Re: Monday, May 16, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
No surprise that Mayim opened with a reaction clip of Ryan winning on Friday.
Not that I'm one to talk since I missed a clue about him when I played, but I thought one of the players today should have known the author when spotted The Plague.
Mayim: ...this 1876 battle...
Ryan: What is [*]?
Mayim: Yes, the Battle of [*].
The FJ! clue became easier once I realized it was not the state of MS, but the river. I matched Mayim's alternate correct response instead of the name both Ryan and Nick had written.
Ryan is 4/5 on wagering clues and his Coryat had a nice jump tonight from Friday's tally. Ryan's wagering could have been strategic in some way, but during the credits it looked like Ryan was tapping his head. That made me think his winning total was $5K lower due to a math thing and that could tie into his SAT chat story.
Nick made a bet to fall to 8001 if Divya doubled and would also have been above Ryan's "expected" fall-to sum of 3199 if he had bet to get to 29201. How was Nick to know that today was the day for the suicide wager from 2nd? It has to be a nagging pain to play the what if game.

25/0, 20/2
trash: S. Africa, patient, Chile. More trash: Camus, invade Russia DD, 0 & 00.
the clue should've specified American roulette as European roulette doesn't have 00.
(matched Nick) for betting clues. I have actually been to the Arch, so this was a gimme.

Of course Seabiscuit was too young for WWI but it's disappointing to see he sat out the Spanish Civil War, let alone WWII. Let's celebrate our true heroes, shall we?

Re: Monday, May 16, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Coryat: $36,200
47 R/2 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: South Africa, Chile, Albert Camus, invade Russia (DD), Paul Giamatti, femur (DD), 0 & 00
Nick appeared to be a pretty strong player, but her femur needed more cowbell. Missing out on what could have been a serendipitous win by using sound wagering strategy really has to hurt as well. Ryan doesn't appear to have to chops of a megachamp, but he might well make the TOC. He's certainly no slouch.
Recent national parks quizzes on one of the apps I frequent made this DD a slam dunk. Fun fact: the Gateway Arch is 630 feet in both height and width.
I had close to zero confidence on my DD2 response, but they don't give points based on how well you know the information. Speaking of not knowing information, I missed out on $2000 for The Big Short by not knowing it was classified as a comedy. That threw me off just enough that I didn't hit the button.

Pretty sure Camus came out several episodes ago, maybe about The Stranger.

This game is a draw for the Strong Form of Shore’s Conjecture. The second-place player bet “small.” —Bob

Re: Monday, May 16, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
For anyone living in New Orleans, and probably no one else in the country, the Chalmette Monument was extreme negbait. Turns out that national park is only slightly bigger (125.6 acres), but the monument itself isn't anywhere close to 630 feet tall (only 100 feet tall). Apparently never realized just how tall 630 feet was.
Also loved Nick's hair. Also reminded me that I'm due for fresh hair dye, maybe I'll try doing just half !

Who exactly calls it the St. Louis Arch?

This Missouri native says nobody within the state would. I don’t remember hearing anybody refer to it that way regardless of where they’re from.
The proper name is Gateway Arch, at first glance I’d rule St. Louis Arch wrong. Would Seattle Needle be correct for Space Needle?

Re: Monday, May 16, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
This game is a win for what I've termed an "anti-Shoretegic" wager from second place: had Nick anticipated that Divya might wager less than $800 (as she did) in order to stay above a wagering-to-cover-and-missing-FJ Ryan, they could have bet $3,200 more and won. Ryan's bet was above the Shoretegic wager (otherwise he would have beat Nick by $2), but not by enough to beat counter-Shoretegy (which I guess is another term I have for it).
edit: corrected pronoun for Nick, who is apparently they/them notwithstanding Mayim's "ladies' arm wrestling" in the interviews

I tend to agree, but at least we know the end result would stay the same if they had both been ruled against.Golf wrote:This Missouri native says nobody within the state would. BTW, I believe Ryan's FJ wager was intentional shortegy. He gambled that Nick would make the smart wager.

Re: Monday, May 16, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
It amounted to that, but I think his wager was more about keeping Divya locked out rather than anticipating a particular wager from Nick. After all, as I said in my post above, the Shoretegic wager from Ryan beats Nick by $2. He overshot Shoretegy by $2,999 because he was betting the largest exact thousand he could without letting Divya into the game.Category 13 wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 10:43 pm BTW, I believe Ryan's FJ wager was intentional shortegy.
