Just "sources say" at the moment, but it's likely true...

Tom Brady retires after 22 NFL seasons and 7 Super Bowl rings.

Barty is the first Australian woman to win the Australian Open since Chris O'Neil in 1978. (Aussie women won 10 of the first 11 editions of the tournament in the Open Era, starting in 1968, but none in the interceding 44 years. It's been since Mark Edmonson in 1976 on the men's side.)

Music catalog sales: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16bb ... ue&sd=true

Trying to share it with a Google drive link as it looked like a USA Today subscriber exclusive to keep me from sharing it a typical way with the article link.

It could be considered a tl;dr, but since it could easily make a 5-clue category or FJ! round clue consider making it a too long-did read instead.

The Power of the Dog leads all films with 12 total Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Director (Jane Campion), and Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch). Denis Villeneuve's Dune nabbed 10 nods, including Picture but otherwise mostly in technical categories.

The Best Picture nominees:
Belfast (about director Kenneth Branagh's childhood in Northern Ireland during "The Troubles")
CODA (about a girl growing up with deaf parents, the title is an acronym for Child Of Deaf Adults)
Don't Look Up (the... divisive climate change allegory about astronomers warning of an impending asteroid strike)
Drive My Car (also nominated in the International Feature category, a Japanese theater director mourns his wife while staging a production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya; adapted from a Haruki Murakami short story)
Dune (part 1 of the adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel)
King Richard (Will Smith plays the father of Venus and Serena Williams)
Licorice Pizza (Paul Thomas Anderson's story of a 15-year-old kid (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman's son Cooper) who falls for a 25-year old (Alana Haim from the band HAIM; her sisters, mother and father play her family in the film) in early 1970s Los Angeles)
Nightmare Alley (Guillermo del Toro helms a remake of a 1947 noir film)
The Power of the Dog (Campion directs this western; title comes from Psalms 22:20 in the Bible)
West Side Story (Steven Spielberg directs, 60 years after the original; Ariana DeBose as Anita is the frontrunner for Supporting Actress, which was won by Rita Moreno for the original)

A few notes from this year's Oscar nominations:

With her nomination for The Power of the Dog, Jane Campion becomes the first woman to receive a second Academy Award nomination for Best Director. Campion was previously nominated for 1993’s The Piano.

The Danish film Flee (2021) is the first movie ever to be Oscar-nominated in the Documentary, Animated Feature, and International Film categories.

With his remake of West Side Story, Steven Spielberg extends his record as the producer with the most Best Picture nominations (11) all-time.

Kenneth Branagh becomes the first person ever with career nominations in seven — count 'em, 7 — different categories. He breaks the previous record of six, shared by Walt Disney, George Clooney, and Alfonso Cuaron. To date, Branagh has been nominated in the following categories: Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Original Screenplay, Adapted Screenplay, Live Action Short, and Best Picture (as one of the producers of Belfast).

Troy Kotsur, nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in CODA, becomes the second deaf performer nominated for an acting Oscar. The first, Marlee Matlin, won the Best Actress award for 1986's Children of a Lesser God.

Penélope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) and Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos) are the first married couple in 55 years to be nominated for acting Oscars in the same year. Only five other couples have accomplished the feat, the last being Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in 1967.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is nominated in the Best Song category for the Spanish-language “Dos Oruguitas” from Disney’s Encanto. If Miranda wins, he will ascend to EGOT fame, having already won two Emmys, three Grammys and three Tonys (not to mention a Pulitzer).

Billie Eilish is nominated (with brother Finneas O’Connell) in the Best Original Song category for writing the title song for the James Bond film No Time to Die, making Eilish the youngest-ever nominee in the category at the age of 20.

The song “No Time to Die” has already won a Grammy and a Golden Globe. If it wins the Oscar, it will be the third consecutive Bond theme to do so, after Adele’s “Skyfall” and Sam Smith’s Spectre song, “Writing’s on the Wall.” Prior to Skyfall, only four Bond themes had been nominated for an Academy Award: “Live and Let Die,” “Nobody Does It Better” from The Spy Who Loved Me, “For Your Eyes Only,” and "The Look of Love" from the 1967 Bond spoof Casino Royale. Meanwhile, John Barry passed away in 2011 and he's still peeved about the "Goldfinger" snub.
