I also saw it (Alien) recently and thought of it immediately tonight.
Sigourney Weaver was pretty terrific, by the way.

I recommend the Studio Ghibli animated adaptation from about 10 years ago, "The Secret World of Arrietty." (It's available on HBO Max.)MattKnowles wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 12:08 am Some clues that I missed that I want to get next time are The Borrowers...

"Dan O'Bannon" was all I needed for this one. Don't know why I've read the Wiki page for the movie so many times, but at least it's made his and H.R. Geiger's names tattooed in my memory.
Definitely. Got Alien early, didn't think of The Exorcist, but I think it's a decent guess.alietr wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 9:01 pm Matt is getting his PhD in AI. Presumably why he was hunting in the likeliest spots. He also has an interesting affectation of answering with "What" or "What's" each time, no matter whether the response is a person, place, or thing. I can only surmise he does that so he has one less thing to think about up there.
Here are two more:seaborgium wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 11:29 pm First two games:
- Garrett Simpson: $18,300 + $25,500 (pre-doubling)
- Bob Blake: $13,000 + $27,800 (pre-doubling)
- Mark Born: $14,999 + $29,400 (pre-doubling)
- Jerome Vered: $24,000 + $16,401 (pre-doubling)
- Matt Handel: $23,400 + $17,001 (pre-doubling)
- Karl Coryat: $16,300 + $26,100 (pre-doubling)
- John Skelton: $10,000 + $31,000 (pre-doubling)
- Doug Lach: $15,900 + $32,600 (pre-doubling)
- Larissa Kelly: $45,200 + $35,400
- Roger Craig: $37,000 + $77,000
- Mark Runsvold: $48,000 + $55,000
- Chris Fleitas: $38,900 + $44,001
- James Holzhauer: $43,680 + $38,926
- Matt Amodio: $40,400 + $41,000
I suspect that the post-doubling portion is a comprehensive list of players who cleared $80,000 in their first two games. Correct me if I'm wrong (and feel free to add other pre-doubling folks who cleared $40k in their first two games if you know of any). [...]

Nobody was comparing anyone. Breaking $80k in two games (or $40k in two pre-doubling games) is simply a rare occurrence, and doing so with over $40k in each game (or over $20k in pre-doubled games, which nobody named so far actually did) is even rarer, and I wanted to put together names and final scores to see if there were any others prior to Matt besides Mark Runsvold who did the rarer feat. (Larissa's, Roger's, and Chris's sub-$40k games could have gone above without risking their locks, and James was already overwagering to cover second by betting $9,812, so he could have done it too by commemorating something that happened at least a month and a day later in its respective year.)triviawayne wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 1:58 pmcheezguyty wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 10:57 amHere are two more:seaborgium wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 11:29 pm First two games:

We've had this type of discussion in a thread a few years ago, and like I said then, the after FJ scores aren't the best comparison as betting is often a product of a game situation (opponents scores, when DDs are found, etc.).
The best apples to apples comparison is average coryat score of the first five games, with those who played prior to the doubling getting their scores doubled.
I actually said Howard Stark, even though I’ve never seen it.Plactus wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 6:15 pmTony's father's name was Howard. I wonder if she forgot it was HOWARD'S END or if she just threw out a guess to have something? The clue is certainly easier when paying attention to the category which DD time allows enough of a pause to do it.
I said Alien as a joke, figuring if I couldn't be right I could at least be funny.
I'm one of those who sit through the credits in the theater and watch the special features on the DVD. "Writer Dan O'Bannon" was all it took.
True. But I didn't think Jeopardy would go into Pinback and the Ball Burster. Oh, wait, it wasn't the beach ball that exploded .......Foretopman wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 8:27 pmI would have needed more than "writer Dan O'Bannon" because that wouldn't have been enough to eliminate Dark Star
