spoiler for both this game's FJ and a recently aired FJ
It's a funny little coincidence that this game, with its FJ about a presidential election, was posted the day after a new episode whose FJ dealt with the same election.

In Bob Harris's blog post Just Over 20 Questions With Just Under 20 Champions (linked to on archive.org because the article gets cut off early on his site since a redesign years ago), Eugene talks a little about the endgame in that partial second episode.
Eugene Finerman wrote:In my second game, I actually was trailing as we went into Final Jeopardy. The clue was “The century in which the largest number of elements on the periodic table was discovered.”
Spoiler
I knew it couldn’t be the 18th Century because Priestley was considered a genius for discovering oxygen. I remembered that Mendeleyev created the table in the 19th Century, and I assumed that he didn’t have a number of blank spaces with the note: “Coming soon, an element near you.” The answer seemed to be the 19th Century. My opponents, infatuated with 20th Century technology, picked that era. I was right.

If I may be allowed the comparison (we are both 5x champions that came in third in the ToC after all), it reminds me a little of the one from my second game: https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=3106

Another episode not in the archive thanks to binghamton broadcasters. Airdate is July 13, 1987.

We'll never know Judi's response and wager since it was cut off.

Also could this be her on Wikipedia? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judi_Chamberlin

What does Alex say after "When the weather is right,..." at 7:17?

I certainly remember that "name the seven dwarfs" Disney commercial at 5:29, and trying my own memory every time it came on. Not a skill Jeopardy! has ever required, at least in any archived games. That Crystal Light jingle at 13:32 is also unforgettable ("...'cause I believe in me!"). And I remember seeing that idiotic Grape Nuts ad and thinking how dumb that guy must be not to be able to identify a Grape Nut by sight, texture, and taste, not to mention the fact that the box was obviously sitting right next to him.

The game is in: https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6975

Ruth Deutsch, who prepared all the clues in the game, is on Twitter @bubblyideas.

I wish we had game comment headers for the other archived games in the week, indicating the respective responsible writers.

"God's kingdom."

I don't remember that particular commercial, but I do save Bashful and Doc for the end of my dwarfs recitations, and have always felt like that came from something.

You doubled the wrong letter in "Caribbean" in the second place prize.

Thanks & thanks

As for "Bashful and Doc" coming last, Bashful obviously has to come after all the "-y" names, and the simple matter of meter dictates that "and Doc" has to come at the end.

I don't say "and," but your point stands. Nevertheless, I feel some sense that I had previously heard the names with those two at the end.

I think TV IN FILM for $500 should be 1 column over.

We welcome Jamie Wyeth's Pig (and Jamie Wyeth's pig) to the J-Canon.

Well, let Trevor(animfan) confirm on this one, but I'm sure Judi ended up with the Bahamas Princess Resort and Casino and David Peterman took the Yamaha Keyboard for 3rd place. Dale won the next episode with a $12,200 win.

I have no idea, but WBNG-TV editings are even worse and even sloppier than WJLA's in terms of gameplay portions missing and editing out the final results of episodes and editing out opening intros entirely at some points. Guess we have to contend with this until Trevor(animfan) can come to the rescue or in the case of J!, when the GSN recordings of these episodes come along.

Here's July 14, 1987. It's partial unfortunately; it cuts off in the middle of DJ.

I don't have anything "new old" to share, but I just wanted to put some information, amassed from Roadgeek Adam's 1986 newspaper postings in this thread, in a convenient (not to mention searchable) place.

To start off with, from one article he's got Lionel Goldbart's initial five shows dated as February 28 to March 6 (Friday to Thursday in 1986).
This puts Barbara Lowe's run (which is understood to have begun with defeating Lionel) from March 6 to March 12 (Thursday to Wednesday).
In an article by Clint Swett, he says he won the game after Barbara was retired (i.e., March 13) and went on to win two more games (March 14 and 17). His rundown of his fourth game (March 18) is cut off before the article ends, but he seems to be setting up a loss.
One of his opponents in that fourth game, he says, is "Geri, an editor at a New York-based rock magazine." If you Google "Geri rock magazine editor" (without quotation marks), you get results for Gerri Miller, former editor of Metal Edge, who died less than two weeks ago, on March 12. If you Google the correct spelling of her name alongside "Jeopardy," you can find an obituary at forward.com that calls her a two-time champion from 1986.

