Didn't you guys tell me that Catch-22 got its name because 18 in Mila 18 was already taken? Funny, I actually decided to look up ducks on wikipedia today. Didn't help much, but I still got 4/5.

I guess the disappointing thing about Jeopardy is that the writers are still in control. They can make any category as simple or as hard as they want. I usually would perform well in an art category, but not today. Goodness, who else knew provenance? I stupidly thought of "copyright." I suppose if I were more intelligent, I would say, "chain of title." Do you think that would be acceptable?

I think maybe sometimes jeopardy puts some things into the top boxes that they don't think anyone would get, because they don't want to penalize with full force on a wrong guess. So, instead of the 400 space being easy, it's the hardest on the board. Perhaps they did that on the art terms category. Threw in a lot of TOMs that one might be able to pick up upon. Personally, I feel uncomfortable relying 100% on TOM.

Video game testing was my evening/night job during the taping and airing of my first six games, actually.

From there, I couldn't think of any other notable "number" books, so I just left it blank. (It also didn't help that I was completely unaware that there are two Ocean's Eleven films.)
There are actually four OCEAN'S movies: the 1960 original, the remake and its two sequels.

But does she command her own Air Force base like Dave Belotte did? No.

TenPoundHammer wrote:That's the problem with some Stupid Answers clues — if you don't know, there are often far too many potential guesses. Reservoir Park? Queen's Park? Basin Park? Grace Park? Formerly Park? Called Park? This Park?
And the possibility exists that somewhere in one of the two Koreas there's a Park Park.

$600-DD, what Booth said after he shot him
$800-Sec of War's name (Note-Sec of State Seward (guy who bought Alaska) was stabbed himself that night)
$1,000-what Stanton said when Lincoln died

Nonne of those things ring a bell?
How 'bout a superclue about who was in the presidential box with Lincoln (besides Mrs Lincoln and Booth, of course):
Spoiler
Army Maj. Henry Rathbone
.

But I was rather perplexed by the clue that dealt with the dispute as to where Booth uttered his infamous cry, the box or stage floor. It quoted Booth, but he was a fugitive after shooting Lincoln, and was not captured alive. So, to whom did he pass on this statement?

Nowhere. You just wrote "thus always the tyrant" in Latin. Might as well say "people called Romans, they go to houses". It's "sic semper tyrranis". Last word is dative plural. Thus always to tyrants.
You're right, it does end in the letters "is," not "us," but you're tripping on your ancient Roman shoelaces: the word still has two "n"s and only one "r" (the English "tyranny" coming directly from the Latin) -- tyrannis, not "tyrranus."

"Catch-18" was one of the "Famous Titles" from my TD, which you entered, so perhaps that's it. I would have guessed that that Catch 22 would have pre-dated Ocean's 11, but that did seem to be where the clue was pointing. (I figured that if it wasn't the response, Catch-22 would have been massive neg bait)
Thanks TF, I knew it was from some game in these parts. If one pays attention, one can learn a lot here.

The Lincoln category was simple if you could wade through Alex's Oprahesque description. I knew what they were going for right away but almost forgot it waitng for him to finish. I missed the gun clue, thought that was a bit undervalued.
Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you on this one. It asked you for some pretty fine details about the Lincoln assassination. It also left out a lot of other interesting players, like Seward, Mudd,Surratt, and others.

Perhaps more importantly, this is probably an example of jeopardy making the question much longer than it ought to be. I don't think the players are leaving points on the board because they are ignorant, but because the questions are longer. The longer questions favor less knowledgable players, giving them extra time to ponder the clue, and preventing the players from finishing the game. Why would the viewer want to see less able players win, and why would a player want to feel worse about his performance, thinking that he was given an artificial advantage?

I thought Andrew Jackson was a huge negbait on Memphis. He is buried in Nashville so people would associate him with that city.

I wouldn't normally mention it, but can't resist doing so here: his last name is actually Belote.

I got to meet him and tour said Air Force base with him before he moved back to Virginia.

I was really surprised that they gave Stanton's name in the clue after they asked about him. Granted, they didn't give his title, but the name might be enough to jog someone's memory.

I went straight from Ocean's Eleven to Catch-22. Done.
Don't ask me how, but I somehow pulled Stanton out of my ... er, hat, and I was similarly surprised to hear him mentioned in the $1000 clue. Don't they know some people start at the bottom and work their way up?

