sam to wager 12 bucks.

The FJ! clue was a solve for me only because I had to write something. If the clue had asked for some combination of the former surrounding names I can't know whether I guess right or not.

Got FJ! on an (educated) WAG. Not sure there was really a good way to reason this out, unless you knew your pre- and post-1990 geography cold. Maybe Buzzy mentioned this, but it seems that in 1989,

Poland bordered exactly three countries: East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and the U.S.S.R.

Code: Select all

Veronica: 6400 9200 15600 24800
Jennifer: 14500 19000 33500 52500
Sam: 38000 20400 58400 78800
Sam: Bet less than $5,900, and enjoy your victory.
Jennifer: Sam has a lock, and Veronica can't catch you. Bet less than $8,700.
Veronica: You're locked into third. Bet what you want, maybe less than $1,100 in case Jennifer bets it all and misses.

Congrats to Sam.

I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Jennifer. (Or Veronica, for that matter.)

I don't have the slightest clue what she was thinking with that wager. She likely would have won had she wagered properly.

For FJ, Poland was the first thing that came to mind, so I stuck with it.

Hitting DD5 of the finals when you trail by that much is an automatic TDD bet. Sam didn’t play it safe, going for it all when he hit DD6.

Albania for me to finish an 0-5 week.

It was basically over with the math DD.

I took nearly the full 30 to come up with Poland.

I had a bad brain fart on the J! round DD, and confused Yammassoukro with Yaounde.

Both DJ round DDs were too easy.

Like others here have mentioned, I got FJ on an educated guess.

Congrats to Sam on the win! I do feel like he was the most consistent player in the tournament. And mad props to Jennifer and Veronica on their strong showings!

Yeah, Both the FJ yesterday and the Daily Double today, Jennifer bet small, I think if she doubles up on either one of those, let alone both, she likely is the champion. Or at least she forces Sam to be correct on FJ to win. Maybe he focuses more on the Final if he has to be right, and comes up with Poland, it's impossible to know, but this was a fairly tricky clue I would say with lots of ways to go wrong so if she'd put the pressure on him she may well have come out on top.

I came up with Poland and felt pretty good about it being nestled between East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Soviet Union. After looking at a map I predicted the most likely miss to be Albania, given it is nestled among former Yugoslavian countries, but it still borders Greece. Austria/Hungary are also reasonable things to consider, since they sat between Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, but of course they also border each other, and others on the East/West.

Rusty on my world map, I got stuck in the Balkans. Underwhelming tournament as far as my scoresheet is concerned.

Congrats, Sam, enjoy the 'chip and the check! Well deserved victory - just goes to show that excellent preparation and strategic acumen pay off, time and again. Greatly enjoyed the two weeks.

I agree... matter of fact, I think it's plausible that five of this tourney's alums could return in the future - the finalists, of course, as well as Jason and MacKenzie for regular play successes/fan-favorite choices.

runs: Toys & Games,
DDs: :D :D  (Avogadro). Not getting Fibonacci is just embarassing.
trash: muckrake, Spain
FJ: Misread the clue as 1900 & guessed Greece, thinking of Ottomans, Austria-Hungary, etc. :(

Judges, I said "action painting" instead of "abstract expressionism". I feel it's good, what say you?

I don't have the slightest clue what she was thinking with that wager. She likely would have won had she wagered properly.
The only theory that makes mild sense to me is that maybe she wanted to leave a few thousand on the table in case she got it wrong and happened to find the other DD, and that she hoped to make a big move there instead. But even in that case, it would've been best to go TDD right then and there when she had the chance.

Sam wryly said on Reddit that he spent a lot of time studying when his free time opened up during the onset of the pandemic. Congrats to him on making it pay off.

I WAGed Greece for FJ. I was thinking of the Balkans like Veronica apparently did.

Pulled out Poland pretty fast.

I went to Yugoslavia first and realized that there were no countries that made it up that could surround an existing country. Greece and Albania touch each other. Based on the country having to have to be surrounded. I went as far west in Europe as I could and got West/East Germany. Poland followed pretty quick.

Jennifer had to go for it on the daily double. It seemed obvious watching it. It might just be hard to do on stage.

Trailing by 23 and a half thousand. That should have been Jennifer's goal. My guess was to go 6-8k to reach that level.

Also, how common is Petersen House for the location of Lincoln's death? I got it because I was there two weeks ago.