So that's a continuous chronicle of Jeopardy champions from 2/28/86 to 3/19/86. (Then there's a gap in our knowledge until around March 28 and Eric Schoeck's run.)

Here are more specifics with FJs from Clint's article

3/13/86:
Clint Swett: $2,300 + $2,300 = $4,600
Jean (a chemist): $4,600 - $1,050 = $3,550
Davina (a schoolteacher from Brooklyn): $2,800 - ?

3/14/86
Clint: $6,800 - $1,401 = $5,399 (failed to phrase his correct response as a question)
Thomas (a rock singer): $5,100 - ?
Jay (a private investigator): $4,100 - ?
(He mentions his mistaken wager to cover Jay instead of Thomas, but doesn't indicate whether that saved him the game or a couple thousand dollars, so we can't assume a particular range of wagers from Thomas.)

3/17/86
Clint: ? + ? = $7,201 (I'm assuming he got it right on a wager to cover, rather than betting $x,x99 and missing)
Cindy (a third-year law student at Yale): ? +/- ?
Anita (a homemaker from the Bronx): ? +/- ?

3/18/86
Clint: $6,400 - $6,301 (the article cuts off before he says how he fared on his fourth FJ, but it is easily surmised that he lost and therefore that he missed FJ)
Gerri Miller: $6,300 +/- ? (apparently she won!)
Louis (Clint gives no hometown or occupation, but says Louis was a black belt in karate): $2,100 +/- ?

I took a guess at the expected response for the last available clue. (But that incorrect response--really? "The 19th century" for the decade in which Blondie and Mary Worth started?)

I really don't know what they wanted for BABIES $600. There's no way to encapsulate the rooting reflex in a word. It's not just "sucking" or "nursing". And I can see how it could be confusing for contestants after just asking about breastfeeding two clues above, which would seem to eliminate that as any part of an expected response.

Dale picked BABIES $400 twice, but Alex knew what he meant.

On the Trebektrivia front, I'm not sure I knew before today that Alex liked to golf in Banff.

In Dale's first game he won $12,400 getting FJ right from second place. In Dale's third game, he's announced with a two-day total of $24,600, and loses while offering a tie from the lead. So he won his second game with $12,200, and I assume two possibilities:

- Risa worked her way up to $6,100 with three gets on the remaining material for $600, $800, and $1,000, and Dale got at least one of the other three clues (and/or a rebound on the COMICS clue) and then he successfully wagered himself up to $12,200 to keep her from overtaking him; or

- he got up to $6,100 (from the one $600 clue remaining on the board) and entered FJ in second place after Risa had a small run on the other clues (or Larry had a complete run of them!), but prevailed with a second double-up.

(At a glance it might seem that at $5,500 and $3,700 with only one $600 clue remaining alongside a few $800s and $1,000s, Dale and Risa couldn't both get to $6,100, but it is possible with combinations of negs and gets—for example, Dale could go + $800 + $800 - $1,000, and Risa could go + $1,000 + $1,000 + $1,000 - $600.)

It's nice to know from his two other games how he bets from each of the two likely scenarios. (Feel free to quote this and laugh at me should the remainder of the game turn up and he just liked the FJ category and bet all $6,100 from the lead.)

Say bigblue999, whatever J! episodes are on YT from the WBNG-TV sources you gotta upload to the IA because the YT uploads won't be here much longer.

Say MarkBarrett, in the DJ! part of the November 28, 2008 episode, whoever put the 2nd Daily Double at clue 21 should be switched to clue 20 and the $400 answer in PRETZEL LOGIC should be clue 21. Can you fix that?
