Game Recap for Show #6863, 2014-06-18
CONTESTANTS
Desirée Zicko, a marketing manager from Reading, Massachusetts
Troy Senik, a newspaper columnist from Westlake Village, California
Paige Ormiston, a Navy JAG from Norfolk, Virginia (whose 1-day cash winnings total $32,200)
OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Ladies and gentlemen. Paige got kind of lucky on yesterday's program because the JAG officer had to deal with a category all about the law, and she did well in that. However, she did very well in all the other categories, too. So that's a little bit of a warning to our two challengers today --Desirée and Troy. But good luck to all three of you. Pick up those signaling devices. Here come the categories for the first round of play, the Jeopardy! Round. They are...

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Planning for a successful wedding can sometimes be tricky. Desirée Zicko knows all about that. Tell us what happened.
Desirée: Yes, well, on my wedding's save-the-date card, I, um, I had a little mistake. I was off by one digit on the phone number for the hotel where we had rooms booked. And instead of going to the hotel, I sent all my guests to a --kind of a sexy chat line.
[Laughter]
Alex: And did they all thank you for that? Or complain?
Desirée: They all turned up at the wedding.
Alex: Okay.
Desirée: Yeah.
Alex: Good for you.
Alex: All right, Troy Senik is a newspaper columnist from Westlake Village here in Southern California. Now let's talk about another wedding --your girlfriend's parents' wedding. There was a connection there between them and our show.
Troy: And Jeopardy!, and Jeopardy!, yes. They're big fans of Jeopardy!; watch it all the time. It was part of their sort of regular routine. So when they got married, when the preacher asked, "Do you take this woman to be your wife?" the "Think" music from Final Jeopardy! started playing.
[Laughter]
Troy: ...which the audience found very funny, except for the bride didn't know it was going to be played.
Alex: Uh-oh.
Troy: Yes. She laughed it off. The groom did show up with a black eye a week later for reasons that we assume were independent.
Alex: [laughs] Okay, I never realized that our Jeopardy! "Think" music could have that kind of an impact on people.
Alex: Paige Ormiston, Navy JAG, is our champion. And what's this about a friend called to tell you about your ex-boyfriend being a contestant on our show?
Paige: This was about 12 or 13 years ago when I was in law school. I got a phone call one evening, just this really excited voice. And I knew immediately it was one of my good friends from college saying, "Oh, my god. You gotta turn on Jeopardy!. So and so's on." Then it was my ex and of course my next line was, "You're in California. I'm in Buffalo. It's already been over for two hours." So he provided a play-by-play for the next 10 minutes through Double Jeopardy! and Final Jeopardy! to let me know what happened. And then we may have tuned in to watch the next night. It was one of the funniest phone calls I've ever received.
Alex: I'm sure.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Desirée found the Daily Double on the 24th clue. Paige had $1,400, Troy had $5,800, and Desirée was at $1,800. Desirée wagered $800.
THE GREEK GOD OR GODDESS OF... $800: Fertility, roads, thieves & absolutely, positively getting packages there overnight
(Desirée: Uh, $800, please.)
(Alex: All right, with less than a minute to go...)
...
(Alex: Desirée?)
(Desirée: [no response])
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
PANDA-MONIUM $800: The red panda's funny walk is usually described as this 6-letter gait, due to its front legs being angled inward
(Desirée: What is bowlegged?)
PANDA-MONIUM $1000: The first live giant panda to come to the west was Su-Lin, who in 1936 came to live at the Brookfield Zoo in this U.S. city
THE GREEK GOD OR GODDESS OF... $400: War; his followers included Famine, Pain & Panic
(Paige: Who is Mars?)

An easy Spanish category down the drain because of slow play. Actually, that entire J! round seemed kinda easy. I even ran the music category, which almost never happens.Bamaman wrote:Will Desiree pick a clue finally?
I knew someone would slip up and name a Roman god(dess), but my precall was another Bacchus/Dionysus screwup.
Instaget FJ.

Nice strong game by Troy. Paige seemed like a different player today after yesterday's win; she had a lot of negs.

A fun board. Seemed a little easy. I was able to run four categories (UN, Greek Gods, History on the Move, Pulitzer Prize Plays), which I'm almost never able to do, so I was satisfied. Missed FJ though. I just didn't know it, and the answer didn't ring a bell.

I'll never understand why people find it so hard to pronounce Bangor correctly, especially since it's sounds like it's spelled (NOT "banger").

Re: Wednesday, June 18, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Was Troy foolish to try to ring in on those last two clues that Paige picked up? Granted, they were fairly easy clues, but even if his confidence level was high, he risked losing the lock:
$24,700 - $1200 (Crusoe) - $1600 (Easter Island) = $21,900
$7,400 + $1200 (Crusoe) + $1600 (Easter Island) + $2,000 (Tonga) + $2,000 (O'Neill) = $14,200(!)
Right wager on the Daily Double, risky follow-up.

No luck on fj. Surprised at contestant performance on Greek and playwright categories.

Right wager on the Daily Double, risky follow-up.
Crusoe...could have been a vicious neg bait. I doubt anyone knows the name of the guy they had in clue.

Having just posted about my frustrations regarding uncovered clues in the "Show improvement poll" thread, I was, needless to say, quite irritated by Desiree tonight.

Brookfield Zoo was easy. Paige must have never been to Great Lakes Naval Base.

Anybody else say "Seal Team Six" because that's what they thought they wanted? Were they going for the just Seals?
I guess just "Marine Band" would have been acceptable. Like a true Navy person, Paige went out of her way to avoid giving the Marines a shout out.
Hey, a dude won. We haven't had a two time dude champ since Arthur Chu. Can Troy laugh in the face of the rift change tomorrow?

I did - nothing in the clue seemed to suggest that they only wanted "seals".Bamaman wrote:Anybody else say "Seal Team Six" because that's what they thought they wanted? Were they going for the just Seals?

I wasn't sure about the official name for FJ, so I said "The President's Own marching band." I'm not sure if the addition of "marching" would have blown the whole thing for me.

This was another board that I found to be schizophrenic. There were some great clues sprinkled in with quite a few that were vague or not appropriately valued.
The "Movie Themes" category was a surprisingly easy 5/5.
I was worried that the show would end with two wheelhouse categories that had clues left uncovered. I knew the Heidi Chronicles DD, probably because of the Frank Spangenberg story. I also knew the $2000 "Eugene O'Neill" clue, but I had no idea on Rent or the clue that wanted the month.
FJ was an instant get, though I wasn't super confident on it.

Seriously? As soon as I saw "Alexander Selkirk," I knew the correct response. I could've gone the other way and given that name if they asked for Crusoe's real-life inspiration. It's just one of those things that a lot of trivia buffs know.doihavetoreally wrote:Crusoe...could have been a vicious neg bait. I doubt anyone knows the name of the guy they had in clue.
