Re: Monday, July 19, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Robin definitely raised the energy level from George's style. The players seemed to respond to it to play a pretty good game. Robin did have some, "You got it!" affirmations that may have been a bit too enthusiastic for a regular clue.
Josh converted DD2 & DD3 to have a healthy lead for the FJ! round, but was shy of the lock by the end of the round.
Robin at the conclusion of the round sounded like Alex: It is not a runaway.
The FJ! category had me do my typical reminders such as don't forget biggie NY and always check on Hi & AK.
The FJ! clue had me figuring out the likely states (once I assured myself that Catalina was out) and from there it was pick the right islands. I matched Josh for the correct response.
Josh is 4/4 on DDs and 1/2 on FJ! clues in two wins. He seems to kind of play DDs by ear and we'll see what the scoreboard calls for tomorrow if he finds any.

Best I could do was "Hawaii and some Alaskan island".

I sincerely hope I'm the only one who suffered this fate: Poll request for "I got Kodiak but totally missed Hawai'i on my mental map" I'll be kicking myself on this one.. took a good ten-fifteen seconds to parse the clue, which unfortunately cost me.
Congrats to Josh for a second excellent performance.

runs:. Agree 2 Disagree, Time of War, Names in the Dictionary, Prague
DDs:.
trash:. Ishmael DD, Commerce, romanticism, Victoria Cross (4800)
FJ:. What is Hawaii (the big island) & Kodiak?
Worked the 2K census (in payroll), no way I'm missing Commerce.

A good start for Robin, I thought. Josh looks like the real deal to me. He’s fast but certain on his gets. FJ took me a while but the right two islands emerged with plenty of Think Music remaining.

Yes, there will be a poll choice for getting K, though not H and the other way around as is typical for this kind of 2-part FJ! clue. I'll have another choice for having the wrong Hawaiian island in the mix.threearruda wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 8:09 pm I sincerely hope I'm the only one who suffered this fate: Poll request for "I got Kodiak but totally missed Hawai'i on my mental map" I'll be kicking myself on this one.. took a good ten-fifteen seconds to parse the clue, which unfortunately cost me.

Re: Monday, July 19, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The answer to Olivier Award Winners for $1600 was the first time that word was used on the show since the manufactroversy of late April. J-Archive gives nearly 150 results for the singular, and 40 for the plural. Hmm...
In a random sampling of contestants, FJ might be a triple stumper 4 times out of 5. I think a majority would get the Big Island, but Kodiak is lesser-known, sparsely populated, and rarely visited.
Robin had an excellent first episode.

Hoping for a third lap

good FJ question.
IMO, Wenceslas is a harder grab than Kafka or Holy Roman Empire.

Not when you're spotted "Good King" and Christmas.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

42R. 4/4 on big clues. Said Isaac first but immediately corrected myself and said Ishmael. Knew the two islands right away.
Tough J round for me but then a strong DJ round.
Some bad misses for me. Said Family "Trees" instead of "Secrets." Said Frankfurter instead of Vienna. Said Lima Beans instead of Brazil Nuts. I'm going to schedule an appointment with the eye doctor soon. In the meantime I'll just make my horn louder.
I liked the CABINET DEPARTMENT category. Seems like good knowledge that should be more common.
Some clues that I missed that I want to get next time are This American Life, Iacocca, Commerce, Stendhal, and buffa. I should make a note for that last one not to get it confused with Commedia dell'arte.

A frustrating FJ. The Big Island was obvious...For Alaska, the Aleutians loomed large, but of course they are plural...I knew
Pribilof is an Alaska name. Kodiak didn't come, so I wrote Pribiloff...Alas, they are plural too...

FYI, average daily mean temperature in January is 30.5 degrees F in Kodiak and 71.4 in Hilo per Wikipedia.

Re: Monday, July 19, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I worked it in 2010, in quality assurance. I said "Interior". I did think of Agriculture on the food safety question, which was good because I haven't fully updated "HEW" in my head.
"Renegades" does sort of mean "rebels", but it's usually the bad kind. What other people call you, not what you call yourselves. Anyway, I'll consider "Podcasts" payback for "20th Century TV" shortly ago. And I'd totally have gone with Ira Glass on that Morning Edition clue.
I found the "woolly" clue self-descriptive. I'd have written it to ask for rhino instead.
I didn't know how to choose between Attu and Atka, and Adak skipped my mind altogether. So I went with Kodiak, because big bears probably need a big island.
Natchez does have a French look, and I see that there actually is a village by that name within Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. But it's not particularly near the one in Mississippi.
By the way, I always liked this Ogden Nash limerick:
There was a young belle of old Natchez
Whose garments were always in patchez.
When comment arose
On the state of her clothes
She, drawled, "When ah itchez, ah scratchez."
I think that's the way I remember first reading it. I was appalled just now by the many butchered versions people have seen fit to post online, but I'd be apoplectic only if I were the keeper of the Nash legacy.
ETA--oh, and I don't see why "international" should suggest "Canadian".
I'm smart and I want respect.

Obscure hint on Obama's podcast: Renegade was his Secret Service code name.
FJ, I gave up completely on coming up with an Alaskan island and went with Vashon to go with Hawai`i.

Re: Monday, July 19, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
By the way, Hawaii and Kodiak are the two largest U.S. islands even if the "50 states" qualifier is removed. Puerto Rico is slightly smaller than Kodiak (3,588 sq mi to 3,363).
