Re: Wednesday, June 30, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Each time Sanjay called on S.A. I kept hearing "ese" like he was greeting a homie.
Called TS of the day: Potter's Puddle-Duck
S.A. played DD3 at DJ29 with a narrow lead of 10600 to 10200 to 9400. ARIA GRANDE when you already know it's opera could scare many a J! player and S.A. went for the house minimum. Naturally, he immediately solved it as that is how it often can go on J! Either Courtney or Abby could have gained the lead on D30, but S.A. got that one as well.
The FJ! category had me try precalls for fun and I had Gatsby, Hemingway, LotF, and Lolita along with eliminating Mockingbird due to the earlier clue.
The FJ! clue had me remember my lesson from yesterday and I started from the end of the clue, "1932 novel". I wrote the correct response and only then did I take in the rest of the clue. None of it meant anything to me as it's not as if I've read or seen any version that would have helped. Instead I was left to rely on the old "watches J! a lot". Today it worked.
Courtney has three sole solves from a 3+1+2 position pattern entering the FJ! round. I wonder if I have to remove a sock to count the instances of a J! player opening a run with three straight sole solves and likely definitely not with it coming from three different place standings. Perhaps tomorrow Courtney can be tied entering the FJ! round?
When it comes to J! it looks like a short list for 1932 novel:

Lots of last names only with no first names by Sanjay today. We don't need to hear all of them, but the game did not quite sound right today without the added host input.
Sanjay seemed to be quicker on the judging/ruling of incorrect responses, so he may have got a talking-to after yesterday's game?

Didn't have the slightest clue for this one. I probably read the book 35 years ago or so, but obviously I remember nothing from it.

The government analyst makes a willy nilly wager for an even $15000 when 1005 less would have most likely won a Triple Stumper, plus beat a zero wager from either Courtney or S.A. with a singleton. Why am I not surprised?
Re: Wednesday, June 30, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Sanjay is extremely dry IMO. Same mechanical cadence on every clue, almost no ad-lib.
FJ! is one of those times where I am familiar with the title but couldn't tell you thing one about it.

I had trouble understanding SA so I’m glad he’s not returning tomorrow. Easy FJ for me but I haven’t read Brave New World yet so maybe I’ll take it from the library next month. I took the kids to see Peter Rabbit 2 so I instantly got Jemima. I enjoyed the flyover states category. In September I’m going to Kansas for the first time. Then I’ll only have Alaska, the Dakotas, and those 4 northwestern states left.

She wore her heart on her sleeve. She played a pretty good game until missing that easy DD.

39R. 2/4 on big clues. Tough categories and game for me today. Missed Des Moines and guessed Topeka. Got ectogenesis and endometriosis mixed up and went in a totally wrong direction. Guessed To Kill a Mockingbird just to write something down.
Best of luck to Courtney for breaking the curse. I had some doubts earlier today after I realized that her two sole solves on Monday and Tuesday were basically in the same category, and sure enough she is in the history department at the college she teaches at. Glad to see she made it another day. I'm rooting for anybody who can win more games.
I noticed a faster pace compared to yesterday. Went from about as slow as it gets to faster than it's been in a while.
Some clues that I missed that I want to get next time are Jemima, Kennedy Center, Andover, Anna Wintout, and Singleton.

Re: Wednesday, June 30, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Pretty smooth game from me tonight so long as we ignore the inevitable low-get rate in the MAGAZINES category (today was a 2, as I got BHaG and Anna Wintour) My only hiccups were missing Kandahar, and not recognizing any of the cities of Iowa mentioned in DD2, nor having any clue that there was Des Moines River.
I asked for a gimme for a FJ after missing the first 2 this week, and I got what was as close to an instaget as I could hope for. I pray this starts a trend in the right direction.
I think Courtney has a really good trivia mind, probably ToC level, but she seems to struggle in terms of buzzer speed and a lack of strategy. She too often picks top row clues when it just doesn't behoove her to do so. She had the lowest Coryat of the 3 today, but she had the least amount wrong and got the most important wagering clue of the match. I think if she can somehow get a little quicker on the trigger and muster the gusto to go for bigger-value clues earlier in each round, we'll see her for 3+ more games.

DD: Cities along this river that shares its name with a state capital include Ottumwa & Fort Dodge
I could probably pin the towns to Iowa from faint name recognition if I had time to rule out 20 other options. But TIL that Des Moines is the name of a river. I had no idea, and Iowa even borders Missouri (PSA: MO and TN have the most borders with other states with 8 each) so it's not like it's a famous river. Maybe this would poll at 80%, but I don't consider it "easy".
I thought this was one of the more interesting games in a couple of weeks with 3 likable (if quirky) contestants.
I know what an ectopic pregnancy is, but NHO ectogenesis and am not sure how it inspired interest and curiosity in the 30's. Brave New World and Animal Farm were trendy among the literati when I was in College but I kept my ignorance the best I could. Not a big fan of allegories or dystopia.
I think that Gupta is doing fine, but I am suffering from Guest Host fatigue syndrome.

Enh. It's better than his The Doors of Perception, but I wouldn't make a point of reading it.
Assuming you mean WA, OR, ID and MT, you're saving the best for last, eh? Alaska was my 50th after I drove I-70 for part of a trip from Boston to Eugene, OR so I could knock off Missouri and Kansas.
Poll request for the Des Moines DD. I'll be surprised if it tops 50%--no way it gets to 80%.twelvefootboy wrote: ↑Thu Jul 01, 2021 12:02 amEasy?

I also tried Topeka, no doubt muddling Fort Dodge and Dodge City.
Yeah, I don't imagine a lot of champs get the sole FJ solve in their first three wins or come third in Coryat for two of them. Courtney's coming up big when it counts so far--at different points in this match I thought both Abby and S.A. looked very strong.
In and out of the pool four times
