Re: Wednesday, November 17, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Another stumper to make Ken feel old with no one getting the Phoenix Grammy winner.
Andrew did all he could with DD3 though not nearly enough for the needed lock. Amy could have had 5600 more for the FJ! round thanks to solving DD2 though it still would have been a trailing position.
The FJ! category had me struggling for precalls and I only had Longfellow/Poets' Corner. Even that was wrong as the poet is buried in MA and it's only a bust across the pond.
The FJ! clue had me messed up from the start as working from the first Treasury Sec. had me thinking Caribbean. Born is not the same as buried. I wrote Jamaica to have something and thought perhaps Fulton tried out some ships in the Caribbean.
Knowing I was very likely wrong I kept thinking throughout the 30 seconds and wondered about Canada for Fulton. Switching to PEI made no sense. Next I thought about the duel, but had no islands to match to NJ.
Amy's response finally let me know how silly I had been over the whole thing and working way too hard. Duh, of course. East Coast bias and already over it.
It might be a little more difficult for Andrew to laugh it off since he had so many skills that could have lent themselves to a longer run.
Nice work by Amy to win the Coryat race as well as the whole game with the sole solve.

For some reason, I thought of Fulton as having invented the ferry instead of the steamboat, and connected ferry -> Staten Island.

Wow, it's almost like the writers are actively conspiring against me getting a single FJ! right in November...

I have actually been to that cemetery and saw Fulton and Hamilton. But I didn’t know Manhattan is an island and said Staten Island.
Good job by Amy to rally after Andrew’s TDD and make it reasonably close going into FJ.

Information for when it comes time to speculate as to who's going to face off against who in the quarterfinals: Brian Chang posted on Reddit that he knew Andrew in college, so presumably they would not face off in the semifinals. There are already a number of potential scheduling "conflicts" that the show is likely to work around, such as Brian and Zach Newkirk having played; Jonathan and Matt having played, and Jonathan and Tyler having taped in the same week.

I was kinda rooting for Amy, as she used to host a podcast I listened to. That was a really well-played game.
I skipped the obvious and went to my birthplace of Long Island.

Well played game, congrats to Andrew and Amy.
Had nothing better than Ellis or Long Island for FJ. At least I got the right geographic area.

You've got quite a streak going! May as well lean into it at this point! But no more cheating. You have to actually guess and risk being right for the rest of the month.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 5:41 pm Wow, it's almost like the writers are actively conspiring against me getting a single FJ! right in November...

on big clues. Matched Andrew with Ellis Island. Figured the land developers would've gotten rid of any Manhattan cemeteries.
Groaned when Amy went top shelf on Italian. Max showed her how it was done, finding the DD, then clanking La Tarantella.

I have been in Trinity Church cemetery more than once, and go past it all the time. I have seen Hamilton's grave. And still when he came to mind I thought of the Caribbean... I don't remember knowing that Fulton was buried there. I spent way too much time thinking about him. I did not think about Manhattan as an island...I found this a tough game all the way through and the FJ didn't get better...

Jonathan and Tyler wouldn't be an issue. The 2009 ToC had Cora Peck against Dan Pawson and Tom Morris against Larissa Kelly in the quarterfinals, two pairings where the latter player was in the game directly after the former lost during the same taping.Ironhorse wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 6:48 pm Information for when it comes time to speculate as to who's going to face off against who in the quarterfinals: Brian Chang posted on Reddit that he knew Andrew in college, so presumably they would not face off in the semifinals.
