Good idea, although last name only would have worked too. (Gwendolyn)

edit: since my correction is on a new page, I predict someone else will offer one as well.

Matt would have dominated this game even without one DD. His challengers had no chance from the start. He is well within range of catching James in games. Beyond that, well - we’ll be seeing a lot of Matt if he challenges those records.

Check to see if the End of the World occurs today, after John Boy came up with a correct response on FJ with a rock music category. OK, it was a semi-educated guess and no more, but a get is a get.

I for one don't care much for win streaks that seem to go on forever. I much prefer seeing competitive games, and there hasn't been much of that in recent weeks. My hat is off to Matt, but I hope to see someone else win pretty soon.

I would have said Clapton for FJ. I'm thinking that's not too far off base, is it?

Clapton came to prominence in the 60s.

His first solo album was 1970; last was 2018. I also think he fails the top 5 charting requirement of the clue. But I would say this is a good guess.

The FJ clue is technically incorrect, although Billboard recognizes decades incorrectly (as do most people).

There was no year zero. When Christ was born, the first year was 1AD. Thus, a decade goes from xxx1-xxx0, not from xxx0-xxx9. Similarly, a century goes from xx01-xx00, not from xx00-xx99, as the contestants in game 2 of season 1 - the second game of the Trebek revival in 1984 - all discovered to their dismay, as they all bet everything in FJ for a three-player washout. The 1900s isn't a century; the century went from 1901-2000.

Thus, although cultural references generally posit that a decade goes from xxx0-xxx9 (the 80s, the 90s, and so on), that is wrong, and the album in 2020 did not give The Boss Top 5 albums in six consecutive decades.

So I guess the year actually begins on December 25th?

Seriously, a decade is any arbitrary period of ten years. Generally, we call decades names like 'the 1940s' or 'the Eighties'. By that common usage, decades would run from year xxx0 to xxx9, unless you're seriously proposing that the last year of the 2020s will be 2030.

Your example of centuries is more correct, in that we typically call centuries by ordinal names: 'the 1st century BCE', 'the twenty-first century'. Using that nomenclature, then yes, the first year of the century is xxx1.

If you really want to get persnickety, you could argue that Springsteen has had top-5 records in six consecutive decades (66-75; 76-85; 86-95; 96-05; 06-15; 16-25), but that didn't happen in 2020, but in 2019 when Western Stars hit #2.

Is there any context in which people refer to the years from, say, 2021 to 2030 as the 2030th decade? [ ...That should be 203rd decade, of course.] Seems to me "cultural references" are the only ones that matter here.

I strongly believe that the 21st century is from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2100, but I just as strongly believe that the 2020's run from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2029. I don't think that causes any contradiction.

Any period of ten years can be called a decade, and when a clue says that an occurrence in a year ending with a zero has added to the number of consecutive decades it has occurred, it's a safe assumption that the clue's reckoning of decades lines up with when the year changes its tens digit.

The real trouble brews when a clue refers to "the last x consecutive decades," since an honest case can be made that you find those by counting backwards from the present by ten-year increments. This happened with an FJ in 2006 that resulted in the two losing players being brought back in later games; their incorrect response was correct under that interpretation.

No, but only mostly because the years from 20291 to 20300 would be the 2030th decade!

There's a road near where I live called Gravois, pronounced GRA-voy. I always thought that either GRA-voys or gra-VWAH would make more sense.
Illinois does as well. Des Plaines (Des pronounced to rhyme with less and not like in Des Moines) and San Jose (pronounced San Josie (but without the Pussycats :-) )).
