CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: David Schuman is from New York. He's a world traveler. In a few months, I'm going to be visiting Australia, and I have a choice, while I'm there, of visiting, uh, a rainforest or the Great Barrier Reef. You snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef. Why should I go there?

David: Yeah, the Great Barrier Reef was phenomenal. I just finished my semester abroad there in the spring, and... th--I went out there, and the boat ride was one of the most miserable things--

Alex: Oh.

David: --I've ever been on. I could not stop throwing up, the entire time, but it was okay, because everyone else on the boat was, too. But... And then on--but once I got there, it was phenomenal. The colors--you can't really describe it. You can't really capture it in pictures, either.

Alex: Okay.

Alex: Sophie Hill, Navy analyst from Coronado, California. That's the headquarters of the Navy SEALs, right?

Sophie: It is. I work for the Navy SEALs, doing capability development, and when they take me out into the field, I can't tell if they actually want my opinion on things, or they just want to see me in body armor and high heels.

Alex: Yeah, well, you're always surrounded by guys who are very muscular and in shape, right?

Sophie: I am.

Alex: How does it feel to be in front of somebody like me now?

Sophie: No difference whatsoever, sir.

Alex: Oh, well, uh--

Sophie: Looking good.

Alex: Miss Diplomacy. All right.

Alex: Erin Zwiener is our champion. She is a conservationist who is trying to wind up growing or producing all of her own food. How's that going?

Erin!: It's going all right. I, uh, got a goat, couple months ago, and I've been learning how to milk a goat, and, uh, I would recommend, if you ever decide to go that way, get one that already knows how to be milked. It's less painful.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
David found the Daily Double on the 25th clue. Erin! was in the hole with -$1,800, Sophie had $2,200, and David was at $3,200. David wagered $1,300.

TAX-ONOMY $800: If you've owned property for more than a year & sell it for a profit, you'll owe the long-term type of this tax
(David: What is estate tax?)
...
(Alex: Less than a minute to go now, David.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
IT'S ALL GREEK LETTERS TO ME $800: This Greek letter seen here sure marks the spot
(Erin!: What is chi?)
[Alex clarified the pronunciation could be "zye" or "sye".]

(Erin!: What is Spain?)

COMPOSERS' COUNTRY OF BIRTH $1000: Heitor Villa-Lobos

BILLBOARD'S TOP MONEY MAKERS OF 2011 $1000: No. 9 with $13 million, he made the country charts his "Kinda Party"

BILLBOARD'S TOP MONEY MAKERS OF 2011 $800: We like "The Sweetest Taboo" too, but were still surprised to see this 1-named singer at No. 6
(Sophie: Who is Rihanna?)
(Erin!: Who is Adele?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Sophie: $4,200
David: $2,300
Erin!: -$1,800

Aaaannnddd . . . there goes Erin. Wonderful run, my friend! I'm glad I didn't have to play against you, chickadee; you're way too fast and too knowledgable. Even playing against you in the practice rounds was tough, and I was proud to have more or less a draw there.

I discovered that Erin is a boardie during lunch the first day of taping. When we returned to the studio, I mentioned to Maggie that Erin and I frequented this discussion board, and Maggie immediately called the legal team over to check on that and have us make notations on our legal forms. That's when I knew there was no way TPTB would ever let the two of us play each other unless absolutely necessary and as soon as Erin was defeated, I would be up. That eliminated some of the nerve-wracking anxiety of just sitting there waiting during the games, wondering when I'd be called. Not to mention I'd seen some REALLY good players fall to her and I didn't want to be another! I was so impressed that she battled back from so far down, even if she couldn't quite pull off the win today. Potters field, indeed! Not one of us contestants still waiting had any idea what the writers were going for there. I'm looking forward to seeing how the boardies did at home on this question that stumped all of us in the studio.

That was a tough one, Erin. Sad to see you go.

I've heard of potter's field, but that connection was never coming.

I would also think that America West Airlines in the top box was way undervalued. I got it mostly through their callsign of CACTUS.

I'm sure his dreamy way of going back to the Phoenix category while trailing with that DD pretty obviously waiting in the $1200 spot in Admirals really makes them swoon.

Could've gotten 5/5 in Flat, but NHO "caught flat footed" and wasn't sure if it was Flat Earth Organization, Society, or what.

Anyone notice that he flubbed a line in the O'Connor clue (Phoenix for $1600) but they left it in?

Soaps was a cakewalk. DOOL may be the easiest $2000 ever. On the flipside, B3 = niacin and Habitat 67 seemed waaaay undervalued.

Stalin kept me from the run in Puns. I couldn't get Lenin/Putin out of my head.

My knowledge of malls resulted in Camelback being my only get in Phoenix.

Potter's WHAT, now?!

Sophie didn't make the usual bet from first place.
Erin 3400-2000=1400
Sophie 8100-4000=2100
David 6300-2000=4300

Didn't matter anyway. SOphie would have had a lock if not for a $3K DD loss

For the second day in a row the think music was strongly abbreviated over here in Detroit. I'm hoping this is not permanent, it is really hard to play along when only given a couple of seconds to come up with a response in FJ.

I really thought that Erin was going to get that Rutter-esque 3rd round UToC style victory. If there was a FJ to do it on it would have been that one. Oh well.

I ran the composers' birth countries category and was surprised to see the contestants struggle with it. I am still not a fan of the "give the birth country" categories, though. This wasn't the best game to watch, but I didn't think that it was a great board.

I had no idea on FJ. That phrase doesn't ring a bell at all, but Bible is a weak spot for me.

Are they showing any sort of interstitial show? I know the last time someone complained about Detroit cutting the show to shreds, it was because they were doing some sort of live remote during commercial breaks.

Wow, that was a tough couple of boards, and a near-trashy final. I fancy myself a word origin buff and still had no clue.

Erin, was this toward the end of a taping day? It seemed like the tension and exhaustion at the end of the previous match hadn't quite worn off. You mounted a valiant comeback and I wondered if you were going to pull another rabbit out of your trivia hat. I hope I can be half as graceful under pressure if I ever make it on!

Yes, I got the Lach Trash on Jason Aldean. However, it's pronounced "AL-dean" (first syllable rhymes with "Pal"), not "ALL-dean".
