Re: Thursday, May 26, 2022 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Not a pretty game with 0/6 on wagering clues, double digit wrong and double digit TS. Not that I was much better with my 1/4 on wagering clues, only getting DD1.
countyguy won't be happy that the players did not finish LET'S COUNTY UP THAT STATE.
Ryan missed DD1 and if that was not enough to displease viewers then the players (three of them on stage) could not name the title for the head guy at the U.N. Not the current man's name. Just the title.
Ryan got another run and today it was MOVIE CO-STARS.
The FJ! clue wanted two names and often that will not go well. I managed to not match any of the players (John went for his home town) as I had Black and Baltic for strictly a guessing game as I'm not gonna recall Churchill's exact words. I had to laugh at the subject for the FJ! clue since I precall it yesterday for FAMOUS SPEECHES.
Double digits for Ryan and he needs a victory tomorrow to avoid becoming the first to lose regular play game 11.

I'm sure many boardies will get not only a 4th podium but we need to bring out a 5th podium too.
The county misses / UN sec gen. stick out pretty badly.

I blame Coach Ernie Pantusso. There's nothing in his song about the Iron Curtain bordering the A-dri-atic.
I matched Mark with the Killer B's.

Wait, is this particular part of this particular Churchill speech supposed to be memorized? I also said Baltic and Mediterranean as that is not incorrect as far as the northern and southern land terminus of the Iron Curtain.
But I had to be specific to this speech? Cool...
Unsurprising 0/3 (with or without the silly answers)

If you wanted to walk from Gdańsk to Trieste (roughly the curtain defined by the seas in the clue), going smack through Vienna in the process, Google Maps estimates it would take you 251 hours. Change your ending point further southeast, into Croatia, or Montenegro, or Albania, and you add 50 or 100 hours.

25/1, 21/4. What was that train wreck in Historia Espana?
trash: N, secretary-general (oof), ailerons, MS, KS. more: whale, Cartier, sybaritic, Aragon, Sahara, Basque
13600. Paging our favorite penguin...
how on Earth do you miss any of these, let alone all.
FJ! could've applied to yesterday's category. I seem to recall some discussion that questioned a distance given for the two cities.
anyway, I wasn't missing this.
edit: from exactly two years ago Iron Curtain distance discussion

Coryat: $38,200
50 R/2 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: (hym)n, Arabic (DD), Secretary-General, Mississippi, Kansas, ailerons, 2001: A Space Odyssey (DD), Cartier, layette, Babylon (DD), Aragon, Basque
Not sure how "give the title of the top guy at the UN" goes TS.
Ailerons was my proudest get in a while. Last weekend, my wife and I took the kids to participate in Young Eagles, a program in which small-craft pilots take kids out for short (~10 minutes) flights to pique their interest in aviation. (If you have kids ages 8-17, you should check to see if there is a chapter in your area. It's free, and it was awesome.) As we waited in the hangar, we were teaching the kids about plane anatomy, which led to my googling the name for the little flap thingies on the wings. I was panicked for a second flipping through my mental Rolodex while Mayim read the clue, but the term came back to me in time.

I went back and forth between Mediterranean and Adriatic, not knowing the text of the speech. (I chose...poorly.) The clue is not worded well. It is ambiguous as to whether it requires a) the seas mentioned by Churchill in the "Iron Curtain" speech, or b) the seas actually served by the cities mentioned in that speech. If the former, Baltic and Adriatic is the only acceptable response. If the latter, Mediterranean should be accepted in place of Adriatic.

Caspian and Mediterranean here.
Might have helped if she had explained the silent letter category in advance.
