I also saw it (Alien) recently and thought of it immediately tonight.

Sigourney Weaver was pretty terrific, by the way.

I recommend the Studio Ghibli animated adaptation from about 10 years ago, "The Secret World of Arrietty." (It's available on HBO Max.)

"Dan O'Bannon" was all I needed for this one. Don't know why I've read the Wiki page for the movie so many times, but at least it's made his and H.R. Geiger's names tattooed in my memory.

Matt looks quite impressive, but I can’t say that I get much Alex Jacob vibe. Matt has flattened affect whereas I never got that from Alex but YMMV. Both are fun players to watch, though, and the comparison is high praise to me as I regard Alex, along with Matt Jackson and James Holzauer, as one of the top players of recent memory. I thought FJ was pretty straightforward and film is certainly no strength of mine, which perhaps helped.

He also has an interesting affectation of answering with "What" or "What's" each time, no matter whether the response is a person, place, or thing. I can only surmise he does that so he has one less thing to think about up there.
Definitely. Got Alien early, didn't think of The Exorcist, but I think it's a decent guess.

I have a young nephew with Crohn’s and it’s a miserable affliction. I also saw Alien early on so this was an instaget. Matt is impressive. In re Krishna v. Krishnan, was Matt wrong because neither fit the clue or was Krishna an alternative correct answer. Host didn’t explain it. I felt bad for the guy on the end. I also forgot the category in re Howard the Duck.

I suspect that the post-doubling portion is a comprehensive list of players who cleared $80,000 in their first two games. Correct me if I'm wrong (and feel free to add other pre-doubling folks who cleared $40k in their first two games if you know of any). [...]

We've had this type of discussion in a thread a few years ago, and like I said then, the after FJ scores aren't the best comparison as betting is often a product of a game situation (opponents scores, when DDs are found, etc.).

The best apples to apples comparison is average coryat score of the first five games, with those who played prior to the doubling getting their scores doubled.

Nobody was comparing anyone. Breaking $80k in two games (or $40k in two pre-doubling games) is simply a rare occurrence, and doing so with over $40k in each game (or over $20k in pre-doubled games, which nobody named so far actually did) is even rarer, and I wanted to put together names and final scores to see if there were any others prior to Matt besides Mark Runsvold who did the rarer feat. (Larissa's, Roger's, and Chris's sub-$40k games could have gone above without risking their locks, and James was already overwagering to cover second by betting $9,812, so he could have done it too by commemorating something that happened at least a month and a day later in its respective year.)

(Thanks for the additions, cheezguyty)

The clue is certainly easier when paying attention to the category which DD time allows enough of a pause to do it.
Tony's father's name was Howard. I would bet she didn't know that, though.

I said Alien as a joke, figuring if I couldn't be right I could at least be funny.
I actually said Howard Stark, even though I’ve never seen it.

Never seen Alien and had no FJ guess.

In second place in this game, I’d bet it all in FJ. There is no worry about third place and doubling up gives you a chance in case the leader makes a math error, such as adding a dollar instead of subtracting.

Yep. I could have answered this one correctly if all they had given me was "Dan O'Bannon." They rest of the clue was good for a chuckle, though.

I'm one of those who sit through the credits in the theater and watch the special features on the DVD. "Writer Dan O'Bannon" was all it took.

I would have needed more than "writer Dan O'Bannon" because that wouldn't have been enough to eliminate Dark Star

True. But I didn't think Jeopardy would go into Pinback and the Ball Burster. Oh, wait, it wasn't the beach ball that exploded .......

I had a flashback to Ken Jennings's first game and "who is Jones" with Matt's answer of "what is Johnson" for the restaurant chain question. Robin paused briefly before adjudicating,, in which time matt was able to be more specific. I suspect he would have been all right in Final Jeopardy too given that both the category and the clue spotted the name Howard.

I pre called that Pete would ring in and mispronounce LASIK.

I had to laugh at myself after my answer of Sheila on the Roe James clue. Tommy Roe's big hit was Sheila and Sheila James played Zelda Gilroy on Dobie Gillis and went on to become a California state legislator
