Re: Friday, July 9, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Today's game was an accent-off between Tom & Kathryn and it may be a draw, or drawl.
Dang, I missed the Nancy Drew clue since as a quote I had to have it exact. My response was "amateur sleuth" which did not fit with the "a", but even if I had picked up on that I still would have missed with "sleuth".
Good thing Kathryn does not have acrophobia since there were several shots showing how high she was on the equalizing platform. She had the lead for the FJ! round, so not affected by the lift.
Unlike Jen, I solved DD1. Was the Earl in a cartoon? Perhaps one with Sherman & Mr. Peabody? I have an inkling of learning about the guy prior to Trebek's J! version beginning.
The FJ! clue had me solve it right off "Canada" as the first author that occurred to me was the correct one. 1985 only gave me more assurance I was correct as I wrote the work and only after I was done did I realize how 14th century locked it in even better. During think time I added the correct leading article, unlike Jen who had the wrong one.
Sanjay clearly spelled out the why Jen was correct and probably her being a repeat champ with big bucks may cool some of the heat when typically social media will go off on such things. If Tom had won with the same scenario then I suspect the outrage factor would go steeper.
During think time my thought was, "Let's see if Jen can pull a Courtney" as I knew she would need some combination of fortunate factors to prevail. Sole get for the win from third. Not unfamiliar lately.
Anyone have a guess at Kathryn's FJ! response?
$231,059 for the charity and the end of 2-week totals.
George Stephanopoulos on Monday for just five games.

Canterbury was the only 14th century work that came to mind and it led to a quick solve.

Not sure whether it helped me or not that there was a piece on NPR's Marketplace last night about pilgrimages of the post-Black-Death era (relating them to an expected present-day postpandemic spending spree, "revenge spending" as it's called) that quoted the Canterbury Tales.

I figured it The Canterbury Tales it was based on, but that's as far as I got.

The Canterbury Tales, no more.
Good call to null on asymmetrical.
Also, nothing on Gloucester

I did get FJ correct...but I'm pretty sure, with the way things go in my life, that if I had responded "A Handmaid's Tale", I would have been counted incorrect.
Re: Friday, July 9, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I know there is something called The Handmaid's Tale, but couldn't tell you what. i seem to have this habit of only knowing names and nothing more.

I had a question similar to the a vs the thing. In Jeopardy round, " David Jack, a big landowner in this California town..." The accepted answer was Monterrey Jack. The question wasn't asking for the cheese, it was asking for the town. In the past, haven't they been more specific about requiring answers in the right format?

40R. 3/4 on big clues. Missed Neon and guessed Argon. Approached the clue from "which noble gas is Greek" instead of "which noble gas means new" and got distracted by the Argonauts. Missed a FJ clue in the archive either yesterday or today that asked for the literary work originally called The Chronic Argonauts. That was The Time Machine. I saw some of the TV series The Handmaid's Tale but had to stop watching when Offred was on the verge of escape but then decided to go back. Probably should have turned it off before that.
Missed electrolysis and said hydrolysis. Oops.
Some clues that I missed that I want to get next time are (District) 12, hamantashen, Hairspray (Good Morning, Baltimore), ombre, and (reticulated) python.
I thought Sanjay Gupta was excellent. Alex always had dignity and integrity and I felt that way with Sanjay also. He also got out of the way and made the show about the contestants.

I had a dream that I was asleep and then I woke up and Jeopardy! was on.

Did they change the rule? I thought having the wrong initial article did matter.

Is there another best-selling Canadian author that will show up on J!? Mordecai Richler doesn't make it and they've never asked for Robertson Davies' name, and Saul Bellow was only born in Canada...I think including the country made the clue too easy... Though I admit I drew a blank on the title at first - realizing the other work referenced was The Canterbury Tales helped to bring it to mind.
