Don't know that I have ever watched Bravo. Had no guess on Monday.
Robespierre, Gulliver's Travels.
Given Hobbes or Leviathan, I could have given the other.

On Monday, it never even occurred to me to think of cable channels. I was stuck thinking there was some Italian-named equivalent of the Dumont Network. Fun fact, Dumont hasn't show up on Jeopardy! since 2006, and before that, not since 1995!

Have watched a few programs on Bravo, mainly Top Chef
Knew how to spell Richelieu
Did not know xylology
Knew both Leviathan and Hobbes, but probably would have put him in the 18th century without any other information

Monday I couldn't think of a single network with an Italian name and guessed Maestro to have something. I don't think I've ever watched Bravo.
Wednesday: Newspapers are a bad category; I recognized neither that was hinted at. The definition wasn't getting me anywhere and I guessed Ombudsman to have something.
Thursday, I wasn't getting Richelieu without "Cardinal" or a reference to The Three Musketeers. No idea how I would have spelled it, either. I considered Robespierre, but knew he was 18th century. I did manage a guess, but I can't remember what.

Got xylology = study of wood.
Could have named Thomas Hobbes.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

----   ----

I thought of Pilgrim's Progress on Friday, and the quote seemed like it might describe the Slough of Despond. I would have got Hobbes if they'd asked simply "he wrote Leviathan", if that's what you mean. On the other hand, that would have made a rather dull question.

Similarly, I might have got Bravo if they'd asked "from the NATO radio alphabet" or "part of Greg Brady's stage name".

My tenth grade history teacher stressed the middle syllable in Richelieu. That's apparently incorrect but it helped cement the right spelling.

I have seen "I Will Fight No More Forever" on television. Also read "The Great Chiefs", volume two of the Time-Life books "Old West" series. And Dee Brown's "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee".

I knew xylo-. That's why I used to treat canker sores with toothpicks if I was out of xylocaine.

I considered fiction, poetry, drama...I did not consider nonfiction...Another Gulliver's Travels...
I hesitated on Curaçao...
I used to like Top Chef...but still I deplore the change in the network almost as much as what happened to AMC. OK, we got Breaking Bad out of that!

I knew the clue was leading to Leviathan, but I did not know that was the actual full name of the work. I probably would have written it as a Hail Mary and had been shocked.
