CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Welcome back. Let's spend a few moments now with the players. Robert Gibbs, I have met a number of White House press secretaries after they left office. They have all been very intelligent, humorous, marvelous human beings, but when I have watched you guys at the White House--
[Chris laughs.]
Alex: --I have a completely different opinion. Now what is it about that job that changes your personality--Jekyll and Hyde? What's going on?
Robert: Stress. Uh, I think stress is probably the biggest thing. And, you know, Alex, you don't ask follow-ups, so it's a whole lot easier.
Alex: Uh-huh.
Robert: Yeah.
Alex: Now tell me about your charity.
Robert: I'm playing for something called the Pine Hills Literacy Project. It's an after-school program that I started in my hometown of Auburn, Alabama.
Alex: Auburn?
Robert: And, uh, we focus on partnering with the Boys & Girls Club in teaching first through sixth graders greater proficiency in reading, and hopefully developing a lifelong love for reading to help them, uh, both in their education and in their lives.
Alex: Great. Good charity.
Robert: Thank you.
[Applause]
Alex: Lizzie O'Leary from CNN. Now do you cover, as the aviation reporter for CNN, do you cover TSA?
Lizzie: Yes, I do.
Alex: Oh, good.
[Laughter]
Alex: All right.
Lizzie: You can send your complaints here.
Alex: Good. Tell me about your charity.
Lizzie: My charity is 826DC, and what they do is do after-school tutoring, uh, and really teaching kids to love to write. Not just to read, but to write. The kids have written two books. And this is part of a national chain, but this one is in my neighborhood. I grew up in D.C. It was very important to me to play for kids in my hometown.
Alex: Good for you.
[Applause]
Alex: Chris has been with us before. Chris, I'm curious--you host two shows. Do you approach it from the point of view of, I have an opinion about the subject that's going to be discussed today, or you have your researchers look into that subject, and then form an opinion?
Chris: Here's how I try to do it. Ready?
Alex: Yeah.
Chris: Uh, fact, analysis, and then opinion.
Alex: Okay.
Chris: That's the--that's the best way to do it. Report the news, figure out what it means, and then figure out what your attitude is about it.
Alex: Okay. Now...
Chris: So that's how I do the show. So right before I go on the air, I write my close to the show. You know, "Let me finish with this." I write that right before I go on the show, having gone through all the notes that day and all the arguments with the producers, so it is sort of reflecting all the--the thought I put into it, and the work.
Alex: Okay. Now your charity.
Chris: Uh, my charity is my high school, La Salle College High School. It's right outside of Philadelphia. And it's where a lot of regular kids used to go, but now a lot of rich kids go. I want to make sure regular kids go. It's a scholarship program for working kids.
[Applause]
Alex: Good for you.
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
HARDBALL $400: In the first Hall of Fame vote in 1936, this Tiger was named on 222 of the 226 ballots
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Robert: $4,400
Chris: $3,900
Lizzie: $3,600

Re: Monday, May 14, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
I got about 11 in the first round and maybe 8 the second. I had a total of 19.
I disliked the fact that it seemed to drag on. The players seem to be slow today. I had absolutely no clue on FJ and did not guess.

They were a smart group. Got a lot of clues I didn't. Gibbs was especially pokey in his clue choosing though. Too many uncovered clues including 2 daily doubles.

Big-time brain-blank; for FJ! I guessed
Ended up being a pretty good finish, but it seems only one of the three players really took to heart Maggie's Oath: "I will not quell the mo!!"

Re: Monday, May 14, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
Lots of comments on Robert's Valada-esque clue selection, but nothing on Chris' filibuster in the interviews? I was expecting Alex to LTaM halfway through that tirade.
As long as we don't have another game as dreadful as this one or this one, I can't complain too much. (Seriously, why the pluperfect hell did they think of dragging out those cameos?! What were TPTB smoking that week?)
I just couldn't get anything right. I was blanking on easy things such as earthquake ("oh, not tornadoes or hurricanes, the other things… what're they called?"), canal, etc.
I wouldn't have gotten Cosby if you had spotted me Bill. Mark Twain Prize had me thinking it'd be someone in literature, but I couldn't think of any black writer/actor (even though I'm well aware that Cos wrote a bunch of books).

Hasn't Matthews been on the show before? Gibbs I can excuse, but there's no reason for Chris to have been so ****ing slow.
Not a chance on FJ. Couldn't remember what the Spingarn Medal was (on the tip of my tongue the whole way), and even if I had, my mindset still would've been "pick a random black guy", and still wouldn't have said Cosby. Ended up WAGging Holbrook based on Twain.

"Who is GARY POWERS!"
Other than that hilarious moment, this was a snoozer. I hope the rest of the week is better, or I might check out around Thursday.
Not a chance on FJ. Couldn't remember what the Spingarn Medal was (on the tip of my tongue the whole way), and even if I had, my mindset still would've been "pick a random black guy", and still wouldn't have said Cosby. Ended up WAGging Holbrook based on Twain.

I got it right away... after Alex's hint. Before that, I was trying to convince myself this wasn't another FJ! about Hal Holbrook.

I have to join the epically slow club here. I was cheering for Gibbs the entire way, and I am happy to see him win a triple stumper.
(I came out with Harry Bellafonte on Final, but that was a bad choice for numerous reasons.)
- Also, I never want to see Chris Matthews on the show again for his slowpoke behavior and senile-esque movement through the board.

The applause after each answer makes me irritated.

Reminds me of when I saw Season 1 episodes on YouTube. They applauded after EVERY clue back then.ACW wrote:The applause after each answer makes me irritated.

Mea Culpa. I misremembered that. But now that you mention it, it all becomes clear.alietr wrote:Must've been sitting on the other side. I had gone with Whoopi.bpmod wrote:That was a better guess than I had, and incidentally, the guy sitting next to me in the audience guessed that as well. He'll probably pipe up later.
Oh, and the guy on the other side... I don't remember if he told me his guess.

Dull contestants make for a really dull episode. 8 leftovers in the first round & then some more in DJ. Let's hope it gets better. Surely the others can't be as stupid?
