400+600 on DD1 seemed unusual. cheezguyty when was the last time that happened?

The game was a little messy with double digit Ws and TS clues while exciting to see who would lead for the FJ! round. Molly managed to come back from -3500 on DDs to still play the FJ! round and gain the 2nd place prize.

The FJ! category had me guessing for fun: Darwin, Dickens, the dreaded Keats/Shelley/Byron sorting and Marx.

The FJ! clue had me match no one as I wrote last name only and if Sadie had done that or even just initialized the first name or even spelled the first name correctly, probably would have won. Sadie had the wrong time to go for a full response with the clock winding down.

Sadie's response:

It looks she had an H for Harriet, switched to S for perhaps Sojourner Truth and then went back to first instinct, though a little too late.
Megan has made it to next week. It may not be the best or smoothest path ever, but it tops thousands of other J! contestants.

This game is a draw for the Strong Form of Shore's Conjecture. The second-place player bet "big." --Bob

pretty much, two options for "her". no need to write first and last name IMO.

Wow... I don't know what to say. A case can be made that there is an "n" there. There must be more we don't know...

Just wow...

Even if there wasn't, isn't there enough to know what she was trying for, or do they not accept that?

I don't think the first name is the issue (I'm pretty sure in THAT case it's fine).

You've been here 10 years, you've seen much worse ala Emanciptation Proclamation. You know the answer to this.

That is definitely beyond rough for the contestant. It's entirely possible that if the first name is spelled correctly (without the second T) that there's enough time to get the last letter in time. Of course we all know that last name only is best for many reasons.

I don't think the first name is the issue (I'm pretty sure in THAT case it's fine).
What are the first two letters in the surname? It looks like she wrote Tu. But look at the second-from-last letter, right before the counter-clockwise stroke. If that's an a then doesn't it look vaguely similar to what she wrote after T? And if she finished the b after the first u, there aren't enough strokes to form an m; if there's an m it seems to be preceded by an l. Leaving aside the mystery of that final counter-clockwise stroke, she seems to have written Tulmu, Talma, Tubnu, or Tabna -- or maybe even Tulma or Tubna. I don't think any of those can be pronounced in a way that gets us to Tubman, no matter what we do with that final stroke.

If "what she was trying for" becomes the standard, plenty of other responses in the last few years must be subject to reconsideration (Second Chance Tournament, anyone?). As sad as it is to see, she didn't fulfill the requirement of writing something that can be pronounced like the answer.

Lots of tough breaks and odd judging in there. Besides the Harriet Tubman scribble (which I know I would have counted, but I can sort of understand why they didn't), there's the Tenochtitlan pronunciation nitpicking but then Bizet being accepted when rhyming with "jet". Just left an odd taste in my mouth.

I probably would pronounced the CH as a K.

I say if she wanted to, she could claim that the "N" is there. I doubt there are handwriting experts on staff. Doubling down, I'm sure there's proof of worse chicken scratch getting by.

If my vote mattered, it would be to bring her back, Second Chance Tournament or otherwise.

But like I said before, I'm sure there's more we don't know.

19/2, 20/4. Please do not have Home Renovation as a category ever again :x
trash: Tenochtitlan, Buffaloafer
more trash: Liebowitz, Terminator  , longevity, Tower of London.
betting: :D :D :( (guessed Liz. If she's legendary, there shouldn't be a grave)
I have looked at Sadie's response repeatedly & can't make heads nor tails of it.
Need better eyes than mine :|

I thought hard CH or K was the proper pronunciation.

I don’t have any sort of photo editing program with me right now to try to show my idea, and I’m not sure I can explain it intelligibly in words, but:

There’s pretty clearly a cursive “b” after the “u”.

Even though it isn’t a full cursive m, the next two humps (the left side of the first hump is part of the “b”) could be viewed as an “m”. After all, the print “m” only has two humps.

After that is what looks like a cursive “r”, but it could easily be an “a” where she simply failed to merge the left and right sides of the “a”. At the end is a squiggle that curves to the left that forms the shape of an “n”.

Outrageous.

What a dumb ruling, it very obviously said Tubman. Jackie better not lose her TOC spot because of this. Sadie should also be brought back.
sup, i'm bliss.

Not getting the wagering. Megan lets Molly back in the game and falls below Sadie’s MSBIW on a miss. Then Sadie doesn’t cover second place.

I was hoping the $400 left on the table on DD1 would make a difference going into FJ.

Instaget on FJ. I can see an argument for it either way on Sadie’s response. I just wrote Tubman on my paper at home. No need to write both names, especially if you don’t figure it out until late in the music.

Cringed a bit on the Lou Gehrig clue.
