KAJ is now a "cultural ambassador" for the USA. As others have said, a disappointing game. The number of triple stumpers w'as agonizing. I expected Dana yo do better.

Kareem and I remember when it was a real rating.
I feel sorry for whomever was stuck sitting behind Kareem in the X-rated theater. Although perhaps it would be best to avoid using the word "stuck" in that setting.

Speaking of Kareem, for someone as tall as him, would the opponents on tonight's show have been cranked up to the maximum height possible, or would they have some way of putting him in a "hole" to level out the height discrepancy? Perhaps there was some mention of this that those who attended the taping could share with us?

Dana Perino was just talking on Hannity that she was on the box, plus 5 inch heels.

Some of the triple stumpers, particularly in the DJ round, were downright stunning. Sally Ride (first American woman in space)...Kate Middleton (now the Duchess of Cambridge)...Jurassic Park (Michael Crichton + raptor)...

I don't believe anyone has mentioned David's response of Coretta Cott KIng, which to my ears was clearly missing the the initial letter of the middle name. Alex ruled him correct, then he corrected it to Scott KIng, but nothing more was said about it. Am I remembering correctly that someone mentioned this after attending the tapings, because I seem to recall a discussion about a player correctly himself after being ruled correct? Had this been a regular game, it seemed like they may have gone back and negged him for his first response being incorrect, and by the time he corrected it Alex had already ruled.

There's your problem. This is a celeb game. He could've said "What is Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa?" and been ruled correct.

Instaget FJ. Nothing else to say about this one, very little entertainment value. I think I'm out. Celebrity weeks are always a test of patience, but this one has been brutal so far, and I'm not in the mood for three more episodes of this. I'll just play the FJs from the thread/archive.
Oh, come on. It's like a wreck on the interstate. you can't help but look.

I never watch these. I simply FF my DVR to FJ and play that. Couldn't care less about the rest of the game.

I tried watching today. The rating blooper gave me a chuckle. Alex's ET gave me the creeps. Besides that, wasn't worth it.

Both opponents were on a foot-tall box. It made for some hilarity when they were taking the obligatory "Alex with the contestant" pictures; he borrowed Dana's platform for the picture with Kareem.

IIRC, when they filmed KAJ in a celeb tourney in Culver City, it was pretty much the same disparity in height on the air.

BTW, "X" was never an official rating; it simply meant it wasn't rated at all by the MPAA, which most theater operators took to mean "adults only." The problem was when the MPAA wanted to come up with an "adults only" rating years later, they (a) found that they hadn't trademarked that rating (unlike G, M/GP/PG, PG-13, and R), and (b) "X" had become synonymous with smut or porn, and often mainstream theaters wouldn't touch it (and, in some cases, it was either illegal, or newspapers wouldn't carry ads for it due to their own policies). That's when they came up with the NC-17 rating.

Alex's E.T. impression did nothing to help me figure out the 1982 movie I have not seen since its original release. Off the top of my head I can think of three more memorable lines from the movies than the one used in the clue.

If someone had said voice for Billy Joel's main musical instrument that would have been ruled incorrect?

Kareem's interview and charity speech ate up a lot of time for the first round clues. It's the second night in a row Alex could not keep the guy at the champ's spot in a decent time frame.

For the FJ clue I wrote Guggenheim since the descriptions looked like they had to be leading there. If I was playing Guesstimania I never would have been close to 1959 for the opening. Based only on the pictures I've seen I would have thought the thing was more modern around the same time Space Mountain at Disneyland opened.

I never got negged for when my mouth put a T at the end of "Affleck." I think they allow for some lingual missteps every now and then. As for correcting yourself, I think only being ruled wrong closes the door completely, and fixing something after being ruled right will take. (And erroneously correcting a correct response to a wrong one after being ruled correct doesn't undo the correct response.)

Bamaman wrote:I've never seen the Guggenheim or heard it described. Went with MOMA just to have something. It does pop up a lot on the show and it has weird art, so it seemed like it might have a weird design.
Same here, surprised I had a stand-and-stare on a Power Players FJ. Had heard of the Guggenheim, but that's about it, didn't even know what city it's in. A quick Google Images search later made everything click to the wording of the clue.

(When the clue was being read, I pictured the Sydney Opera House as matching the description, but knew it wasn't a museum, and I believe it was built post-1959)
Bamaman wrote:FJ betting wasn't the best. The leader had a lock and bet to protect it. The other two had no reason to go all in. but it does not matter if you come in second or third, so it is no big deal.
Sure they did, you said it yourself: second and third get the same, so it's no big deal. I don't think they expected David to risk his lock, even in Power Players / Celebrity Week, lock protection is to be expected, so both going all in was perfectly cromulent.
Bamaman wrote:But why do they have a former basketball player in a week devoted to Washington DC "insiders"?
I wondered the same thing when the lineup was announced, I think they used his "cultural ambassador" status as a pretty big shoehorn to get one of their favourite celebrity players in somehow.

I was worried for a minute it would be no DDs.

Actually, I was hoping they would run out of time before finding that one DD, just to make this game even worse. I think second place should get more for their charity than third place, just like in a real game.

I used to boycott celeb games and Kids Week altogether until I started posting on the boards and wanted to be able to take part in the discussions.

I never, *never* "boycott" Jeopardy (even on a night like tonight, I learned something, for example, stuff about the Guggenheim I woudln't know or have looked up had I not been watching) because I love learning new things so much. But on celebrity week (and maybe kids week, although my kids (ages 7 and 9) like watching those weeks with me) I might try less hard to watch the show.

But there are fewer where his voice is not heard than where his piano is not heard.

I made an educated guess on the Guggenheim based upon its circular shape (the wedding cake part pointed me there), which I recall from two movies -- one a recent chic flick (When in Rome maybe?) which had its climax there, and from a parody of it in the original Planet of the Apes -- the museum sequences with the "stuffed human" (one of the astronauts) was in a circular ramp-type museum.

I actually did know Guggenheim, but not because I grew up in NJ with NYC being the nearest really big city. I got it because I came across the picture while researching some wrong answers to put up for my Jeopardy! game that is currently offline but soon to be back online.
