I didn't know the Niven one, but that Steve Martin line was unforgettable.reddpen wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 3:51 pm Did that category strike you as exceedingly difficult though? I knew the 400, 1200 and 2000 clues cold--then again, I saw the Letterman one on TV (it was excruciating to watch him keep flogging the same joke). The Hope line is pretty well known, and Niven's ad lib might be the best known in Oscar history.

For me it's the opposite. I may have gotten the Steve Martin one in 2005 because it was recent, but it seems past its sell-by to me now. (I'm not even sure I get it... ) The streaker and the Niven remark are shown whenever Oscar history comes up. It also had the advantage of being spontaneous.Robert K S wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 4:13 pmI didn't know the Niven one, but that Steve Martin line was unforgettable.reddpen wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 3:51 pm Did that category strike you as exceedingly difficult though? Here's the acceptance speech that immediately preceded Martin's (hastily scripted?) "ad-lib".

What does "TD" stand for? I looked around for a while, but couldn't find any explanation of it. Thanks!Peachbox wrote: ↑Tue Nov 23, 2021 11:02 pm Only knew it because of research for a previous TD. See Question 3.

I knew it was Steve Martin from reading that clue today because I remembered something in a Bathroom Reader about a crack team of writers behind the scenes coming up with that line for Steve Martin.Robert K S wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 4:58 pmHere's the acceptance speech that immediately preceded Martin's (hastily scripted?) Went to Ottawa on a family vacation in 2006, and if I recall correctly, we went for a walk in the city one day which included crossing over the canal. This was in spring, so no skaters, but still, nice of the writers to give a layup to the Canadian viewers. The more I think about it, the less surprised I am to see boardies here struggle with it. I'm not sure how well known it is outside of Canada.

To me, skating on canals = Hans Brinker (Dutch), and in my mind I could just hear Swedish Chef saying, "Vinter-ludə," so I stayed in Europe with Amsterdam and Stockholm. Picked Stockholm because Amsterdam seemed too obvious. Wasn't familiar with the festival. Or Ottawa canals.Robert K S wrote: ↑Tue Nov 23, 2021 1:39 pm "Cold + French + world capital" should lead to a WECIB response. Going there in the late winter (March) was the coldest I have ever been.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

Well, "Rideau" isn't only the name of the canal in Ottawa. There is also the Rideau River and the Rideau Falls. Oh, and the Governor General's residence, Rideau Hall...The Talking Mime wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 6:34 pm Went to Ottawa on a family vacation in 2006, and if I recall correctly, we went for a walk in the city one day which included crossing over the canal. Ottawa instaget. I could have gotten Ford just from president born in Omaha. They gave the whole name and they still didn't get it?
