Re: Monday, December 6, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
New opening with generic academic images.
The introductions were three-part on-screen displays of name, job and college and it seemed quite strange to see them again during chats.
Ouch if Jackie Fuchs is watching today.
Gary cruised to a spot in the semis with missing the FJ! clue a minor bump in the road.
The FJ! clue had me needing a few seconds to recall then swat away Gary's incorrect response and after that I demonstrated I could spell a little better (at least in this one particular case) than Hester.
It's a tournament and it goes 10 games. We know the drill. Regular play will return soon enough.

Did you swat it in my direction? I matched Gary's response.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Dec 06, 2021 1:46 pm

Not a bad start, although my expectations were low as mentioned last week.
The clues played easier than a regular game. DDs were confidence boosters.
Good enough to lose on Jeopardy!

Re: Monday, December 6, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
After a parade of super-champs this season, this was a bit of a letdown.
At least Gautam went for it in his FJ bet. Hester’s score might not hold up while $5,200 definitely wouldn’t. Anything Gary bet that was under $3,800 was a smart bet.
The Home Alone clue in the Wonderful Life category was strange. In honor of the host (not the person hosting), they should have answered for the person who played Nick the bartender.
No chance for me on FJ. Said Dadaism just to have something.

A little Dutch/German knowledge went a long way in solving this FJ.

For the GIRL GROUPS I did a combination of mental coin tosses, Wikipedia, archive history and mental darts on a dartboard to decide whether to The or not to The. It's gets annoying trying to always get it right and keep it consistent for music acts.

Good one and ridiculous of the writers to go that route for one clue and I did not care for $200 either. It should not be that hard to write five clues specific to the movie itself. I wanted a pic of Alfalfa from the swimming pool scene, "Buffalo Gals", Clarence, "Hark... Angels...", "Auld Lang Syne" Bert & Ernie...

The public domain clue didn’t bother me as it is an interesting bit of trivia of how it became a national phenomenon.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Dec 06, 2021 3:29 pmGood one and ridiculous of the writers to go that route for one clue and I did not care for $200 either. Re: Monday, December 6, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I felt like Mayim overexplained the "Post Doctoral" category. She said, "Responses start with 'D-O' and come after 'doctoral' alphabetically." We've seen a lot of "Post [blank]," "Pre [blank]," "Before [blank]," and "After [blank]" categories on Jeopardy! I recall Alex explaining those categories this way: "Each response appears somewhere shortly before/after [blank] in the dictionary." Mayim I thought was too specific by pointing out that every response starts with "D-O." I don't think Alex would've done that. Maybe that's nitpicking, but to me this made the category easier than it should have been. (I don't even know if Mayim is allowed to ad-lib her own explanation or if the writers give the host a script or what, but it sounded to me like she was free to describe it in her own words.)
FJ: I almost had it. I spent too much time trying to remember what the "kunstler" in kunstlerroman meant. As soon as I finished writing "Art Deco," I knew the correct response was "Art Nouveau," but it was too late to switch. Drat.

My lucky numbers are 6, 66, and 666.

The only Dutch word I know is "stroopwafel", so that was of no help here.
I spent the entire 30 seconds trying to pull the term "art deco" from the recesses of my brain, only for that to be the wrong thing anyway.

(and to be fair, you know a lot of Dutch words -- you just don't realize that they are: arm, glass, hand, is, stop, water and many more! )

Not Dutch, but fun fact: "My hand is in warm water" is spelled exactly the same and means the same thing in English and Afrikaans.econgator wrote: ↑Mon Dec 06, 2021 7:43 pmIt's a good one to know!TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Dec 06, 2021 7:32 pm The only Dutch word I know is "stroopwafel", so that was of no help here.

Re: Monday, December 6, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I think they were just being mindful of the non-regulars who might be tuning in. Same reason they flashed "automatic semi-finalist" or something like that over Gary at the end. That wasn't for us long haulers.tddeveryday wrote: ↑Mon Dec 06, 2021 6:02 pm I felt like Mayim overexplained the "Post Doctoral" category.
