Bob cruised his way to the finals in his QF and SF games. What a huge differential in the leading score to the trailers for a SF match.

Easy FJ! clue in 2020 and I was happy to see I also got it in 1991.

No corrections.

Just seeing COLE PORTER LYRICS made me happy. That man was a genius both as a lyricist and as a composer. What he does in combining the two is just astounding. E.g. from "I Get a Kick Out of You":

I get no kick from cocaine.
I'm sure that if
I took even one sniff
It would bore me terrif-
ically too
But I get a kick out of you

I broke it up into those lines to emphasize that genius rhyme between if and sniff and the second syllable of terrifically. When a singer holds on to that "rif" for just the right amount of time before letting the song continue, it's just magic.

Our Seniors did not disappoint in this category, scooping all of them up. I missed one.

"From This Moment On". It's from Kiss Me Kate. Not my favorite Porter and offhand I only recall "It's Too Darn Hot", "Wunderbar", and "Brush Up Your Shakespeare". As a whole Kiss Me Kate always seemed overdone and stuffy to me. The music lacked Porter's usual lightness and, perhaps because of that, the lyrics didn't seem to come spontaneously off the singers' tongues as though they'd just that moment thought of these incredibly witty turns of phrase. Just listened to "From This Moment On" on YouTube and... yeah. My opinion stands.

That completes the 1991 Seniors Tournament as F2 was already in the archive.

A 2020 miss on the FJ! clue while my scoresheet indicates I got it right 29 years ago.

It was almost like the tournament had two winners with Bob also exceeding the winner's guarantee though only Lou got the bonus invite to return of course.

Spelling test on J15 HANDICRAFTS $100: French for "chewed paper", it's the art of figure-molding using shredded paper & glue

I wonder if my response would have netted me a reversal for J30 HANDICRAFTS $500: Usually sold in slabs, it's the preferred wax for candlemaking

Paraffin. I said beeswax. The internet tells me beeswax does get sold in slabs, though I can't vouch for the "usually". And "preferred" can have various meanings, but web sources tell me beeswax produces a superior candle--brighter, warmer, longer lasting, virtually drip and soot free. Sounds preferable to me.

I wonder if my response would fly for DD3 (DJ29) LABOR UNIONS: This union's TV commercials ask you to "Look for the Union Label"

I said ILGWU, pronounced as an acronym. I could also pronounce each letter individually. But I'm not sure I could have expanded it correctly. In particular, the L would have given me trouble. But I remember the commercials and the song.

I got FJ and I suppose it was to be expected that all three of our Seniors did as well, though only one of them spelled the name correctly.

We were in Ceuta exactly a year ago (back when Americans could freely roam the world). It was quite an interesting experience going from there to Morocco since Ceuta is, for refugee seekers, part of the EU. My favorite part of the boat ride from Spain was looking in one direction and seeing Europe (and the Rock of Gibraltar) on the left and then Africa on the right, which you may barely make out in this picture I took.

That was a standout debut by Hansford. Everything about him was intimidating from name, occupation, appearance, voice and 12 years experience coaching college quiz bowl. In some ways it was like seeing Mr. Hand on J!

Morty was on J! in 1966 and won "a few hundred bucks and the World Book Encyclopedia".

The FJ! clue is a miss for me no matter what year I see it.

A couple of funny moments with Paula calling a DD wager for more than allowed, Morty responding without ringing in, and Alex telling Hansford there was no choice left but CHESTER A. ARTHUR.

Even when they don't have a Bible category they manage to stick in a Bible clue. J30 GUINNESS RECORDS $500: In the Bible, the shortest one of these is the 117th; it has only 2 verses

Psalms. Surprising that they selected that for the hardest spot. Given a basic core of Bible knowledge WECIB? It's also kind of funny to list it as a Guinness record. It's not like anyone's going to break it.

Couple of geezer categories just kicked my butt. SONG LYRICS in J and FILMS OF THE '40s in DJ. Only got the top row clue in each. All others divided into "didn't know" and "never heard of".

I was close on DJ15 BUSINESS & INDUSTRY $1000: In the early 1980s it surpassed BankAmerica in assets to become the largest banking corp. in the U.S.

BIBLICAL SENIORS was easy enough, both for me and for the seniors. Four of the clues came from Genesis, two of those from the same chapter therein, chapter 5.

Seems like a pretty tough top row clue for J10 U.S. HISTORY $100: Though subpoenaed, this president refused to appear at Burr's trial in 1807

Hayfever was the accepted response. I said pollen.

FJ was in my wheelhouse. I took a Chaucer class as an undergrad and another as a grad student. Not surprising to see the contestants struggle with this one. Probably not the best FJ for a quarterfinal with wildcards on the line. Then again, Monday was a TS (though it really shouldn't have been), Wednesday was a single get (I missed it), and Friday had one miss. So maybe it's Tuesday's triple get FJ that was unfairly easy.
