Random chatter in World of Warcraft general chat...

"Where's this NPC I'm supposed to loot from?..."
"Have you tried turning him on and off again?"
"There we go, set him to channel 3."

That's a 1%er joke, right there (as in, 1% of the audience gets it)

Congrats! I welcomed grandchild #5 into the world this week. One of the (many) good things about grandparenthood is that you don't lose any sleep.

Thanks! Kiddo is about to turn six months. Somehow I restrained myself from buying the Jeopardy onesie.

As for Ms. Couric's remarks (which I have only seen referenced in the usual alarmist conservative news headlines), some enormous percentage of the GOP still believes that Tr*** won the 2020 election. That at least calls for some education, if not reeducation.
Care to cite your source that an "enormous percentage" of the GOP believe that nonsense? I think it's equally likely that an enormous percentage of the other party believe whatever nonsensical "facts" they are told to believe, such as "an enormous percentage of the GOP think that Trump won the election".
46.1% of the votes in the 2016 election were for Donald Trump. After four years of nothing but lies from him and essentially everyone associated with him, 46.9% of votes in the 2020 election were for Donald Trump. Are you telling me that after believing his lies for 4 years, that you think the majority of those Trump voters suddenly stopped believing him and now they think he's a whackjob with all these "stolen election" claims?

If the alternate view is that you don't think he was lying incessantly for the last four years, and therefore you were proud to vote for him, why do you think he suddenly started lying now?

Yay!!! The political crap is finally here in Reretaken Down, right where it... well, "belongs" isn't exactly the word. Right where it's tolerated? Grudgingly permitted? Somewhere in there. These are the "conversations" that make me want to block the people I kind of agree with just as much as the ones I totally don't.

I for one am happy to finally be living in a banana republic and look forward to the re-education camps.

Oh please. Every president ever has lied. Biden lied about the new stimulus package before he even set foot in office. They ALL do it. They will ALL say and do whatever they think you want to get your vote. Democratic, Republican, independent. You're actually going to sit here and pretend there weren't eight years of Obama lies before Trump and eight years of Bush lies before that, ad nauseum?

And no, people didn't vote because they love lies. Maybe, just maybe, people wanted a president who supports life for unborn babies. Maybe they voted in favor of not one, not two, but four Middle East accords. Support for Israel and the recognition of Israel by some states for the first time in 70 years. Maybe many of those voters are people who benefit from the $24k standard deduction that more than doubled the amount they earned before they paid that first cent in taxes.

Yeah, we get it. None of that is important to you. We get that the standard deduction means nothing to you, nor does the Jewish state. We get that that you don't care about any of that stuff. But some do. And for people like you to sit in your ivory towers and diminish the things that ARE important to other people is truly what's deplorable.

I expected so much more from "smart" people when I found these boards. I expected open-mindedness and the ability to see all perspectives. I really wasn't expecting an entire community of Sheldon Coopers.

False equivalence. Every President has strayed from complete veracity no doubt. However, Trump lied a documented 20,000 times in his 4 years of office, often in complete contradiction to established facts, from something as petty as his inauguration crowd being the largest in history to as damaging as that he won the 2020 election in a landslide. No one else has come close to that record of untruth and I defy you to demonstrate otherwise.
And no, people didn't vote because they love lies. Maybe, just maybe, people wanted a president who supports life for unborn babies. Certainly people voted for him for many different reasons. However, a recent Pew Research poll showed that 79% of GOP voters believe that the 2020 election results are illegitimate, despite there being no documented evidence of fraud on a scale that would alter the outcome of the election. Why do they think that? Because of a lie that has been widely spread by Trump and right wing media outlets. That is the issue.

I saw posts on social media today ballyhooing the fact that it was the 21st day of the 21st year of the 21st century. Some went so far as to point out that 9:21 pm was the 21st minute of the 21st hour of that day. But I noticed for the first time* that we count our years and days from 1, but our minutes and hours from 0. So if 12:00 am is the first minute of the first hour of the day, it follows that 8:20 is the 21st minute of the 21st hour.

*Obviously I was aware of it at some level, but today was the first time I put words to the idea.

I'm thinking this show should've been canceled several seasons back. The writers for United States have clearly run out of ideas. They've forgotten what made the show great and attracted people in the first place. They're in a tailspin and will just keep coming up with stupider and less realistic plot twists until we say we've had enough and pull the plug.

As long as we’re raisig the profile of bad actors...apparently Matt Gaetz was raised in the house featured in the film The Truman Show.

Weird.

I was just looking at polls from 2001 - most left-wingers thought Gore won legitimately. Hillary was certainly referencing that not that long ago. Many left-wingers still think the Russians had something to do with the 2016 election. There was even an impeachment conviction over it, though it ended up being about something else. I find Couric's remarks incredibly biased and offensive. Many left-wingers never considered Trump the legitimate president, even though the 2016 election wasn't that close. They wanted it decided based on the popular vote - understandable, but that's not the way we decide the presidency under the current rules.

As someone who really despises both parties, I don't understand the constant partisanship from both sides. It runs as deep as the deepest of religious faiths. People who say they "believe in science" and use that as a cudgel against everything they don't agree with. But science isn't something that should be about belief. It's just a process - one that is constantly open to question. If it doesn't hold up, it shouldn't be a big deal. Belief is a religious term, not a scientific term.

One thing is for certain these days, people on the left feel a lot more comfortable expressing this hate in public. And they don't seem to understand that outlets like CNN and PBS and NPR are heavily biased in terms of what they choose to report. I don't know where to look for news these days, but it's not any of the mainstream outlets.

Associated Press is probably your best bet for neutral and fact-based reporting. I like the New York Times if you want more journalism.

I think the website https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/ does a fairly good job of reporting the biases and accuracy of media sources. They have separate measures for left-right bias (extreme, left, left-center, least biased, right-center, right, extreme) and factual-nonfactual bias (Very High, High Mostly Factual, Mixed, Low, Very Low). Other neutral fact-check type websites have become corrupted and biased over time so I would be skeptical but open to receiving information.

For example they rate Associated Press as Least Biased and Very High factual reporting. CNN is rated Left and Mixed. Fox News is Right and Mixed. I wouldn't consider either CNN or Fox News a highly rated source of information. They are large entities and may be the first on the scene of some stories though. NPR is Left-Center and very high factual reporting. New York Times is left-center and high factual reporting. PBS Newshour is Left-Center and high factual reporting.

I think it's important for people to stay informed. There are some big problems with the media but it's important not to tune out entirely because an uninformed populace allows bad actors to act without resistance.
