I considered Brussels and almost went with it. But Amsterdam seemed better for canals and ice skating and Hans Brinker and everything. I did choose Amsterdam over Brussels despite the French name rather than because of it. Still, it's not implausible that the Huguenots got to name a canal or two. I did not think of Ottawa at all. If I had, I doubt I'd have gone with it.Golf wrote: ↑Tue Nov 23, 2021 10:28 pm Any game where Gerald Ford is a TS when given Leslie King Jr. does not deserve a winner.
Do not understand the love for Amsterdam in FJ given the French word in the clue. Brussels would seem to be a better wrong answer as at least French is widely spoken there.

I think the answer is less than they used to, but they still do frequently. IIRC, they have a very long skating race on the canals each year, but it's been getting harder to have a course since all the canals don't freeze over anymore. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 12:15 am I thought Amsterdam would be pretty iffy, but stuck with it just because of the canal association. Winterlude is a truly great experience. I hate winter, I love Winterlude. come visit! next year! you can skate to work with me and we can literally eat maple syrup candy and poutine on the canal. It's a stereotype come to life.

Another Amsterdam here. It's North America bias, but it's hard for me to think of Canada while running through world capitals for a clue like this.

For the future, other than the Singel, pretty much every major canal in Amsterdam ends in either -gracht or -burgwal.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 5:42 am I considered Brussels and almost went with it. That's an interesting example. I tried to see if the name might have come by way of France, but can't find any evidence of that. I did learn that many Romanian -escus who emigrated to France changed their surname to -esco.
As for "Seau", it seems to me that there's close to a 100% chance it's either flat-out the French surname or it's otherwise the result of French influence on Samoa.

Omaha, four of five were triple stumpers. FWIW, I was correct on the bottom two boxes, had no clue on the top 3, stupidly guessing Mississippi for the river. I was amazed Leslie King was a S&S.
Has there ever been a category that had five of five TS's? (I mean truly 5 of 5, all revealed during play with 5 whiffs)

Did that category strike you as exceedingly difficult though? I knew the 400, 1200 and 2000 clues cold--then again, I saw the Letterman one on TV (it was excruciating to watch him keep flogging the same joke). The Hope line is pretty well known, and Niven's ad lib might be the best known in Oscar history.DBear wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 3:23 pmThat was the UTOC, where already difficult categories were turned up to 11.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Nov 24, 2021 1:57 pm Another one for the rough category list is the 2nd one in DJ! here: https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=163