I did the same, econgator, but it took me nearly the whole 30 seconds because Ocean's Twelve also entered my mind and clouded things up for a few seconds.

Oh, and of course, congratulations to Stephanie on another dominating win.

Congratulations once again, Stephanie. This is getting kind of repetitive, however.

We saw 1776 at Ford's Theatre this summer. Very well done, and the renovation makes it a comfortable theater to see a show in.

I can't remember which clue it was (until it comes up on the Archive), but I will be introducing my Shout At of the Day, i.e., the clue that had me shouting at the TV the most.

real quick without thinking about it too much: Derringer. I just consider that such an iconic image, and not only for Booth.
Amazed it was not only a TS, but also a double miss. (What's worse? Stand and stare, or "NHNF," as Alex calls them, though they rarely are that?)

I really ate up the category, to the point that I predicted that the DD would be Booth's famous words.

I believe the clue also mentioned that the gun came from Philly - Colt was a Hartford, CT man.

You're exactly right; it was the Derringer.

I’m a math head, and what Joon said on the previous page makes a ton of sense. FJ! is a crapshoot. If the guy in second place has $8,000 going in, it makes a huge difference if first place has $17,000 or $15,000. Ms. Jass is so strong that about the only thing that is going to keep her from a lock is taking small bets, while the opposition bets very high on a DD just to get in striking range. It won’t surprise me if that is how she ends up losing in the end. Short of running into another buzzsaw that is about as good as her, which I think is unlikely. I do not picture her losing because she went into final jeopardy in 2nd or 3rd place.

You mention she’s had two games that were not locks, they aren’t in the Jarchive yet, but I think Thursday would have been if she were just a little more aggressive on the betting. Now, Friday she wasn't as strong, but that one time out of six, and she still had the lead. Maybe in the TOC when its really not dollars, but it’s basically points she’ll push it harder. I’m not saying she has to go Roger Craig on people, but betting 30% or 40% of her total when she has 10 grand and the others have 2 or 3 makes a lot of sense, unles she just hates the catagory. It puts people away if you get it right, and still leaves her in control of the game if she gets it wrong.

The $800 wager on the first daily double was way too low.

Can anyone tell me how the clue about duck with the answer of the Pekin breed was phrased? Missed last night's show and heard about it on Facebook. Thanks!

I was mulling it over, could he have boasted about it to Mudd? So we'd get it hearsay.

Or, especially since it's in the top box, just quote the clue back...Green Park. I doubt they really expected many players to have heard of it. And similarly, there's no more Pavlovian Chinese dish than Peking Duck, and the clue told you to drop the "g..."
Huh. I honestly can't say I've seen anything duck at our local Chinese restaurant, or any of the 40 billion others I've been to. I would've thought the most Pavlovian Chinese dish would be something like chow mein, egg foo yung, egg rolls, etc. I would've even thought of General Tso's Chicken before ever getting to the duck stuff.
No, you can't get it at every Chinese restaurant, but when spotted "duck" it's the dish that'll come to mind for most people.

There's nothing meaningful there; I just like embellished tops/sweaters, and that's what Target is selling these days ;)

Thanks for the kind words, folks. I was feeling rejuvenated on Monday, and the boards had lots of categories that I liked today. I was pretty excited about Sic Semper Tyrannus -- I've had that nugget sitting there in my brain and it just popped forward at the right time. (My dad, a serious Lincoln scholar, knew all the rest!)

By the time this episode taped, my husband had found out about the women's record, so I was gunning for that going forward.
First of all' congratulations on being a dynamic and dominating champion. I am looking forward to cheering you on in the TOC.

I would never have correctly answered the Sic semper tyranis question except for the fact that I learned it while watching an episode of J about 20 years ago. A female contestant was asked something like,"This Viginia state motto was shouted by John Wilkes Booth, after he shot President Lincoln." She incorrectly answered. "What is death to all tyrants."+

Her name was Clara (Harris). I know that because Thomas Mallon wrote a very good novel Henry and Clara recounting and in some ways imagining their lives after that night. Things did not turn out well for them either.
Booth kept a diary that was found in the barn after his death-

I shouted Sic semper before I fired.

Deringer, actually.

Although it's misspelled nowadays with 2 r's, Booth used a Philadelphia Deringer to shoot Lincoln.

And yeah, I'm with you guys that it was a stunning TS.
